Hello All!

Andrew's personality really came in clutch during this episode. The comedic timing was spot on and even got a little emotional towards the end too. Xander and Anya getting close again, not sure if it really resolved anything but it was 'nice'. Robin still has issues with Spike of course, I do however think Buffy and the Apocalypse may be keeping him busy for now though. Next ep is

Angel is next on the watch list, I dunno about you but I am DYING to see/hear about what is going on with Cordy!!

Hope you enjoy the reaction folks. Have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support!

Much love

Dakara x

Hey Dak, good to see you back. Hope you had a nice holiday! This episode has to be my favourite from this season. It's a lot of fun and has plenty of that quirky humour that Buffy does so well. I wasn't the biggest fan of Andrew back in the day, but rewatches have made me appreciate him a lot more. He's an interesting character, and while I have issues with this season as a whole, Andrew's story arc is one of the things I think it does really well. Nearly on the final stretch of episodes. Eek!

Bart Aansorgh

This episode is one of the golden quirky ones. I feel like every season has one or two and this one was brilliant. Andrew really has a great script and comedic timing. He's often pathetic, but in a funny way. He brings a different comedy than Xander and Anya do, and it fills in the heavyness of this season well. I agree that this episode shows Andrew's character well, and how he deals and struggles with things. The scene with Willow and Kenedy, with andrew goin off about Xanders carpentry is one of my favourites. Its just throws off your perspective. Robin and Spike is getting messy quickly for sure. Xander and Anya get a bit closer and maybe some closure, but will it really be one more time? doubtful with those two. Lookin forward to the next one :)

"In my plan, we are beltless" I find this episode hilarious in many places and very meta - not only because it is a story told mainly from an outsider's POV but also it is done in such a way that if you just happened upon this episode as a first-time watcher, I think it is a really helpful and entertaining way to bring you up-to-date. And as a long-time fan, I love the call-back to the early HS episodes like "Out of Mind, Out of Sight" and Buffy just flat-out telling Principal Wood part of the original premise of the show: "There's a thing that happens here over the Hellmouth.. Where a way a thing feels actually starts happening for real.. Being at high school can feel like being at war. Now it's true." Or in other words, "high school is hell". I also love Andrew describing Xander as "the Heart" of the Scoobies. This is also one of the original premises of the show: Xander is metaphorically Buffy's heart, as was first suggested to the viewer in S4's "Primeval", when we saw the tarot cards. They even give a shout-out to “Buffyspeak”, which was an actual term coined by fans and critics for the special way the characters talk throughout the series: When Principal Wood tells Buffy the evil from the Hellmouth is getting all “focus-y”, to which Buffy replies, "You're even starting to speak like me"- get it? "Buffy speak"? Dak, I think your view of the Xander-Anya conversation was very accurate. From the first time they were physical, Xander has always followed Anya's emotional lead. It may be just me, but when Anya said it was the last time, I saw tears in Xander's eyes. The scene with Buffy and Andrew over the seal at the end is fantastic and even better upon rewatch in my opinion. Andrew is great, but SMG just really nails Buffy's complexity of emotions. Her unflinching nerve. Her resolve to do what needs to be done. Her sadness that this is the way it is.

Who knew Andrew would be the first ever Buffy reactor.

This is one of my favorite episodes completely because of Andrew. His making a documentary about Buffy was such a genius decision by the writers and I can't thank them enough. I mentioned before that my favorite characters tend to not be the leads, and this is one of those cases. I've also mentioned that I thought if Charmed had starred Willow, Anya, and Cordelia (well, not three witches, but close enough for me) it would have been fantastic; I'm adding Andrew for the Leo role. Anya saying "Why can't you just masturbate like the rest of us?" made me feel weird because half a dozen images appeared in my head. Oversharing is a thing, Anya. 😳 The slo-mo shots with exaggerated, contrast-y colors and tossing of hair, etc. were fantastic. Again, more genius writing. Every time I see certain characters, those will be the images I think about. While I knew that Buffy didn't kill Andrew, it still made me feel the same way I felt when I first watched the episode and I credit not only the writing, but also the acting. When Andrew started crying I welled up a bit too. Only 6 episodes left, what are we going to do? 🥹 Thanks Dak!

I think the reasons for why Buffy didn't like Andrew and his documenting, was everything she said to him at the seal, that life isn't a story and him trying to act like it's justification for what he did to Jonathan ,and acting like no one is responsible because it's just a script etc.

StephanieB

The slo-mo shots kill me. I love how everyone (i.e. all the girls) are wearing their regular clothes but Spike is shirtless. Oh, Andrew <3

StephanieB

I admit, that didn't occur to me but I think you are totally on to something there! This has been an ongoing underlying theme throughout the series- one of the more notable times was in "Lovers Walk", when Xander (Buffy's heart) and Willow (Buffy's spirit) are conflicted in their feelings, reflecting Buffy's conflicted feelings for Angel in that episode. Now that you say it, I think Andrew's comment in this episode was totally on purpose!

StephanieB

I completely agree. It's truly the most re-watchable show I've ever encountered. If you really want to have your mind blown, I highly recommend Mark Field's book Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Myth, Metaphor and Morality. He analyzes the entire series in depth, episode-by-episode. It's available on Kindle and in paperback form. I just looked up "Storyteller" (I hadn't gotten there yet in my reading) and regarding the Xander-Anya dynamic, he basically says exactly your thoughts word-for-word! He also has many other insights regarding the narrative and breaking the fourth wall aspects of this episode, which are fascinating. For example, he observes that when Andrew turns off the camera in the basement, Buffy becomes the storyteller- she even says, "I'm making it all up". So many levels, Adam!

StephanieB

Okay, Adam- one more recommendation: if you haven't already found him on Youtube, please check out Passion of the Nerd. He does video summaries/commentaries on BtVS episodes. Sadly he is only up to the middle of season 5 but they are definitely worth checking out. He bases a lot of his thought process on Mark Field's book (it's where I first heard of Field, in fact). His video essays are full of so much detail and levels of interpretation, I think you would really enjoy them.

I'm interrupting the "Dakarathon" I've been immersed in since I joined at the beggining of this month to inform that the link to 7x16 from the website doesn't link here, but to the previous episode (in case somebody sees this and wants to fix that). Okay, I'm back to the scheduled programming
