Hello All!

A heavy Spike episode is a yes from me. Great to see some of his backstory & I think this episode allowed us to understand him as a character even more too. I felt for Robin a lot in this but I am so relieved that he wasn't successful in killing Spike. Some harsh but fair words shared by Buffy & Giles is adamant that Spike will be her undoing.

Hope you enjoy the reaction folks. Have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support!

Much love

Dakara x

15:40 Dakara, give this bit from Andrew another watch, then think about Willow telling Buffy she’s taking off for a few days.

I just watched Angel ep. I’m so mad at myself for not verbalising that I thought that convo was odd haha

I think Spike's vicious history as a vampire is due to a desire to convince himself and the world that he's not as pathetic as the demon who used to be his mother told him he was. So when he was triggered, it was bringing that desire to the forefront of his consciousness. I'm quite glad that you didn't pick up on the 'call from someone named Fred in LA who sounds effeminate' line, as it will make for a (slightly, because it'll be pretty damn exciting anyway) more exciting watch of Orpheus on Thursday.

Spike is such a well crafted character. Many people understandably hated the character after the events of 6x19 and I think that is why the writers created Wood. He embodies that desire to make spike pay for his past sins and drawing the parallel between buffy and wood's mom is a way of saying that buffy and wood's mother both made a choice to get involved with the demon that spike was (buffy through the twisted relationship and his mom through fighting) what spike is saying is that he doesn't feel the need to apologize for the consequences of their choices because he was that demon not who he is now with a soul. He is separating himself from that even though the demon part is still inside him just like angel. Symbolically the first was controlling the evil in spike but now he is finally free to make his own choices just like buffy and wood's mom did and he chose to do something good despite his desire to kill him showing a huge change in his character. No longer just driven by his desires.

Sorry to add another comment but I forgot to mention the buffy and Giles part of the episode. The watcher and slayer dynamic has always been a metaphor for patriarchy and throughout the years buffy has rejected that authority when it came from the counsel. She has always had Giles help with guiding her and stepping in to make the hard calls (glory and willow for example) But now in this season buffy has become the patriarchy. She is the one that is supposed to be making the decisions and helping and guiding young women like the counsel did. Her mindset has changed about things in the past that she never understood fully because she was not in this role before. Remember the test with that vampire. Earlier this season buffy did the same thing to the potentials basically. Her attitude now is clashing with the only other patriarchy left. Also we now know why spike and Joyce always got along.

Will Buffy ever trust Giles again? This is the second time he has betrayed her after Helpless. And she knew he wasn't trustworthy in The Gift. Giles also abandoned her at times of need. The Freshman and Tabula Rasa. He's not dependable anymore. Buffy's scene with Wood was one of the most intense of the series. "More importantly I'll let him." Buffy has never said anything like that before. Buffy said she would now let Dawn die if it would save the world, when she wouldn't to defeat Glory. I think a big reason is the Potentials. How can she be willing to put their lives at risk and not be willing to do the same with Dawn?

This feels like a pretty big betrayal from Giles. When he drugged Buffy in season 3 it was something he was conflicted about, and when he left in season 6 it was because he believed she could stand on her own two feet. Even when he talked about killing Dawn in the season 5 finale, I don't think there was ever a point where you thought he might actually do it. But in this episode he seems to have lost faith in Buffy's judgement to the point where he would go behind her back. On the other hand, it's not like Giles is the only character who feels that Buffy has a blind spot for Spike. I think we already know how Xander feels about him, and I liked Anya's little dig at Buffy, she clearly has a chip on her shoulder from earlier in the season, but she's not exactly wrong. Tension in the ranks as we go into the final episodes!

I'm of two minds about this episode. Firstly, it's a great episode and there are some awesome scenes. The flashbacks to Spike's past were great and I felt for his mother. One odd thing happened though. During the scene where his mother meets Dru I was really focused on the screen when I felt something touch my arm. I jumped and glanced over to find Cleo, the best and most gentle dog in the whole world who had gone to bed almost two hours ago. She had woken up and wanted to check on me I guess, so she walked down 4 flights of stairs to find me (I turned the basement into my hobby room) and booped my arm with her nose to get my attention. For context I keep 2nd-3rd shift hours, so I don't go to bed until 4:30-5 am. Anyway, after getting her safely back to bed I continued viewing. I thought the scenes with Giles having a conversation with Buffy as she beat the sh*t out of Richard the vampire were both interesting and funny, but also a bit sadistic. You're the Vampire Slayer, not the Vampire Bully; Poor Richard got a 20 minute beatdown, for God's sake. He seemed nice too. Again, a great episode overall, but I did feel disappointed in some aspects. I loved the Buffy/Spike romance era, but the core of the series is the (usually) unbreakable bond and friendship of the Scoobies. All of a sudden we're back to Buffy/Spike-centric episodes with only a handful left. Not to mention adding all the Potentials to the mix, so we get random people that we mostly don't care about and they live in Buffy's house. I don't need any extra sides in what I consider the perfect meal. Also, I like Amenadiel and understand his quest to avenge his mother's death because all of us would want to make that our mission (LEGALLY 😏), but I didn't really care. If this was last season, yes. But I want Willow. I want Xander. I want Anya. I want Dawn. Hell, give Cordelia and Angel guest spots before the end. Three last points: Yeah, Dak, those doors did remind me of an extra wide version of the TARDIS doors (Please tell me you've watched at least the Tom Baker era of Classic Who and not just New Who). Dru was rubbing her belly because she had said to Spike's mother. "I'm the other that gave birth to your son.". I mean, you know how weird and crazy Dru is... I love her. ❤️ I always believed that the name "Crowley", used in both Supernatural and Buffy, was taken from Aleister Crowley, the occultist, poet, novelist, etc. The irony is that his last name is pronounced CrOHley, not CrOWley. People always ask for proof and the answer is "from the man himself". He wrote a poem called "The Convert" and in it there are the lines: "Where are you going, so meek and holy?" "I'm going to temple to worship Crowley." One sad note: Camden Toy, the actor that played one of the Gentlemen, Gnarl, and the Turok-Han (aka ubervamp) in Buffy and the Prince of Lies in Angel died exactly one week ago. R.I.P. Camden (May 31, 1955 - December 11, 2023). Thanks once again for a great watch, Dak! p.s. I kept getting "Video is unplayable" on Google Drive for some reason so had to use Dropbox. Luckily I didn't have any buffering issues this time.

I don't believe Buffy actually WOULD let Spike kill Robin, even when she says that she would. I almost can't but into that, because that really isn't who Buffy is as a character, and I don't go along with the idea that it's what she's turned into. Buffy has been a great character because she's actually GOOD, not just strong. Anyway, I was a bit taken aback by your not realizing what was happening on the phone with "Fred in LA," but I was excited that you'd be truly surprised by what happens on Angel. 😁

A very heavy episode indeed. I find it interesting, that Giles goes on about Buffy being set in stone about her decision and her feelings on that part, whereass he's doing the exact same thing. Regarding Spikes trigger and backstory, i think its really well done, the conclucsion he comes to at the end aswell. In the end, Buffy does exactly what Giles is telling her though. She acts like the general and stands her ground. Telling them to stuff it and deal with her decision. I never have too much to say about this episode. I think its really well done and the episode speaks for itself. I do agree that I hate seeing Giles and Buffy ont he outs, but what Giles did was a d*ck move and Giles and Wood just needed to get over themselves. Im lookin forward to the last episodes (*cries internally*) :).

I got the impression that Dru rubbing her belly was at least in part because she was thinking about eating Spike's mother.

Brian Dworak

Ah, possibly! Or both! Good call.
