Hello All!

I loved this!! Seeing Buffy stand up for herself and absolutely slay was EVERYTHING to me. I also loved that Giles was so protective & supportive to/with her & it made me emotional. Glory is a god, confirmed. Ben must be equal to that or close to it, at a guess. Sit down council! Buffy & the Scoobies are in town!!!

Have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support!

Much love

Dakara x

I watched the series when it originally aired, so I love re-watching it with you after so many years. Thank you for choosing to react to it. So many great scenes and the biggest out-loud laugh for me in the whole series was Anya's "Willow's a demon?!" Willow is my favorite character, but Anya is a close second. Weirdly, Vamp Harmony is third. I love cute quirkiness.

2:00 "Not in American TV my friend. [British people] are all evil in American TV." This is a common misunderstanding between Americans and Brits. We don't make so many of our villains British because we perceive you as evil, we do it because we perceive you as clever and sophisticated. Making a villain British is an easy way to communicate to American audiences that the most dangerous thing about that character is his/her cleverness. And we don't just do it with villains either. You'll notice that scientists and university professors also tend to be disproportionally British in American media. Come to think of it, Giles and Spike are perfect examples of each.

I know he's not a regular cast member, but I've always thought it was a bit of a coup for the show getting Harris Yulin to play Quentin Travers. Guy's a brilliant character actor who has acted alongside some major Hollywood names, including Burt Lancaster, Faye Dunaway, Al Pacino and Harrison Ford. Also another one of the 'British characters' on Buffy who is actually played by an American.

Love the ending Buffy speech. Shows just how far Buffy has grown. I also love glory as a villain. She is just like the stereotypical popular girl in highschool who wants everyone to worship her but this time it's literally because she is a god.

m.,

Ah yes. The subtle beginnings of the running joke that whenever Buffy tells Spike to fuck off - she'll be knocking on his door 5 minutes later

Buffy's speech at the end has to be one of the most satisfying bits in the entire show, and any time Joyce and Spike get screentime together is always a treat.

I get chills watching this episode. So much tension throughout but also so much humour and excellent dialogue (Willow's a demon!?) The Council interviewing the Scoobies always gets a laugh from me and I can't help but cheer along with them when Buffy gives Travers and his team their orders. Glory at Buffy's house had me biting my nails. It's so tense, and Buffy dropping off Joyce and Dawn at Spike's crypt shows just how desperate the situation is, but also that despite everything she really does trust Spike. His and Joyce's mutual love of Passions is fun. (It was a daytime soap that ran in the US around that time. It had Supernatural elements, like Timmy the doll, but it was regarded as a pretty trashy show) I'm glad you're enjoying this season. It really is starting to get intense and we've got quite the wild ride ahead of us in the back half of the season. Good luck.... I won't say anymore 'cause I think you're understanding me....

John

he called her Pet! omg, I'd just die. (swoon)

Stargazer1682

I always enjoy him as the Judge in Ghostbusters II

Stargazer1682

A twist on the Buffy twist on horror movie clichés - what if a serial killer is stalking a blonde down an alley, and the blonde turns around and eats the serial killer.

Stargazer1682

Very random theory that kind of ties into something in this episode - I suspect Joyce uses her "gallery" as a front to run a smuggling operation. It explains why she always has crates filling the house whenever they do inventory, and can afford to fix up the house when it gets damaged (like the zombies in Dead Man's Party). Or her hanging up random pieces from the gallery, like it's her own personal collection. Giles has since become her fence, and is the real reason he bought the magic shop. He helps her identify the rarest antiquities better than the person she used to work with; and can spot things of a mystical nature, to avoid another issue like with the mask. It's also how he got ahold of the statue in this episode that they said was illegal to have been removed from Burma and could melt human eyeballs.

Claire Eyles

Definitely. He's also great as the corrupt cop in Scarface, that scene where Al Pacino's character shoots his character in the stomach & he's like, "WTF? You can't kill a cop?" & then Pacino's like, "Whoever said you was one" & raises his gun to unload the entire clip on him, and his character's last words are 'Eff You!", OMG legendary scene. :D

This made me laugh way more than is appropriate.

Stargazer1682

"That was excellent" - somehow a description of the episode finds its way into the script.

My friend went to Columbia School of the Arts in Chicago and took a writing for TV class where they only covered this episode. I should've went to that school lol

Xander....I believe Dakara would like to have a word with you....

Lol the look she gave at the attempted British accent.

So first of all two things. You've figured out by now why season 5 is so many a persons favourite season. Its just sooo good. 2nd. Quentin fcking Travers. I swear every time he opens his mouth, it only takes 2 seconds and i wanna smash his face. Giles was gold in this episode. He truly is Buffy's father figure. The friends in the interviews are a nice bit of leveity and comedi in an otherwise quite heavy episode. The Spike situation is interesting, on one hand she doesn't really trust spike and dislikes him, but on the other hand theres a part of her that knows that spike wouldn't betray her at the moment. Its an interesting dichotomy. I just love how this season builds. Enjoy the ride :)

This is a great episode in general, but also a great episode that highlights the show's primary metaphore of being the slayer for growing up. Take Buffy's mini freak-out to Giles about the Council's review: "But no one else is gonna be asked the questions that I can't answer. They're gonna expect me to be like a Slayer and, and know stuff, but I'm just me and I don't know anything." Replace the word "slayer" with "grown-up", and that's how we all feel at some point in the transition from child to adult (and many points after that). But at the end of the episode Buffy realizes that being "just me" is enough. This is why the show is so relatable and still resonates many years later.

An episode called 'Checkpoint' is a great time to take a holiday after. A fun coincidence. Happy holidays Dak. 🙂

The Royal Family are modest. (Excluding Andrew and Harry.)

Ah yes, the episode where the streak of anglophobia that runs through the show is at its strongest (it's not for nothing that it's, rather implausibly, the Watchers' Council of Great Britain). This seems to come from Joss Whedon who apparently had rather a rough time of it at public school in England. Given what we now know of him this may not be too surprising. Spike is still trying to win the affections of Buffy. It's just the chip stops him doing what he said he'd do to win Drusilla back, and nothing else has worked. And "a bloke has to try". So, now he's helping her and others. Doing so selfishly as in the last episode or unselfishly but pointing it out (as with the vampire this ep) didn't work either. This time he just agreed to help keep Buffy's family safe which got a more positive response. I have trouble taking the Knights of Byzantium seriously. They obviously know who the Slayer is but they send four men with bladed weapons to kill her! Why not twenty armed with machine guns?

Gabe Morales

Am I the only one who would’ve loved a Joyce/Spike spin-off?

Michael

The Knights of Byzantium remind me of people at the renaissance fair who take it WAY to seriously, you know guys this the 20th century ( at the time)try using guns
