Hello All!

Dakrya be out in full force in this one, I'm embarassed...enjoy my pain. I need Joyce to be okay more than anything! She HAS to be okay. The creature in this one was VILE too, do not approve. Also, Ben is related to Glory? He's forever cleaning up her messes apparently...think we will see more of him. Cant wait to read your comments to this one!

Have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support!

Much love

Dakara x

Willow's idea that some of the stars we see in the night sky have already died is possible in theory, but not likely in practice. The most distant star visible to the naked eye is about 16000 light years away from us, meaning that its light takes 16 000 years to reach us, so if it had exploded any time in the last 16 000 years, what Willow said would be true. However, the star closest to the end of its life that can be seen with the naked eye is Betelgeuse, and it still has an estimated 100 000 years life left in it, so Willow's idea is unlikely to be true in practice.

Buffy is such an amazing character and certainly an inspiration for me. It seems as though she not only has superhuman physical strength but also has superhuman mental strength, which comes completely from the person within. She's so strong for her family and at only 19 still so young. The monster in this one is definitely one of the creepiest in the show and it's amazing how well this show does horror.

Nicholas Corgan

"Why would all of them be there?" She's the team mom. Xander and Willow's moms are toxic, and Anya and Tara don't have moms. Think back to when Angelus killed Jenny. Joyce was the one there for Willow when she heard, not her mom.

It's not my favorite episode, but I can't deny it's incredibly well done. The emotional drama in this one is very real due to some truly outstanding acting from SMG and Kristine Sutherland (Joyce). Plus, we get some of the mystery unfolding with Ben, some entertaining moments with Spike and Anya (I agree - more Anya all the time), and probably the grossest monster we've ever had on the show. Great description - "like a cockroach ate a toddler". I'm with you about that conversation at the end. I'm glad they went that way, with that honesty. I always tear up at that scene - it's not just you. :-)

This is one of the scariest episodes for me, not because of the monster because of the all-pervading sense that everything is falling apart. Including sanity and the security of the health and safety of your loved ones. That dance music has been imprinted on my mind for the last 13 years, especially whenever I feel really scared or upset about something. When Buffy breaks down you know it's okay to break down yourself. I keep a copy of a Buffy DVD in my room so I can look at Sarah Michelle Gellar for reassurance when I feel the need to. Because of her phenomenal acting as well as how inspiring and relatable a character Buffy is.

Don't know if anyone follows astronomy news but Betelgeuse underwent a shift in apparent luminosity ( something 640 yr ago since that's the light travel time) so "summin's up" 🤷‍♂️

It’s so interesting. You’re the only reactor I’ve seen who had an instant distrust of Ben😆. I never thought much of him at first, just thought he’d be another bland love interest if Buffy moved on from Riley. This wasn’t one of my favorite episodes of the season but the scene of Buffy having a breakdown in the kitchen does hit hard. She has so much weight on her shoulders as is, than dealing with a sick mom and a little sister to take care of, it’s understandable if she falls apart sometimes. It’s a lot for a 19-20 year old (I think that’s Buffy’s age here, not SMG’s of course.) Spike is such a creepy bugger, stealing knickers in the last episode, now pictures, yeesh.

The Queller wasn't making Joyce have the flash of haziness; it's the other way around, kind of. The Queller was drawn to people with mental instability, to "quell" the so-called problem; in this case that there were an increasing presence of people with mental instability in Sunnydale.

The dishes scene is so heart breaking. The only time she can cry is when she's alone because she has to be strong in front of Joyce and Dawn. But she can't even just sit alone in the corner and have a cry - there are still dishes that need to be done! Buffy is taking on so much. And the last scene with Buffy and Joyce. We see Buffy weigh up for a few seconds whether to tell Joyce the truth about Dawn. You were shocked that she told Joyce the truth but it makes prefect sense to me. My interpretation is that part of Buffy's decision is that she knows there is a real chance her mum won't make it through the surgery. Buffy doesn't want the last she says to her mum to be a lie.

Video on Betelgeuse from a couple of years ago. In summary the dip in luminosity indicates the star is near the end of it's life, but that process could last up to 150,000 years. I'm not sure if you're talking about any more recent information however. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpLCu145-Zk

Riley is letting vampires feed off him because it's the only way he sees in his current circumstances to satisfy his deep-seated need to be needed. And once again Buffy doesn't need him. (It probably didn't help that Spike was there.) Did you spot the significance of Spike's helping hand? They did a close-up on it to highlight it! In Fool for Love, Buffy pushed Spike to the floor and said he was beneath her. Here, she took his hand and let him raise her so they could stand together (she could easily have jumped to her feet).

Yeah, this is a rough episode even under good circumstances. Especially if you've ever known someone with similar issues, like with alzheimer's for instance. I was so tense watching this one but I will say, and I feel bad for this, but when you took off your glasses so you physically didn't have to see that scene it made me laugh out loud and broke the tension for me so thank you lol.

Raven Dark

In addition to everyone being there because she's the team mom like others have said, they were also there to support Buffy and Dawn. They're Buffy's closest friends and Giles is a mentor and a surrogate father. Loved this reaction. My god, I love season 5 so much.

DakaraJayne

I think people misunderstood my ‘why are they all there comment’ here in the UK the only time everyone is allowed to be in the hospital is when the situation is serious and not looking too good. I know how much the guys love Joyce and Buffy, that wasn’t my worry - it was literally me being scared for Joyce. ‘Why are they all there?’ Translates to ‘omg this must be serious and Joyce is in trouble if they’re all there right now!’

PongPong31

Lol people do drop in for the tiniest of things where I'm from. Too often infact. So you're good Dak.

Stargazer1682

Interesting, you have a much more nuanced perspective with Riley than most people have. Usually by this point in the season, people are just over Riley, nothing he does is right. I do think it's much more complex, as you say.

John

That part always stuck out at me as being odd, but I am 100% on board with your rationale. Of course, when you do stop to think about what we know about the other parents vs how Joyce treats all of them so lovingly, it definitely puts that scene into context. Thanks!

John

Watching Buffy break down really shook me and then that conversation with Joyce at the end broke me. I'm so glad Buffy was honest, and Joyce's reaction was pretty wonderful with so much unconditional love. I love these characters so much. Season 5 has been so intense but really incredible. Thanks for sharing.

The reason people in the states leave lights on when they are out, is to make it look like someone is home, to, hopefully deter thieves from braking in. Two different actresses play the Quellor, aka "the Space lamb", or, more popularly, "The Killer Snot Monster from Outer Space"!

Thom Purdy

They are all there to support Buffy, Joyce, and Dawn.

Bud Haven

The most interesting part of the episode to me was what happened in Buffy's house. Buffy in the kitchen when she turns on the radio with the loud music to drown out her mother's raving in the same way Dawn puts the pillow over her ears. She realized that in that moment she couldn't take what was happening and breaks down. Spike is obsessing over Buffy, but I think he has real feelings as well. After killing the Queller demon Spike helps Buffy up. And Buffy lets him, instead of ignoring his hand and getting up. We see that Riley saw it as well. And finally Buffy reassuring Joyce and Dawn, holding them as if she was the parent and they were the children.

Bart Aansorgh

Aw sweet Dakrya, This episode is a rough one. creepy af, but well done I think. Ben keeps popping up and the intrigue with him builds. Riley's having some fetish there at the beginning. the scene that hurts the msot to me, is the one where Dawn gets upset with everyone saying she aint real. Just the fact that she feels like she's being rejected by the world. I think the stuff with Joyce is so well done. They've captured the feeling of the situation quite well imo. Can think if much more to say but I'm a bit knackered so I'll save it for the rest :).

boleynns

The Queller demon wasn't causing madness. Joyce's mental state was caused by her tumor pressing on her brain, and the reason the Sunnydale Mental Ward is overflowing is because of Glory sucking the brains out of people -- hence why Ben summoning the Queller demon would be "cleaning up" after Glory.

Phoenix Dawn

That scene between Joyce and Buffy in the end is one of my most favourites. Sutherland just knocks it out the park. I cry every time!

Shaun Houghton

To clarify it is not a case of why are all the visitors there. It is a case of why is the hospital allowing so many to be there. If the hospital is allowing it, then the situation must be serious.
