UPDATE: As I've held the mailbag Q&A for this month, I won't be answering further questions this month unless they're really quick. Hold big questions for September! Hi everyone! While at GenCon we got to make a big announcement: Twogether Studios is going to be collaborating with to create a new campaign setting for Daggerheart. I can't tell you much about this world yet, but what I'll say is that it's NOT Eberron, but that I believe that Eberron fans will enjoy exploring the world. I'll be sharing more details as soon as I can, as well as what this means for our other projects. I will be continuing to support Eberron here, with the Q&As, Dragonmarked House articles (the first Deneith article is coming soon!), and this question thread, but as things unfold I'll also be sharing glimpses of the new world we are developing.

We're going to have two live Q&As this month:

Deep Dive—Saturday August 9th at 10 AM Pacific: Subject TBD. We'll be voting on the subject soon!

Wednesday August 20tj at 6 PM Pacific: Mailbag Miscellany. As usual, this will be where I'll answer questions on any topic from you.

POST QUESTIONS HERE. You can ask questions about anything: Eberron, my other games, game design in general, what I'm reading at the moment, or anything else. If I can answer a question in a few minutes, I might answer it here. Otherwise, I’ll answer the most interesting questions when I do the Mailbag Miscellany Q&A. As a general rule, I will only answer a maximum of one question per patron per month, so if you ask a lot of questions I'll only answer one of them, but you can always pose unanswered questions again next month!

Thanks for your support!

Congrats on getting to create and establish a whole new setting! Might get me to try out Daggerheart when it releases. I hope that both this new setting and Eberron Expanded are highly successful for Twogether Studios and that you are able to support both settings for as long as you choose to.

Congrats on making a new setting, Keith! I'm happy that you've finally gotten back into creating new worlds. No matter how much you love Eberron, getting to branch out is always nice. This question might be a bit out there, but: How might Eberron change if a different one of the Five Nations than Cyre was subjected to the Mourning? If Cyre was still to stand and another one of Galifar's components was claimed by grey mist? What kinds of divergences could you think of, and do you think there'd be one nation in particular that would be the most interesting to fall?

bluefyr22 .

Im so excited to see the new setting. I will 100% be getting daggerheart because of this

MajorTotoro

Certainly a question that could be an entire series, but wondering in a general sense, how do you see Lhazaar's life having gone about? We know barely anything more than her expedition to the Principalities. Did she settle there and ruled until death? Did she explore more of Khorvaire? Any other grand feats?

Joey Norwood

Congratulations, Keith! I'm hoping this collaboration also UNLOCKS the Gate for you to write novels in your new setting!

Dragonback Lancer

What Magic the Gathering color combinations would you assign each of the Dragonmarked Houses?

Zachary Butler

I remember a couple of years ago when you talked about wanting to design a new setting. While I'm selfishly glad that you continued to work Eberron stuff, I'm very excited for you to get to explore new ideas in a way that directly helps you professionally. Congratulations Keith! What do you think is the animating source/power for revenants as they are presented in the Monster Manual? You've used the term "revenant" to describe certain Cults of the Dragon Below and a way for a player character to be connected to the Keeper. But these don't feel like they mesh with the story of a single individual returned to life consumed by revenge. That idea seems to point to the Fury, and in Chronicles of Eberron you describe vengeful hands, which sound like living revenants. You also mention Dolurrhi manifest zones as potentially producing revenants. I've written a revenant villain, and I see that I could associate her with any of these things, but I'm curious if you have one or two that would be your choice for writing an antagonist that has come back from the dead to seek revenge.

Congrats, Keith! Looking forward to seeing what is in store!

DivertedCircle

What kind of security devices do you see House Kundarak offering to the small mom and pop style shops or general home security? Alarm spell panic buttons that contact the city guards? Magical barriers that spring into place in convenience stores? Detect Magic scanners at store entrances?

Inquisitor Thomas

Rekkenmark and Thalios are incredibly close to each other, and were physically connected for years, what do residents of the cities generally think of each other?

Vixenlover42

First off, congratulations! Second, the King's Dark Lanterns get the most focus when it comes to King's Citadel in Breland. So, on a broad, high-level scale, what kinds of adventures do you see the other branches getting up to?

Oh! That Robin

Oo!! :D I’ve been itching try Daggerheart ever since I got the book recently and started reading it over so this is very exciting news. I’ve been getting into other RPGs outside of my D&D comfort zone (I’ve recently been deep diving into GURPS in particular with my friends and family to do a Resident Evil and Star Wars game for them respectively ^^) This post (as well as another persons question the one about the nations and the MtG colors because that really intrigues me too now that they mention it) inspires my question this time: is how would you utilize other games like Daggerheart (and if you’re familiar with GURPS, maybe that also :3) to tell Eberron stories in those systems and maybe others you might wanna showcase as a good fit for the setting? I guess it’s a pretty broad question but I’ve been literally making a Lady Illmarrow character sheet in GURPS so it seems inevitable I’m going to do Eberron in, like, every system I can reasonably do so as it’s probably my favorite RPG setting to play in (so thank you for that btw xD, I’m very excited to see this new Daggerheart setting too ^^)

Did Deneith broker the deal for the Valenar to fight for Cyre, or did Cyre negotiate with them directly?

Herbert Helzer

Congrats on the news! In Quickstone and other towns that produce quickstone, is anyone using it for products other than walls and structures? What’s the demand or market for fixed quickstone pots, vases, plates, mugs, furniture, countertops, etc.? What about fixed quickstone cobbles for streets and pavers for sidewalks? What if someone threw a pot with wet quickstone, applied glaze and then fired it in a standard kiln — no magic involved? Who profits from quickstone exports in Quickstone? Do the quarries also hold all the facilities and capacity to produce quickstone products?

PT MacKim

Congratulations on the Daggerheart setting gig! Looking forward to seeing what your brain will do with that system! Related question: while Eberron is of course an amazing world which has taken on a vibrant life all its own in a way only a few rpg settings ever have, are there other worlds you’ve hatched that aren’t as well known but still fire your imagination?

I was very excited to hear about Twogether producing a campaign setting for Daggerheart! Matt seemed super-excited about it during his interview with Todd Kenreck. As to my question for this month, continuing with my previous premise, let's assume a devastating terrorist attack by parties unknown has just occurred on Thronehold during the funeral of King Kaius III, injuring and potentially claiming the lives of a number of dignitaries from the Thronehold nations, including King Boranel and Crown Prince Wrogar of Aundair. Let's further assume that the intelligence community isn't certain who did it, but that there is reasonably compelling evidence pointing to one of several possible parties, such as the Lord of Blades, the Order of the Emerald Claw, or even the dragons of Argonnessen. IYE, what sort of impact would such an event have on the geopolitical climate of Khorvaire and what would it take to see some sort of alliance (temporary or otherwise) arise between two or more of the Thronehold nations as a result? I'm thinking of something akin to the Alethi Vengeance Pact from "The Stormlight Archive", if you're familiar with that series, but it needn't be anything so overt.

How might a Glabrezu from Shavarath, Mabar, or a native fiend differ in its schemes or Wish fulfillment (in earlier editions it could cast wish). And can you imagine a Glabrezu reaching the rank of Prakhutu?

The Bard Himself

Eye of Eberron says that The Golden Serpent (one of the few remaining Couatl and the patron to Miron’s Tears) has not manifested physically in the world in over 200 years. What does this mean exactly? They are not apart of the Flame, so where is the Golden Serpent when not "physically manifested?"

Jarrod Taylor

We know very little about some of the queens/monarch spouses/partners of Galifar royals- Who was Kaius I's wife? Boranel's spouses beyond Chaseva? Jarot's spouses? Karrn the Conqueror? If that is too broad for a Mailbaq question, are there any other pairings like Lady Darkheart or instances of royals marrying immortals/planar denizens?

Micaerys

In The Gates of Night we meet a small but fascinating collection of archfey, between the Brothers of Night and the scary yet gorgeous Queen of Dusk. Since then you have developed Thelanis, its layers and its politics even more, so my question is: beyond their own domains as archfey of moments of the day (twilight and night, mostly) how relevant are these archfey compared to the ones meeting in the Palace of the Moon? Do they attend themselves from time to time? Or do they stay out of the Moonlit Vale's dramas?

How does the Twelve police itself, does it at all? I imagine such a large organization will have more than a few rotten apples, ranging from Embezzlement to Unauthorized experiments. Do the Twelve have a group that monitors themselves and silently kills or excoriates members? Is this another responsibility of the Basilisk’s Gaze? To expand on this, what does Excoriation mean to a member of the Twelve? How do the Twelve keep track of who has been Excoratied and who hasn't? I read somewhere about Branding, but remember that was stated as an old way that's no longer publicly used.

Hey Keith, this sounds awesome! On the Discord, False pointed out that the Emerald Claw were branded as outlaws by Kaius III/Moranna, and that per the Galifar Code of Justice as covered in Sharn: City of Towers that outlaws are granted no legal status whatsoever in areas governed by the Code (and presumably the Code of Kaius). Does that mean that the PCs could basically murderhobo anyone the authorities determines belongs to the group?

Herbert Helzer

This might have to wait for the next Deep Dive into Dhakaan, but here goes: Blue Goblins. The ones with Psionics back in 3.5. Did they survive the Edition changes? If so, where do they exist — among the Darguuls, the Dhakaani Kechs, specifically in the Khesh’dar, or somewhere else entirely (like Sarlona)?

Leslie Mactir

When would a schism concept in the sovereign host developed and what would the all 9 and six and one style pre-schism faith looked like?

Earth Seraph Edna

What does it actually take to build a fiend-sealing Khyber dragonshard device? Suppose PCs want to build a device to seal away a rakshasa after dropping said fiend to 0 hit points. Or maybe it is multiple rakshasas, or perhaps the target in question is actually Mordakhesh. What goes into the construction of such an apparatus? I recall your 4e Dragon magazine issue #415 article on the Aurum mentioning that Alina Lorridan Lyrris could build such a device. "Alina has constructed a soul trap using Khyber shards that should be able to bind any sort of celestial or fiend. She wants the characters to test it for her . . . on the Inspired ambassador. Alternatively, she might employ the heroes as bodyguards at an embassy party while she attempts to accomplish the binding herself—without telling the PCs of her true plans at the party."

Patrick Reupert

What's your thought about the Talenta Halflings? Like... Where did they come from in your Eberron? How did it happen, that they inhabit the wasteland that is the Plains?

joakim almgren

I was wondering if there is any way for a group of characters to challenge a powerful quori in dal quor or if they would be powerless? Is there a way to set up a battle in Dal quor in which the characters are also able to shape the dreamspace that they are in and possibly challenge the Quori's power?

Sebastian Santin

Greetings, Mr. Baker. I am new to Patreon and wanted to ask you about Ethon Panjilcuttra, the artificer of the Lords of Dust. Has Ethron been able to create, make, or corrupt constructs for demons, such as forged ones or others? I am intrigued by an artificer like him who could contribute more than what is mentioned in the manual

What happened to the royal families of Thaliost, Daskaran, Wroat and Metrol post Galifar's Conquest? We know of Metrol's noble lines being pushed into East Cyre, that Breggan Blackcrown claims to descend from Wroat's royals, and that many of Breland's nobles come from Wroatian nobles who accepted to submit, but what happened to the former royalty? Semi-related, what happened to Malleon's bloodline after Breggor? Is there still an ir'Kas family with a claim on Sharn around?

Chris

Firstly, congratulations on the Daggerheart announcement. I'm hoping that the boxed sets are back in stock in time to drag my group through the learning process before your modules drop. Second, my group wrapped our first Eberron campaign earlier this year (3.5 years, 120 sessions, the party inadvertently launched a new age of Dhakanni conquest and got themselves named a full Kech, to boot. Whoops.) and I'm now planning our second Eberron campaign. Here's the question: the new campaign takes place a little over 1,000 years ago, right about the time Galifar is starting to get the itch toward empire and has just abolished slavery in Karrnath. I'm looking to start the campaign at a magical night market, in a coastal area (excluding Aerenal and Argonnessen.) At that point in Eberron's history, where would a coastal population center be large enough to support a big, thriving market of wonders?

What sorts of major goals could the Chamber be working towards through the Prophecy beyond just keeping the Overlords bound?

Dragonback Lancer

Changeling: The Dreaming has a lot of overlap with both Thelanis and Dal Quor. Was that a direct inspiration for either of them? And even if not, would you still recommend people check it out for inspiration in regards to those things?

Kcajkcaj99: Monsters of the Week

Question that I was typing up during the last live Q&A but didn’t quite finish before it was over. “One thing you brought up is the idea of the Citadel’s oaths being sworn to ‘the Crown.’ Is the Crown just ‘whoever the monarch is at the moment,’ or does it represent something broader than that? Like is there an idea that if a monarch went against ‘Brelish values’ and the policies of their predecessors, they could in some way be themselves a traitor or threat to ‘the Crown’”

Matt Dance

First of all, congratulations on the Daggerheart news! I look forward to seeing what you do with it. Now to my question. Have you ever used the Seren islanders in a campaign, and if so, how? either as a player or as a GM? Or how about the islands themselves? Are they essentially territories of the Vast? I think the idea of dragon-worshipping barbarians is just… *awesome* (the Totem Beach art in the ECS is iconic), yet I’ve never done anything with them. Looking to change that! And looking for ideas.

Dragons of Eberron states the Eyes of Chronepsis occasionally allow dragons to become dracoliches but that unauthorized ones are at risk of being hunted down and destroyed. That made me wonder about Mazyralyx. As a dracolich aligned with Katashka, I imagine he would be an enemy to Argonnessen. But, obviously, he's still around. Are the Eyes of Chronepsis allowing him to live for a specific reason or have they simply not been able to kill him yet, and are waiting for an opportunity?

Sergei Lakissov

I'm starting a campaign where a kalashtar PC is a former detective now on the run from Dreaming Dark agents. Thinking of this, I realized that Dreaming Dark isn't likely to attack every Kalashtar that isn't actively hiding that they're Kalashtar (otherwise, they would almost all be hiding, and most people wouldn't even know they exist). Aside from discovering some Dreaming Dark scheme, what might make a PC a target?

Exciting news about the new setting! I'm excited to follow the new worldbuilding developments and learn more. Eberron went through a long and collaborative development process. This differs from some other major campaign settings, and plenty of homebrew ones, which emerge as a result of play and can be more disjointed or kitchen sink-y. By contrast, Eberron is set at a specific evocative point in time, with core themes and plenty of potential fronts and places to explore. As you develop this new setting, what kind of process are you following? Eberron was developed, in part, to fill a unique niche while allowing classic fantasy tropes to all have a place. What are the design goals of this new setting? If this isn't a work in progress or private at the moment, what do you think some of the themes or inspirations might be?

Chase Landrey

Hi Keith, I'm excited to hear more about your upcoming new Daggerheart setting. I had a small question about the Mourning. I'm DMing a sort of prelude session for my players that will take place on the border of Cyre during the Mourning. As the dead-gray mist rolls in, what are some of the things that they would see happen or conditions they might struggle against? Does the mist itself bring any particular negative effects? I'm already planning on having some their magic that they cast become living spells. If this is already covered in any other book or blog article, I'm happy to go dive into that too. Thank you!

Seeing the edit about short questions only, so I’ll ask one and maybe throw some more in later, but… 1.) Been reading Mistborn Era 2 as of late, and while the original ‘question’ would probably been more a statement how it reminds me of Eberron, with the introduction of a new city setting in the third book… what’s your favorite city you haven’t touched on enough (in your estimation) in Eberron? 2.) Any details on the Dark Cabinet. Inspired by the Citadel deep dive, I know the Dark Cabinet is the Karnnathi equivalent to the Citadel or Aundair Royal Eyes, but that’s about it.
