Hello All!

We have another dream sequence and therefore more trouble! The monsters in this one gave me nightmares!!! DO NOT LIKE!!! Utterly terrifying. In other news Willow is a badass witch and needs to believe in herself more! Please and thank you. We have a potential super duo with her & Tara PLUS Riley & Buffy question mark. Although seems kinda awkward there...we shall see! Tara intrigues me, is she gonna be a good wicca or a naughty wicca??? I'm scared!! Bring on the next one!

Have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support!

Much love

Dakara x

Watching someone get to this episode for the first time is like being a kid on Christmas morning. Such a great piece of art. Merry Hush Everyone

John Bieleny

One of my Favourite episodes of Buffy, was waiting for your reaction to this one.

Purple Nurple

Congratulations for surviving the scariest episode of Buffy (at least so far - not saying if anything else is scarier in the future or not) This episode of Buffy got Emmy nominate for writing and cinematography. In terms of Tara - I loved her in this episode and because of this episode I used to part my hair in a zig zag pattern when I was younger haha. (Wasn't as good as hers). I'm not sure if you recognise Tara (Amber Benson) - she appeared in 2 episodes of Supernatural. The good vampire from season 2 and then again in season 6.

I don't think you missed a single one of the double entendres I spotted. Keep it up! (Though I think you missed that Buffy was complaining that Giles had made her hips too wide in his sketch.) Yes, a great episode. A veritable tour de force of writing (for which it was nominated for an Emmy) and design. But somehow, not one of my favourites. Possibly because I didn't buy the apparent trauma caused by people having lost their voice for a couple of hours? I always thought Buffy and Riley's silence at the end was hopeful. As she explained earlier, they couldn't communicate because they'd both start babbling. They did better when mute.

AlyAdmirer

No. No, these are MUCH larger than the normal American dorm room. :-) Basically, as I recall, the genesis of this episode was Joss getting annoyed about people chalking up the success of BUFFY to witty dialogue, and so said, "I'll show you!" The script did earn an Emmy nomination, back in the days when genre shows did NOT get much love from the awards circuit.

Toasty Overlord

If I remember correctly, the British soap was Brookside. (Don't actually watch soaps just remember the "furore" around it.

Ed Green

Possibly also the scene where Xander thinks Giles is miming breasts rather than hearts?

Christopher simeon

What is Buffy without dialogue? It can't possibly be a good episode right? Wrong. One of my favorite Buffy episodes ever. You are correct. Dreams are very important in Buffy and it is best to rewatch any dream sequences in the season after you finish that particular season as they love to sprinkle in foreshadowing or themes to the larger narrative. Both Giles and Xander are struggling to find where they fit in this season outside the normal dynamics. Giles is trying to move on since he is not a watcher but this life with Buffy and the group fighting supernatural has cost him that chance.

top tier buffy episode

Bart Aansorgh

I absolutely freaking love this episode. Its one of my all time favourite Buffy episodes. I was waitin for this one ;). The no-dialogue is done soo wel. Also all music in this episode is either instrumental or has chorus in it as vocals, but nothing spoken. I absolutely love the childrens rhyme in the beginning, its the perfect amount of creepy and im all for it. I love that stuff. The Gentlemen are perfectly creepy too. The way they float, making no sound themselves. Did you notice btw, that they really behave like "gentlemen" to each other. They open doors for eachother. One opens his bag and takes out the scalpel, offers it to the other who is like, no no, you do it. I love those small touches here. Xander/Anya are hilarious as always, and spike is perfect comedic relief. All the buffy/riley stuff explodes in this episode and now its left to see what happens. Willow and Tara definitely had a moment, and who knows what would happen. Regarding Oz suddendly being a werewolf, atleast you already know Tara is a witch. The problem with Willow ships for me is that Willow is just ammazing, so I want her to have the world. So any person that seems to match well with her in a relationship im all for, cause Willow deserves it.

John

In your attempt to avoid spoilers, you are offering spoilers.

Bart Aansorgh

i dont necessarily agree. stating not to deny or confirm something i would not say is a spoiler. the other things are throwbacks to episodes already watched.

Bart Aansorgh

but please dm me which parts of my comment where potential spoilers in your opinion, so i might edit it

Nicholas Corgan

I don't see an option to DM you, but the beginning of your last paragraph says it all. "Hint hint" stuff is pretty transparent.

Nicholas Corgan

Agreeing with Darryl, this is certainly not representative of the dorm rooms I've seen. The only comparable one I've seen was super expensive and meant for three people.

Kirsten (Heavenli24)

I've lived in student accommodation in both the UK and US and the dorms shown on US TV are generally much nicer than they actually are in actual US colleges. My US dorm room was a double and it was definitely much bigger than my UK double room, but not as big or as nice as Buffy and Willow's. It had plain white walls, no carpet, 2 single beds, 2 small closets, a sink and mirror, and a UK-size fridge with a small freezer above it. After the first semester they converted some of the double rooms into super-size singles, so I got to have the room all to myself :). Living in the US dorms was a big change from the UK though - my US university was a dry campus, so no alcohol was allowed, even if you were over 21, and we were basically treated like children. The dorm floors were single-sex, and they even had colouring competitions where you could win a boys-only or girls-only pizza party (what were we, 10?)! I was 20 at the time and had already done 2 years of UK uni, where first year was all about drinking, having crazy floor parties and going clubbing in town, so it was a bit of an adjustment :P .

Bart Aansorgh

Allright. i dont thinknits a spoiler myself but then again i know all episodes so it can be hard to differentiate. ive removed that segment to be safe.

Steve Quast

Xander said "Shut up!" three times and then everyone did.

Purple Nurple

I couldn't even imagine going to uni in the USA. Would have been a hell of a different experience! My first year of uni was basically a big 'p*ss up' lol. We also had girl and boy only floors in our dorms, but to get to the next floor you had to walk through the other floors. It just meant the girls didn't have to clean up the guy's mess in the kitchen (or toilets)

Jon Freezin-Rain

Well,, I only had the 1 dorm room and only for 1 year before setting up in a small house with several other students but the dorm. 2 beds attached bathroom, sink, stove and fridge, Sounds like I had a novel experience, AND Your introduction to Camden Toy as "The Monster" (it's not a spoiler it's in the credits)

Gau Thier

Clearly one of the most daring, and of the best, Buffy episodes, if not TV episodes in history. This episode is nothing short of perfect, when it could have gone stale a thousand times. The whole scene with Giles doing his presentation of the Gentlemen is a moment to remember. Why use words when you can convey so much expressions in a look? Softness, with Willow and Giles, WTF? between Buffy and Riley when they finally meet crossbow to electric gun, fear at the very beginning, contempt (the expression in Spike's eyes after Xander tries to phone call his friends), pure disgust (in everyone's eyes after Anya's... invitation to the dance) ... Also adding, the quality of the soundtrack. When there's no words, music is all that's left, and God it's so awesome! Ah, and the Gentlemen... Among the scariest, creepiest monster in all Buffyverse (the only rival to me being the "Boogeyman" in season 2) but I love them, I find their mannerisms completely hilarious. Great review as always, you're quite insightful! I'm not gonna elaborate cos spoilers and all, but at times I find myself saying "OK... that's completely what's gonna happen." Keep it up, can't wait to see what's to come!

“Hush” is renown to be an iconic episode in TV history. Personally I've been always impress how well it convey the idea that sometime (not always but sometime) you can communicate certain things better when you don't have to relay on a strictly structured language. I honestly don't know who come out with the original idea, but I would like to pay him, or her, my compliments for the brilliant “lore” behind the design of the gentlemen. Visually, the style of their suits, the restrain jackets' old design for the henchmen, recalls directly British high class society at the end of 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century and all the other elements fit perfectly with such image. They have henchmen because the gentlemen of the period regarded any kind of physical activity or labor as beneath them, something for the “little people”. Another gentlemen's trait was to be “soft spoken”. They were able to say the most vile things but always without raising their voice, a thing considered rude. Clearly the all “silence” thing fits perfectly with this idea. At the end, the way to kill them, again perfectly on theme, the scream of a princess. The idea that a “princess” … a woman dared to make her voice heard was enough to make their heads explode. Talking about good writing ... Tara – do I have to say more? She is shy, lovely, sweet, kind, sunny, but at the same time she's also resourceful, proactive, brave, caring and protective, and you can get all of these just from this single episode without the need to have someone explaining it to you. Another great example of “show don't tell”. About Tara I would like to point out a little detail … the zigzag part. She looks great on her, I would like to know why so few use it … well, actually I know why. It's not for everyone and it's a pain to do it and maintain it, but still... An honest question for anyone who wishes to give me his opinion. Olivia. Hers is basically a non character. We have seen her in two episodes and still we know absolutely nothing about her other than occasionally she and Giles have sex. Are they old friends, are they in some kind of romantic relationship, are they each other's booty call? I have no clue. They drop her in the story giving her probably twelve lines, mostly generic, and barely any agency in the story. My question is: why? Why introducing her character and why doing it in this way?

Carl

It's very clear you're enjoying the series! The expression on your face, especially during more emotional scenes, is of total immersion and engagement.

Sally Rush

I love this so much I am going to watch it again! I really do love how much you have fallen in love with the show and the characters. It's a joy to share your Buffy experience with you

Ian

Really fun episode 🙂 pretty sure none of the cast struggled with remembering their lines in this one 😃 seems the boys writers got inspiration from this episode pop pop 🙂 . The soup was indeed brookside with the fantastic Anna friel 😍 how great was she in pushing daisies btw . Enjoyed this reaction a lot cheers as always dak

Collinson

With Xander I think he’s just insecure about expressing his feelings. If you notice any time he has a emotional speech like the first episode of this season where he tells Buffy she’s his hero he always has to follow it up with a joke to try and cover his emotions.

Dave Ford

"there were sparks there right?" between Tara and Willow? I see where you're coming from, but remember this is a show that aired a quarter of a century ago - network TV - especially network TV in the USA - was a very different place to where it is now.

Robin Gibbons

My "Buffy will patrol tonight" shirts is one of my most prized possessions!

Robin Gibbons

Also this episode made quite a few top 100 tv episodes of all time lists. My 3rd favorite of the series!

G.Un.

I don't know why, but I never realized before how the perception of certain things in this episode have changed over time. When the anchorman on the news starts talking about quarantine and what that means, I can quite imagine the audience today thinking “Got it, they are in lockdown … we know what it means”.

Saga

One of my favorites this one, and absolutely loved your reaction!<3

John

I started school in 96 and my dorm was coed and all single rooms, so my floor had around 20 guys and girls. The drinking age is 19 here (Toronto) so all of us were just turning legal that year and my goodness, it was quite the party. Probably more common now, but the bathrooms were coed as well. That was weird at first, but becomes normal soon enough.

Darrell Palmer

I'm loving the reactions and your insights. Buffy dreams are always important and are always worth careful examination.

Julian Welton

Such a great episode! It was nominated for but didn't end up winning an Emmy. There's an episode next season that is not just an excellent Buffy episode but easily one of the best episodes of a series I've ever seen, and it absolutely should've won as well but it didn't even get nominated.

Claire Eyles

You've just seen the first of my top two episodes in the entirety of Buffy. You may also recognise one of the lead Gentleman from such movies as Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy, The Silver Surfer, Hocus Pocus and the Shape of Water. It's the absolute legend that is Doug Jones. :D

Michele

This is a scary one. Those creepy floating guys reminded me of the Reaper we saw in season 1 of SPN episode Faith. The dorm rooms I have seen in the US are not nearly that nice, or that big. They are much smaller.

Jim Greer

One of the greatest episodes of tv of all time .

Phil

There are so many moments and episodes I can't wait to see your reaction to, won't say what they are or when they happen for obvious reasons, but, still can't wait.

DakaraJayne

I’m excited that you’re excited! 😄 thanks for watching Phil

DakaraJayne

So glad you’re enjoying Darrell. Thanks for watching

Im relieved to hear that! Im unbelievably invested and I just can’t wait to uncover more!

Joseph Johnson

I love this episode. It is in my type 5 favorite episodes for the series. I could be wrong but if I remember correctly, Joss was told something like his shows wouldn't be as good without his snappy dialog so they wrote this episode to show everyone how good the cast and show could be without a voice. Everyone did an amazing a job on this episode. Happiest of all, we have the most wonderful person of the series joining the cast, Amber Benson. She is such a kind and sweet soul. It is nice we have a fellow witch for Willow to learn and grow with. I miss Oz as well but he always tried to supress his power and keep it locked away. Willow has a friend who accepts her gift of magic and now has a second who will encourage her to master it. As for the LBGTQ you mentioned with the looks from Tara, this was the 90s and Hollywood had a saying, Never get caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy. Representation was non existent for both shows and actors.

Nicholas Corgan

It's a sad truth. I look back at the Buffy+Faith teases, and these days, an explicit attraction could have added even more emotion/tension to Buffy and Faith each doing what they felt had to be done. Oh well, that was amazing as it was.

Jack

I'm coming to this late, but the advantage of that is I can comment without worrying so much about spoilers - you caught the Tara/Willow cues SO much sooner that other reactors! Kudos.
