*Correction - In a previous draft I mentioned that I was taking care of my dog all by myself, and this isn't fair to Grace. She is paying for half of his bills and seeing him multiple times a week on top of taking him on two overnights a week. Grace and I are still figuring out what our working relationship looks like but it was not fair to make it seem like she had abandoned me or our dog.

Hello Skele-friends,

I may have gotten too ambitious with my post-Faceball plans. The video topic that won the poll was Garbo Amazing Ports, which is a project I’ve been kicking around since at least late-2023. But what’s the hold up?

There’s a thing that happens with you go the gym. I like to lift heavy things, it’s a lot of fun for me. I am a huge dork, but deep down I am also a macho jock douche. But when I’ve not gone to the gym a month or maybe two, I always have this moment where I have to scale back my reps and the weights. I always wanna get right back to the big pump, but I need at least a session or two to get back into things, even though it hasn’t been that long!

This is what happened with the latest videos. All of my last few projects have been really big ones and the problem with that is you lose practice on actually finishing projects! You just research, take notes, right down ideas, capture footage, pump up the outline until you realize it’s been several weeks and you haven’t really gotten anything done yet...I uploaded a re-edited UDUG video to YouTube and the response was really positive, something I try to never take for granted, but people also said they would prefer shorter projects if it meant more output from me. And that got me looking at the Garbo Amazing project and thinking about scaling it back. I wanted to cover ten games,

Space Invaders Atari 2600Burnout Legends DSMK11 Switch (Specifically the Krypt)Borderlands 2 VitaDragon Quest XI 3DSMedal of Honor Underground GBASplatterhouse TG16Hyrule Warriors 3DSArk Survival SwitchDoom SNES

…but I’ve decided to cut that in half to five, and if it does well, I’ll just do other five. Even with the research and footage I’ve already done, I needed to focus on closing! I’ve grown really rusty at closing projects, always the toughest and least fun part haha. I always get anxious about not bringing my A-game, my best work. But that’s just preventing me from getting you anything! This loop of worrying so much about doing good work that I don’t actually get anything done, it’s something I’ve been working on with my therapist. You’d think for as long as I’ve been doing this, I’d be good at it! If I’ve learned anything through all this is that there are things that you get better at, but they never get easier. And I have always loved the challenge of this, but I didn’t really consider how badly I needed to regain my sea legs.

Another reason I’ve been struggling is I’ve had to adjust to the solo life again. If you weren’t aware, I recently separated from my long time life and show partner. However, because of additional craziness, they didn’t actually move out until the end of April. Heading back to the single life was an adjustment for numerous reasons. Not the least of which is that I am now taking care of my dog Launchpad all by myself (though she does occasionally take Launchpad for a night or two). He recently lost his sister Dollop too and has needed more play and stimulation than ever, and I can’t neglect him either. The good news is my monthly-average steps are up almost 2000 more steps! But I’ve had to make a new normal work-day schedule. And then stuff like the other day, I thought I could do grocery shopping in the morning and then somehow have energy to for work. Yeah, didn’t get much done that day. But I had an awesome dinner.

I’m only bringing all this up for transparency, so you know what’s going on. I’m not asking for sympathy. You’ve all given me enough of that, don’t worry about Uncle Derek. As you get older, you face moments where you have to start over. In work, personal life, hobbies, family you’ll have to go back to square one again. It’s just how it is. I’m moving forward, and honestly not even exactly back at “square-one”!

So don’t forget to vote for this month’s UDUG! I gotta take the boy out for his post-dinner walk now and then Ima get back to freaking work and quit complaining! This is gonna be my year but I gotta put in the work.

Thanks as always for the continued support! I WILL see you again really soon!-UD

Love to see the motivation -- and especially the plan on stay motivated! Get that bag, Derek!

I would say to all this: go smaller. Some of your best watched videos are only 20-30 minutes. Not every video needs to be a magnum opus of 30-60 minutes or more (although it's appreciated). Keep it bitesized and digestible as much as possible going forward.

Scope is so important, because scope/feature creep is so easy to let in. I applaud this decision and I hope it makes you feel more comfortable in getting back to these smaller projects!

So glad you saw, read, and took those comments to heart. You're the best Uncle D

Yeah man, make it 3 parts. Make it 6. We’ll watch ‘um. I get that it might feel like a lack of thoroughness to focus in on a subset of what you want to cover, but for us it just means more Derek in our feeds more often. No complaints.

would love what you make of dragon quest XI 3DS

You go, Uncle Derek! Just like with lifting, you'll find your strength again. You just gotta be patient with yourself along the way.

To be honest I much prefer the shorter video's. For me it's way easier to sneak in a 20-30 min video in my busy day than one that takes as long as a standard movie. No matter how good the Youtuber, after 30 minutes I start skipping parts. But I do realize it's harder to cram all the good garbo into 20 minutes

If you make sure to mention that a part 2 is intended to be on the way then you don't really need to close it as such. You can always leave a proper concluding statement until part 2. Don't worry about it!

Agree with everyone that smaller scope is best. It will make the process so much better to produce and release your ideas in shorter videos, see how they are doing and go from there. Unless it's not very productive for you, maybe even try part 1 for a few different videos to share a variety of topics and see what sticks the most to return to at a later date. It might be difficult to leave some ideas or not mention a part 2 is planned, but seeing the reception and looking at what people are most excited to see more of will hopefully be a great motivator and way to organise your workload, or hopefully make things more manageable. Very happy to hear things are on the mend after all that has happened. Stay powerful and I hope to see the fruits of your labour soon Uncle Derek. :)

Transparency is always best, and I can empathize with the project management bit. When you take on huge projects that don't have simple A to B solutions it can be hard juggling all those steps and your personal life. I am finding that out right now with writing my dissertation!

I'm in support of whatever works best for you as well. I'm always looking forward to what you got coming up, and willing to keep waiting. I know it's been a rough year or longer, but it's good seeing you able to push through it and get back to what you want to do. I think the shorter videos could be a good idea to get back in the flow as well, and keeps everyone satisfied to still see something while we wait for the longer projects.

If I’m being real, I feel like one of these days I’m gonna see a post from Uncle Derick that says “you know what, I’m out”. That’s what I truly fear… and the reason is I would understand (on multiple levels). So for this one viewer, I just consider it a blessing that SSFF is continuing on. Much love

Violet De Boer

Hope everything goes okay! Ive had 10 emails with your update to the post so far, I think it is sending dw lol

Tighter focus will not only help you out personally but will also improve the content. Trust yourself: you know what you need and you know what your channel needs. You’ve been doing this for a long time my fiend, trust your gut

Hey dude. This is translator Tom; we talked a couple times on Twitter when I was still on there. Just wanted to say you have all my sympathy in figuring out how to fly solo. I've been translating games for over a decade now and a lot of times, time management can still feel like a very imprecise art more than a science. Some days on easier projects, I get my full work load done and have energy to spare for cooking and side projects. Other days when the projects are rougher (like when I'm proofreading or editing less experienced translators with iffy work), sometimes it's a victory if I manage to cook more than just some simple pasta at the end of the night. And don't even get me started on house cleaning! Point being, as long as you're putting one foot in front of the other and not giving up on yourself, that's what counts. Sometimes that's a victory worth celebrating all on its own, especially now. Just trust that you'll do right by yourself and your work, especially since at the end of the day, we're here for you, dude. Not as just Guy Who Makes Fun Content, but you specifically as the dude behind it (with credit to everyone else involved, of course). 2025 is going to be an imperfect year for the vast, vast majority of us, I reckon. But being honest with each other and sticking together is how we're all gonna make it out in one piece and the way you've always acted and continue to do now, I'm not worried in the least you'll land on your feet and figure out. Always do what's right for you, dude. We're all with you 110 percent, even those of us out here in Japan. 😉 Rooting for you!
