Hello All!

Spike can fight demons! Possibly a game changer there at least for the short term? IDK. The Xander/Spike scenes were interesting. It went from comedy to heavy real quick there too. They all helped Spike in the end. I hated seeing Willow's confidence get shot too, she needs lifting up not holding down! Riley & Buffy working together again but on rocky ground, I'm not sure if I like the pairing or not - is there chemistry there? All I know is that I want Buffy to be happy & Riley appears to be a nice guy.

Have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support!

Much love

Dakara x

If comparing the characters to breakfast cereals, then Riley would be porridge. That is all.

Picture it: Sicily... errrr, I mean, Virginia. January 19th, 2000. Just after 1AM. Watching this episode on tape delay, since where I lived didn't have a WB affiliate so the Fox affiliate carried their shows in the middle of the night. Percy: "I like my women hot." Me: "... IN WHAT ALTERNATE UNIVERSE IS WILLOW ROSENBERG *NOT* HOT?!?!?!?!?!" 22 and a half years later, I'm STILL ready to fight a bitch. :-)

Spike do be toxic af. Toxic, with irresistible charisma. And Dakara, you're in deep lol. Love it.

Parker? Let it go, girl! 🙂 Pleasant surprise, this reaction. I was expecting an Angel, which is good in itself, but I'd been looking forward to this Buffy as it's always a delight watching you be delighted and I knew you'd be delighted with Spike! Though otherwise this was basically a 'deal with loose ends and set some stuff up for the future' ep. Buffy's birthday was stated in Surprise (2x13) to be 19 January, consistent with her being Capricorn on the cusp of Aquarius. We just had Halloween, so her birthday's not far off. Did you notice than when the Scoobies were walking through the school, the trophy that Amy's mom is trapped in was on the floor (near the mayor-meat)? And we also had yet another appearance of rat-Amy.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

The season 1 nostalgia episode. Percy shows up, earthquakes, Hellmouths, a trip back to the highschool, the Scoobies being worried about just being sidekicks, Spike pining for the good ol' days of killing and mayhem. I'm sure I missed something but you get the idea.🙂

Merkavar

ah i was expecting angel. is this for the viewing order?

Shaun Houghton

Percy was just saying stuff to keep his orgasm friend happy, he didn't mean it.

DakaraJayne

Yes. I have post with my view order on :)

I think I mentioned in an earlier episode that Spike is tremendously insightful with regard to human emotions, to a surprising degree for a vampire - back when Willow was still hurting over Oz's departure. Here we see him using that insight for evil when he lashes out at Xander and Willow. He knows exactly what their insecurities are and homes straight in on them. And yet, he does it with such charisma...

John

Hey...C'mon now.... he's smart...he's handsome....he's.....um....nice to Buffy's friends and um...... good sprinkled with cinnamon and a handful of raisins and holy crap, he IS porridge.

John

I believe so.... following the original TV airdate order. If you go back and forth between the two shows this order allows for shows to sync up better -- ie: the gem of Amara is in Sunnydale one episode and then Oz takes it to Angel in LA in the next.

John

Thanks for sharing your reaction. This is one of those episodes that is OK but I dont' usually revisit it unless I'm doing a full-series binge, so it was nice to watch it again. I did very much enjoy it, and your comments about Spike keep making me smile. He truly is a complex character to have, given his past, and I dunno... I keep thinking this relationship he has with the Scoobies right now shouldn't work, but it very much does! His sheer joy at the discovery he can hurt demons was brilliant.

John

I've been referring to people as "orgasm friends" for twenty years now thanks to Anya and it never stops making me chuckle.

First of all a little clarification. When Buffy said that slayers don't live past 25, she didn't quote some fixed rule, hers was more a statistical observation. In general, the life expectancy of slayers is quite low. Facing life or death fights every day, it's just a matter of time before you lose, and when you lose you die. Many slayers, probably, didn't even survive as long as Buffy did. Remember Kendra? She has been a slayer for berly a year before being killed by Dru. Faith didn't last much longer before ending up in a coma. Spike. Definitely an episode that helps a lot to define Spike as a character. You can find many crumbs scattered in different episodes in the last two years but, because he wasn't a regular and because originally it wasn't even planned to keep him around for so long, many first time viewers remained baffled by many Spike's actions and decision. Like answering Dak's question in 4x03, “Why the first thing Spike does with the gem of Amara is facing Buffy?”, answer, because that is what he is. He thrives in the fight, the danger, the excitement, the adrenaline rush, the action of the combat is what he seeks, it's what drives him at the end. He's a fighter, constantly looking for the best, the most dangerous opponent possible, and there isn't better opponent than the slayers. Apart from this, this episode remembered us again Spike's talent to understand people. Dak said “Spike knows nothing”, but if anyone knows it's Spike. After all, if you want to defeat your opponent, you have to understand him. Spike is definitely quite unique as vampire … sometimes I like to see him as the slayer from the “dark side”. Finally, about Buffy and Riley, I would like to remove the idea that the fact that both have, apparently, the same goal, to some extent, is an element for or against their relationship. You don't have to be in a relationship to work together as “partners”, like you don't have to work together to be in a relationship. For what it worth, Willow, Xander and Giles are fighting evil with Buffy for the last three years without the need of any kind of romantic relationship, aside a brief disturbing, confusing and regrettable period in season 3. Clarified this, I get that Riley is really into Buffy, who wouldn't be, and is really emotional, I get wanting to make clear what he feels for her, great. I get expressing his desire to carry on the relationship, fine. But, personally, I think that at a certain point he slips in mansplaining territory, mainly because, as Buffy tried to explain to him, he knows nothing about her, her past and what it means to be a slayer and how it's different from what he does, for him it's a job but for her, remembering Kendra, it's what she is, but, apparently, he doesn't want or can understand. Could this coming back one day and bite him in the backside? We will see. Actually, considering all we know, all the challenges, the pain, the sacrifices, the fights, the choices and the losses Buffy had to go through in the last years, Riley knows so little of what he's talking about that his mansplaining reach a level near the top level of mansplaining like when a man try to explaining to a woman what she is going through while in labor. Another thing that annoys me a bit with this Buffy & Riley thing is how Buffy goes from “No, absolutely no to this relationship!” for the most part of the episode, to “Yes, I'm all in, let's do it!” in the time of a scene transition. I would have preferred to see her opening to the idea at the end of the episode and than, maybe, having a resolution at the end of the next one, but it is what it is. One thing that I have to admit, I've never been a Riley fan, not so much because of the character but for the actor who plays him, Marc Blucas. Let me be clear, I've nothing against him, for what I know he could be a wonderful person in RL, but on screen... First, I believe that the range of emotion he can convincingly portray is quite limited, especially when paired with someone like SMG or Alyson Hannigan. Sometimes I look at him and don't understand if he's shocked, angry or … constipated. Second, I find the chemistry between him and SMG, most of the times is ... OK, and OK is not enough for me to ship them, to be emotionally invested in this relationship. Nothing against but also not something I feel to root for. Now, I realize that on screen chemistry is quite subjective, so if you see them as the on screen couple of the century, great! It's just not for me.

Still better for you than Count Chocula

Spike is once again comedic gold. Riley and Buffy got it out in the open and i get what you're saying. A lot of what Riley says makes sense, but at the same time, when you consider what buffy went through before..... Also, i agree. In what universe is Willow not hot?! The rest now also knows that Riley is into paintball, well except for giles. It's not that slayers don't live over 25, but just with how dangerous their life is, its statistics. I mean Faith is pretty much donzo, Kendra already dead. I want to say more but its 2 AM and my brain aint working no more, so i'll save it for the next one.

We never really get into what the Gentlemen were doing or what they wanted the hearts for. Seeing as this episode takes place seemingly the next day, wouldn't it be crazy if the Gentlemen were looking to avert the Hellmouth opening?

Shaun Houghton

I don't particularly like Riley either, but he does not come close to mansplaining.

The BLOOB

This episode is kinda weird, in the not so great way imo. It was written by 3 different writers, who each had a story thread, and you can really feel it. I hate the Buffy/Riley stuff. I love the Xander/Spike/Willow stuff. Then at least 2 of Giles scenes are ADR for some reason, which makes him sound different every time you hear him. He just feels awkward. I really didn't think any of the callbacks worked particularly well either... going back to the High School should be an epic return. We spent 3 years there... but you kinda forget you're even there by the end of the fight scene. Percy was... fine I guess. ... and the ending didn't feel earned to me. Did anything really happen that would change Buffy's mind? It was "doomed", then they fought demons, and it was ok? Spike saves this episode. His fake accent, his shirt, his Christmas Puppy speech, his trolling... if not for him, this would be a bottom tier episode IMO, but because he is here... not so bad.

Christopher simeon

It was Buffy return to high school and Riley stressing over nothing at the end that made her realize she was doing the same things and holding onto baggage from high school and her relationship with angel.

Ian
