Western Breland is an untamed land, a realm with untold opportunities... and unknown dangers. The Daughters of Sora Kell have laid claim to the land west of the Graywall mountains, and the city of Graywall marks the edge of their territory. But Graywall is a city of monsters, governed by a mind flayer and patrolled by trolls... Not a welcoming haven for Brelish settlers and opportunists. As Droaam grows stronger, Dragonmarked houses and Aurum oligarchs are considering western opportunities, but many don't trust Graywall and its governor. And so they are looking to the towns springing up on the Brelish side of the frontier... towns like Threshold.

Beginning in November, I'm going to run an online D&D campaign set in the town of Threshold. The characters and the story will be ongoing, but the players will change; before each session, I'll post a creative challenge to supporters, and the winners will get to play; once you've played you'll be ineligible to play again for the next four sessions, to ensure that we get a rotating cast. While only five people will get to participate in each session, I'll also be reaching out to supporters to help establish details about the characters and campaign, primarily through polls.

The support of my Patreon backers is what makes it possible for me to spend time on the articles on my website. For some time now, I've been thinking about ways to add value for supporters. I've considered exclusive content, and I have published a few Patreon-exclusive articles. But I dislike restricting material. Now, everyone who supports at the Threshold tier—which is $1/month above the current Inner Circle—gets a chance to play in the game and an opportunity to help shape the story. To be absolutely clear, there are going to be a limited number of seats and not every Threshold supporter will get to play. But everyone will have the opportunity to compete for a seat, and those who don't get a seat at the table will still have an opportunity to shape aspects of the story.

In addition to this, I'm adding a discord channel at this level. This will be a place to discuss the campaign itself, as well as the articles I post on my website. I'll drop in after I post new content, and I will have at least one scheduled AMA on the channel each month.

Now, this is an experiment. I've only run a handful of streamed games, and I expect this to be a learning experience. So the first four months are going to be a test period. Starting in November, I will run at least one game a month. I may run more than one session each month, but I don't yet know the technical challenges I may face, and there's a number of other things that could place unexpected demands on my time, so I'm only going to promise one session per month in this period. At the end of four months, I'll evaluate the experiment and settle on a format and schedule for the campaign moving forward. I may or may not release the games to the public during this trial period, but they'll certainly be available to supporters.

So in summary: I'm adding a $6/month tier to my Patreon. People who support at that level will have all the benefits of the Inner Circle—helping shape the content of the IFAQs and Dragonmark articles—but will also receive polls that will help shape the characters and story of the Threshold campaign. At least once each month, I will post a creative challenge for Threshold supporters, and the winners will play in the next session of the online campaign. In February 2021 I'll evaluate the project and make plans for the next phase.

If you have questions, ask below! Otherwise, I hope I'll see some of you in Threshold!

Will there be some kind of campaign diary or wiki for people to participate in? (There's a few tools like WorldAnvil or Kanka that are good for this)

This is amazing! I’m really looking forward to see how this turns out.

For virtual meeting, I've actually found that Zoom or Google Meet (or something else like that) work better than say, Discord, which can get clunky when the video function is enabled. Mapswise (should you choose to use those rather than theatre of the mind), Owlbear Rodeo is a pretty good free tool with basic combat map capabilities, and there's always Roll20, of course. And...well, I'm always a proponent of D&D Beyond, but I'm pretty sure just about everyone already knows about it. SUPER excited to see how this goes!

This is a great idea! Do you think there will be a "cooldown" period for people who are selected for the game, in order to facilitate a wider range of patrons? (i.e. once you've been selected, you need to wait x games before you'll be entered into the selection again?)

Matt Brady

I'm not sure how this will all go but I'm excited to see where it goes! Plus Droaam is one of my favourite topics for Eberron!

Signed up just for this chance. I've wanted a dragonmark tattoo for years and with everything put on hold those tattoo plans got put on hold as well. If I get chosen to play whatever character I do play will have a dragonmark and that will be my "official" tattoo

Sounds a excellent idea Keith! Would be cool if all members of the tier could watch in the time(live is the world maybe) the session. In this way, I feel that all would gain something even if never are the lucky ones.

Will there be limitations based on patrons' locations? This idea you've had makes me very excited but the fact that I'm in a very different timezone from US and that English is not my first language, it makes me a bit worried!

Sunev

This seems like a really wonderful idea. For the timezone issues, it might not be a bad idea to get a rough estimate of how many from that tier are in what timezones/availability for different times of day. That makes for easier match ups for when the games are run!

Oshe Pokémancer

This is an absolutely AMAZING idea! Can't wait to get in on this! Thanks for the continued love for your fans! You are and have been an awesome creator since I first encountered you in Eberron's debut!

Some thoughts that could be useful: -> I saw in discord some valid concerns with players unexpectedly doing thing...not so interesting in social terms. Do you know, we never know what can happens in a table. A good way of minimizing this is make very clear what is allowed and the principles of the game. -> About foreign concerns, I have the same issue before that Anth and take a long time to have courage to play in a English table. One good way of this work is encouraging non English native players that don’t have so much confidence in them English to play some character that for some reason is foreign too. It is very fun add this to roleplay. Some distant land or a character too old or from a very past time (you always can lost yourself in Thelanis) are good ways to do it. -> As this is more as a one shot for those that will play, maybe timezones concerning are more higher that it will really be. I feel that maybe choice the time that probably will happen in the four months (according what you can, but trying have different times) and let the selected that cannot in the time of one particular month say “oh, the time of month three is good to me, I will wait this one” and selected one more to complete the session of the currently month. Maybe this work better than try ajust every month with the persons. Anyway, just thoughts that come to my mind. Maybe help.

Question: What are the rules for character creation? What materials we allowed to use to create our characters, are we using adventure leagues rules where we use the core books + 1 and use point buy, and are there any worldbuilding restrictions like prohibitions on very exotic races or restrictions on potential organizations that our characters can be tied to like a Cyran Spy, a Dreaming Dark Agent, a member of the Emerald Claw, etc?

Hey Keith! I was wondering if you have considered doing short vlogs about RPG stuff for patreons (ie. your initial impressions on new WotC books and how you could fit official adventures into Eberron)? Like real stream of conciousness stuff - I think your perspective is very unique and insightful!

Mark O'Brien

Keith, make sure your game times are suitable for your fans across the world to participate, so not limiting to just those folks in North America. Mind you I’ll make it work what ever the time 😆

Miguel Valdespino

Will you be using 5th edition? Perhaps a poll to see if enough people want to use a different rules system?
