Hello All!

This felt very series finale to me, the production was high, the stakes were high & we had a lot of loose ends tied up. Great episode. Adam wasn't my fav villain to say the least but he did tie some storylines together. Made me happy to see the group back together and taking him down as one!

The next ep is WILD. I took G. Un's advice & watched the episode, then watched again while taking notes to create a video of me sharing my ideas/predictions/thoughts on the S4 finale! I will be uploading both together next week & I hope you enjoy them :)

Look forward to reading your comments as always, have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support!

Much love

Dakara x

Adam’s dialogue was brilliant throughout the season. I’ve already commented previously, but since Adam is pretty much history, I’ll repeat myself a little and just add that I grew up watching 50s (and earlier) horror movies on tv, so I don’t exactly have a problem watching scary Tony Robbins looking creatures being monsters. And no matter how much money they throw at special effects and CGI these days, I still have to suspend a lot of disbelief to “believe” them. I’ll say it again, if Adam had been human-looking it just wouldn’t have worked. We needed the visual to remind us throughout the season that, oh yeah, this is a hybrid trinity. The Scooby-Buffy hybrid was more than cool, it’s a harbinger of much great stuff to come, but, of course, you had no way of knowing what’s coming at this point. Or: “You think you know. What's to come, what you are… You haven't even begun.” I can’t wait to get stuck in the next reaction (which is really the beginning of the rest of the series) and see how its weirdness effects you. And then onto season five. If you already love the show as much as you do now, my expectations are maybe too high for how you’ll see the rest of it, the seasons that, in my opinion, set Buffy off from every other show in television.

I can’t wait to watch this, but I’m even more excited about the finale and wrap-up next week. 😀🥳

Translation of the Sumerian that Buffy speaks during the enjoining spell (according to shooting scripts & Buffy magazine): We are heart. We are Mind. We are Spirit. From the raging storm we bring the power of the Primeval One. Boil the air.

I wouldn't be saying this if you hadn't said you saw the finale of season 4 already, but I think the best way to look at it is, this is the season finale, while the next one is an epilogue. I'm also saying this without having seen the next episode reaction, and having no idea of you've already picked up on that.

Ed Green

'You can never hope to grasp the source of our power' - Chills just thinking about that line. Looking forward to more when watching you watch it later this afternoon

Nicholas Corgan

I didn’t know she’d seen that. That’s a very interesting set of knowledge to come in with, with context filled in along the way.

Neil Silverman

As you said, this really was the finale to the entire S4 storyline. The next episode serves more as "an epilogue" as Raven Dark put it, or a bridge between what's happened and future seasons. Still, I can't wait to see your reaction to it. And I agree that Adam was a huge disappointment. I think the overall Buffy fandom has a pretty low opinion of S4, and I think by and large that's entirely because Adam ended up being such a lame villain. Because there are a lot of GREAT episodes in season 4, and the emotional core of the season is very strong. But we lost Maggie (a truly interesting character) and replaced her with Adam (a total dud), and it just brought the whole season down. Anyway, loving your reactions, looking forward to the next one, and really looking forward to your thoughts and feelings on Season 5 (which is tied with S3 for best season for me).

The Mad Titan

Although I'm always ready for a new buffy, wasn't today supposed to be an angel day?

x_Rhi_x

"adam was a disappointing villain" yup...but we're nearly at season 5, which many (including me) consider the best season!

DakaraJayne

It’s 3 buffy eps in a row and then 3 Angel eps in a row. I hope I’ve done the order right! Haha

x_Rhi_x

She hasn't seen finale of s5 I'm guessing that was a typo!

Raven Dark

Shoot! Yes, that was a mistake. It's fixed. Thanks for pointing that out.

Koz

Well, that was very good. 🙂

I think the problem they had with Adam was Professor Walsh was supposed to play a much bigger role in the season or even meant to be the big bad but had scheduling conflicts with other shows she was on. So they had to kinda rewrite a lot of the second half of the season main story.

Darrell Palmer

I remember another fan posting on another Patreon account that they had seen an interview with the actress who played Professor Walsh and that she said she would have liked to do more episodes, but that she was only contracted to do the number that we've seen and she was not asked to do more. The problem was really that the actor playing Oz wanted out to do other projects and the writers had to rework the entire season to accommodate him. Oz's arc with the female werewolf was supposed to cover a lot more episodes.

Collinson

There seems to be some kind of behind the scenes drama as Marti Noxon said she was supposed to be the big bad of the season but it didn't work out and Joss has said the actress was difficult to work with. So I do think she was supposed to do more but something happened that meant it didn't work out.

I never really liked adam as a villain either. theres a couple reasons i think. First, his siency cyborg apearance feels kind of weird next to all the fantasy demons etc to me. but most importantly, adam kind of suddendly appears, imediately is something that buffy can't beat, but then only sporadically appears. They never build up his character, or history. He is just a sience experiment. To me his death also feels very quick, i mean in how many episodes did adam actually do anything. He just doesn't feel like a massive threat for most of the time. Spike playing both sides constantly, his loyalty can be bought for a bag of reeses pieces really. You were right on the tension already being there between the scoobie's, and I do like how they handled that this episode. As you rightly stated this (in your post aswell) episode really is the finale in a way, or atleast the climax of the season's story, and i look forward to your thoughts on the next one :D.

More thanks than usual for this reaction as watching it on my phone kept my spirits up when I was flagging a bit queuing to see Her Majesty. Although I think George Hertzberg did a reasonable job with the material he was given, the character of Adam had a number of flaws most of which were caused by [redacted: spoiler]. You could say that Jonathan saved the day as it was he who identified Adam's power source in Superstar! It was funny (knowing what happens) watching your fury at the end of the last episode. You were not alone; I remember the bulletin boards going ape-**** over it at the time. 🙂 And for a looong week!

Kate

Agree, I didn't find Adam interesting in this!... or in Age of Ultron :)

JoDaNa81

Same. Season 5 is my favorite, too.

JoDaNa81

5 is my favorite, 3 is my second favorite.

Ed Green

Almost makes me wish I hadn't queued for Her Majesty on Wednesday instead of Thursday.

Just to clarify, because Dak seemed a little confused about this; the Initiative WAS the government. A govern is not some monolithic entity, it's a huge heterogeneous group of people, departments and agencies. I doubt that the secretary for work and pension or the one for public transport were in any way involved with the Initiative. At best you might imagine a cabinet member or two involved in the operation, maybe the chancellor, and just because you need someone to fudge the budget to have the founds to run something like the Initiative. I agree with you, and I already previously stated, that Adam look is not particularly effective, even if not worst of many blockbusters of the last years that were so forgettable that I have actual huge problems remembering them. I guess that his appearance could be distracting for a first time viewer, I honestly can't remember how I reacted to him the first time and, now, how he looks doesn't bother me at all. Also, we would do him a disservice if we would define Adam as the big bad of the season, to be correct we should identify Adam+Initiative as the big bad, after all, for a good part of the season, is the Initiative the real source of the challenges and threats, arriving at forcing the scoobies into hiding at a certain point. Adam is just the final evolution of the Initiative. For this same reason, I think that his Frankenstein nature was inevitable, he represents the army and the technology mashing with the demons and the supernatural, that was also the mission of the Initiative. Anyway, as I already said it before, I find the combo Adam plus Initiative a different and interesting antagonist and worked really well as support for the story arc, or growing arc, of the characters in this season, furthermore, the reason for both are maybe simple but clear, on the contrary, in the case of the Mayor, it's clear to me what he wanted but it's still quite confusing the why. Now, let's talk about what I see an issue highlighted by this double episode. The strains between the scoobies have gone from, let's say, 5 to 10 in the space of few scenes, and they fall too easily for what Spike said. I mean, he's Spike, they never trusted him. As viewers anyway we accept it because they actually showed us existing and growing problems in the relationships among the group, but this is the problem. I think that they made an amazing job laying out, in a smooth and natural way, these growing issues of connection and communications among the scoobies from episode 1 till, more or less, episode 13/14, but then, instead of going on and building up on that foundation, they basically dropped the ball. What is basically the central theme of this season has been overshadowed by other stories. Arrived at this point it should have been clear to us that the situation was at a breaking point and it only took a little push (Spike) to make them implode. Instead, even this issues seemed to be overshadowed and in, a certain way, resolved in the last episodes. We saw them sharing the same room in episode 14 and working all together in the following episodes. They still show some bits of these issues in communication here and there but they never focus on them. This is, up to me, the main problem with this season, which otherwise remain one of the best written and cohesive, stylistically, season of the entire show and one of the my top three favourite. A last little thing in response to Dak's reaction in the previous episode. Anya complained that the others, Buffy and Willow, didn't like her, and, actually, she was quite right, especially for what concern Willow. She never liked her and, at best, she is barely starting to stand her, lets not forget that Anya is the only person, as far as I remember, that Willow ever punched in the face.

Josee (Griffe)

My memory of this episode is skewed apparently because the casting of the spell didn't take as much time/place as I remembered. It is interesting to me that they made Xander the heart of the gang. He is the character that is easily dismissed. The Zeppo episode wasn't wrong stating he was the go-to guy... for doughnuts. To be fair, he often is the contact person when they need something outside of the Scoobies, but  Giles could fill that job. But most of us know Xander is more than the goofy one, the token guy friend in the Buffy and Willow show. But it was hard for me (for many of us if we judge by the flack he received from the fandom) to see his true value in the group. They made him the heart, and if that entails being emotionally driven (as opposed to duty- or intellectual curiosity-driven) that was the right choice. Funny that he left himself out of the equation when he gave the idea to Giles...
