Hi Everyone!

At the end of this week, I’m going to be visiting Japan for the first time—primarily Tokyo, but briefly visiting Osaka and Kyoto. If anyone has suggestions of things I should do or see, please let me know! Because this is a vacation, it’s going to delay the Question Thread and the initial House Ghallanda article in October, but we’ll cover everything by the end of the month.

Thanks for your support!

Tokyo - Akihabara Electric Town. Lots of anime, manga and video Games content. If that interests you. If not, any curry restaurant. Coco curry is a great chain.

Visit a ryokan with an onsen. One of the best cultural experiences I’ve had.

Day trip to Nara from Osaka!

Definitely do Nara as others suggested if you like animals, you gotta feed those bowing deer. Additionally, there is a great animal cafe in Osaka where you can feed a binturong among other creatures, great staff, great experience, animals seem well cared for - www.animeal.jp Prepare for the best food of your life, eat everywhere. Even the 7-11 for late night snacks, which is important because especially in Kyoto a lot of business close very early compared to America. Also while in Kyoto, temples and castles are a must-see, I don't have any specific recommendations but squeeze at least one or two big ones in. If you've got a decent sized group and like to sing I think renting a karaoke room is a blast, can be done in any city. Akihabara in Tokyo is nerd shopping heaven, do some googling to see what shops might hit your interests, for me it was almost overwhelming, we ended up only doing one building that had 9 floors of stores and by the time we finished I was gassed out and didn't go anywhere else in the area, so if I go back I'm coming up with a game plan. I don't super recommend themed cafes unfortunately, at least not the Capcom cafe in Osaka. Food was way overpriced and under-quality, it's the only disappointment I had the entire trip. Mileage can certainly vary and some friends went to a different cafe they had a really good experience with, but for me the non-branded cafes were so good I just couldn't justify another risk for my limited meals in the country. GAH! I'm so jealous, I think about Japan every day since leaving!

If it’s not too far afield, Koyasan Mountain and Okunoin cemetery seem to exist on the borders of the spirit world

Fushimi Inari is a beautiful shrine but very popular. I went there very early (~6am) and it was absolutely worth it to see such an iconic place empty.

Last time I was in Kyoto, I found this little restaurant called Hide a short walk from Kyoto station I enjoyed so much I broke my rule of going to a new place for dinner each night and went to twice. The menu is on the small side, basically just okonomiyaki and yakisoba but it was very nice. https://maps.app.goo.gl/vK1HymDURUWJdnyt8

Kyoto is all about the temples -- Kiyomizu-dera, Kinkaku-ji, and Fushimi-Inari are my top three -- but if you want something different, Arashiyama Monkey Park is off the beaten path and a lot of fun. In Osaka, Osaka-jo (the castle) is worth a visit. And if you're flush with cash, you could consider taking the shinkansen down to Kobe to get teppanyaki for dinner. (Literally the best meal I've ever had.) Have a great trip!

In Kyoto the Philosophers Walk along the canal is amazing - its a lovely walk with some lovely small shops and restaurants along the way - along the canal lined with cherry trees (out of season for the blossoms but still lovely) there are a number of temples etc to explore as well - its only about 2km but well worth it

There’s a community in Tokyo called Kichijoji that has a really strong college/artsy community. Lots of fun, unique stores, and a very nice park. If you have time in Tokyo I highly recommend a day trip to Nikko. There’s a direct train from Shinjuku station, and it’s got beautiful hiking, a lot of preserved architecture, and nikko toshogu is one of my favorite places to visit in the world. I also love walking around Yokohama, and they have great food there. The Ramen Museum is a wild experience. Kyoto I second Inari Taisha and Kinkakuji. Kinkakuji is a stunning example of an incredible blend of architecture and environment, especially if you’re there in the fall. Osaka is a huge food spot. Dotonburi is the most famous I think. Shinsekai has a fascinating history and a really cool blend of old osaka and new. It has a reputation for being a more dangerous neighborhood, but my impression when I was there was that’s mostly because you’re a little more likely to encounter people sleeping on the street. Still, best to be informed.
