Greetings, Patrons!

In an ideal world, I would be able to answer everyone's questions every month. In THIS world, life continues to be hectic and it simply isn't possible. For those who are new to the IFAQ process, here's how it works.

Given the volume of questions I receive, I limit myself to answering one question per patron per month, to try to spread my time out as evenly as possible. You can ASK multiple questions, because it may be one is easier for me to answer than another—but if you ask seven questions, I'm only going to answer one of them.

If I can answer a question in 2-3 sentences, I will answer it here (as a reply to your comment). If I can answer a question in 2-3 paragraphs, it may be answered as an IFAQ article, but I only have time to post 1-3 IFAQs per month. If it would take me 2-3 pages to answer a question, odds are good I'm just not going to have time to take it on this month. So the tighter the focus of your question, the greater the chance I'll be able to answer it. In choosing topics for IFAQ articles, I look for questions that could interest a wide audience or be applicable to many campaigns.

If I would have to do significant research to answer a question,  it's probably going to get passed over. I wish I had the time to tackle complex questions, but with all my IRL issues I definitely don't this month. So I love questions like this—but the simple fact is that if I need to do an hour of research to properly answer a question, it's not going to happen this month.

If you asked a question didn't get answered in a previous month, you're always welcome to ask it again, though consider how these guidelines apply! There's always good questions I just don't have time to answer.

That's it. As always, thanks for your support!

Is there a quick and dirty hierarchy for Karrnath? I assume King (Kaius) > Warlords > Nobility? Mayors?

In terms of seer, who is more powerful Sora Teraza or Shan Tira, Lady of the Silver Tree, and how are they different from each other in divination powers.

Parker Wimberly

Are there more Feyspires than the ones mentioned? Are there ones in the seas of Eberron.

Who is Lady Dusk of the Crimson Covenant?

What is the difference in terms of magic advancement between the Dhakanni and the Dwarves of Sol Udar?

How does the Cazhaak Creed view the aberrant creations of the daelkyr, such as the illithid Xorchylic of Graywall? Are they considered children of the Shadow as much as any other aberration? In particular, medusas seem to assert that they are the spawn of the Shadow and not Orlassk, even when Exploring Eberron strongly suggests that medusas are a product of Orlassk.

RGMD

How would you go about making what happened to Metrol unrelated to the Mourning? Opportunistic dark powers saw their opportunity during the chaos and took it to Mabar?

Parker Wimberly

In your book "The Fading Dream" the Lady of the Silver Tree states "We are Lords and Ladies of the Faerie Court. Each among us holds dominion over a realm within perfect Thelanis, or consorts with the ruler of such a realm." On page 125 in reference to the gathered leaders of the Feyspires. My question is does that mean that some of the Feyspire rules are vassels or connected to other Archfey in the Anchor Baronies.

Hello! Was wondering where you'd put Nightmares in your Eberron? Some sources from 5e say that they were Pegasi that have had their wings taken from them.

Constantine

How do you differentiate Demons and Devils in your Eberron? Do you use them interchangeably, or are there different sources of them?

Paul Blank

If all of the strongest factions (like the Chamber, the Undying Court, the Dreaming Dark, the Daelkyr, the Lords of Dust, ect) fought for supremacy battle-royale-style, which one do you suppose would emerge victorious and why?

David Armstrong

Other than encountering monsters, what are the in-game effects of entering the Mourning? I know it's a writhing wall of horrified screaming faces etched into a stable wall of fog, but once inside, what are the effects of being in the Mourning? Can PCs breathe? Is there any continual magical effect? Can they even see?

Rodrigo Kuerten

Since "barbarian" and "monk" are terms that have a meaning besides being a class, how would you rename the classes? Especially barbarian, which carries a somewhat problematic meaning.

Joseph Meehan

Two life cycle questions, since different editions have had different truths. What's the life cycle of Medusas in your Eberron? What's the life cycle of Gorgons in your Eberron?

Matt Brady

Question from my friend, do shulassakar have similar roles in their society/culture to the anathema (big hulking multiheaded divine figures) of yuan-ti culture? If so, would it have been more a "height of their power" manifestation during the time of Khalesh in Sarlona? Going deeper, what do the remaining shulassakar do for food? Are the snake-people (or sneeple) of Krezent engaging in agriculture? Hunting? Or is it like the Ghaash'kala and they're using Khyber or planar manifest zones for food?

Matt Brady

We know that education is mostly assured in the Five Nations, that nobility and the churches provide for the education of the common folk as well as their own children, though obviously not equally. Apprenticeship and vocational work, etc etc But are there examples of games children play around the Five Nations (or if there's not much variance, though I imagine there would be, perhaps further afield in places like Eldeen and the Shadow Marches)? Do non-shifter children participate in hrazhak, or is it considered too full contact? Have the cultures of the Five Nations been apart long enough (or were their divisions so pervasive as to affect children's games) for Aundairans to favour arcane tinged games, and Karrnath to develop a full-contact "Red Rover"? I can't imagine, of the games/sports/entertainment detailed in Sharn: City of Towers, that many children play Six Stones, except maybe as a variation of tag?

Thomas Brøgger

How do musicians in Eberron use magic in their performances?

dirDav3

How do you think the Draconic Prophecy was first discovered by dragons? If the prophecy is seen in anything, then the first dragon is essentially predicting the future by cloud watching/star gazing which sounds unlikely to be taken seriously. And what does the release of an overlord due to the Prophecy actually look like? Does it just spontaneously happen, or does it trigger some sort of cascade of events leading up to the release?

Federico Crivellin

Hello Keith! In 5e and in your Eberron, what manifestations/powers could have the Dragonmark of Death?

Lev Goldiner

Do Warforged Dream of Warforged sheep? I am beginning a campaign as Warforged Paladin Hexblade and I was wondering if dreaming is possible? I am planning to use as RP with the DM as communication between my character and my Hexblade

Spike Hemphill

Do Daelkyr and their servants hate or forbid the creation of undead aberations such alhoons, mind flayer lichs , and death tyrants?

Beoric

Both Forgotten Forge and Shadows of the Last War mention a Sivis message station in Barmin tower, but don't say what district it is in. A lot of the action is in (and below, per your previous responses) Callestan, but per S:CoT there is no message station in Callestan. There is a message station in the Bazaar, right above Callestan, and there is also one in Clifftop, so those are good candidates.

Sunev

What kinds of dances are popular in the Five Nations? I know the tago is called out for Cyre, but now I'm curious about the rest of Khorvaire.

Eric Smith

Where and how do you see whaling playing a part in Eberron?

Syltorian

1. It is mentioned somewhere that many cities in Khorvaire are in manifest zones, Sharn being only the most famous. Can you tell us whether the major capitals of the Five Nations and their predecessors are in such zones, and if so, in which? I am aware that specifics about their effects would take too long, but I'd be happy just with a simple indication. - Fairhaven and Thaliost - Flamekeep and Daskaran (I believe Irian has been mentioned for Flamekeep) - Metrol (before the Mourning, anyway) - Wroat - Korth 2. Are there any aquatic/underwater cultures in the Scions' Sound, such as merfolk? I'd generally be quite interested to hear how the Sound influences life and culture around it; the Seas have received some discussion, but the Sound, in the centre of the Five Nations, has not, and I'm quite curious about it. That would be quite a long answer, though, so it might not be for this month or anytime soon. 3. Since the ECS, Thrane is noted as exporting 'fine crafts'. Yet overall, they are also presented as pragmatic and stoic, not to say spartan. What does their fine craft involve? Religious objects? Silverwork? 4. (probably too long): How do Faustian pacts work in Eberron, since nobody seems interested in mortal souls, or actual be able to sell theirs? There's the Keeper, but he might be a myth. 5. Where is the Demesne of Shape? Up until 4E, it was in Thaliost, being established there after the original demesne in Atur was taken over by Thuranni; Morgrave Miscellany has it in Wroat, and was moved there from Metrol, which had previously been the case for the Demesne of Shadow, which was reestablished in Sharn after the Mourning (page 14).

Did you ever think up rules, terminology, and/or a simple general description of how the game of Conqueror is played? For example: with how many boards and pieces is it played? How do you win? Is there a word to announce your victory, kinda like "checkmate"? Are there Khorvaire (or Karrnath) parallels to our chess champions?

Reighndragon

One of my PC’s starts as a changeling character with the fey of Thelanis (so not the changeling race). He's a human with red-gold hair and was interesting for the fey. His parents made a deal with the fey. He would be given to the fey for raising until he would be an adult, raised in Thelanis. A fey would take his place in the material plane to be raised by the character's original parents. If a PC would come to you with this background how would you incorporate this in the Eberron world. As the campaign is set in Aundair, close ties to the fey are more common. What kind of fey would take such a deal, and what kind of fey would be logical to take his place in Eberron?

Lev Goldiner

Ty. Reading Shattered Land now. Just started. City of Towers was great.

Patrick Thompson

What military ranks do the elves of Aerenal adhere to? I know the leader of the Death Guard goes by High Warden, but are there any other titles and ranks of note within the different military factions?

Zed Bundershot

Are there ideas or details about Eberron that you did not generate, but once you learned of them, they were happily incorporated?

Joseph Meehan

What's the reasoning/meaning behind the various planar symbols? Dolurrh is the octogram of the Host, and Kythri has changed a few times.

Carter Sprogis

Is there anywhere on continental Khorvaire that remains snow-covered most of the year? From what I've read, the snowy lands of Eberron include the Frostfell, Everice, the Tashana Tundra, and some of the northern islands of the Lhazaar coast. In addition, the northern parts of continental Khorvaire (northern Karrnath, etc) are also mentioned as experiencing winter for at least part of the year. But is that a long winter in a 2-season year, like Alaska and northern Canada, or a strong-but-short winter in a 4-season year, like the Upper Midwest? Ultimately my question is this: if one wanted to run a campaign or series of sessions in a snow-covered land that is still somewhat connected to the rest of the infrastructure of Khorvaire (as opposed to the isolation of the snowy lands I mentioned above), which places would make good candidates?

OHeyItsRick

Don't know whether or not this has been covered previously, but what actually happened *on* The Day of Mourning? Obviously Cyre was wiped out, but how did the rest of Khorvaire discover what happened? What was the response? etc.

Clio M

If it's not too late to throw my hat in the ring for a question, I have one for you! Rising suggests that Luca Syara, the famed playwright, could be an archfey bound to mortal form—which I believe is consistent with her portrayal in Sharn: City of Towers. Most NPCs with big secrets like that tend to have a more clear possible role to play, but Syara is particularly enigmatic. How do you envision that a DM could use her in a campaign? And as an embedded question, would it be possible for her to be a patron for an Archfey Warlock?

Daniel Tompkins

If an adventure is going to involve the party going into Dal Quor, how would you handle a Kalashtar party member?

Skylar Dash

The approaching climax of my campaign is a confrontation with the female Sul Khatesh influenced Stone Giant Artificer who was the Greatest Living Artificer of Xen'Drik during the early-mid Dreamwar and was imprisoned/sequestered between roughly mid-Dreamwar and 17 Eyre 994 YK. Lore/Flavorwise rather than game mechanicswise, does anything spring to mind for cool, flavorful and/or epic Abilities, Legendary Actions, Products of Artifice, etc. she might bring to a climactic confrontation?

Sarm

How would you make the Kech Draguus distinct from the Draelaes Tairn?

Dylan Lawson

What does the selection process entail when choosing a new pair of Sibling Kings when the old ones die and join the Undying Court? Do they vote, or is there a new pair already lined up from Mendyrian?

Dominic

What sort of things could you see in Seaside? (Beside the sea)

Joseph Meehan

I significantly doubt this will get answered this busy month which is why I prioritized the Medusa/Gorgon question, but what are the significant families in each House?

Franz Janson

How does the water supply in Sharn work? Especially in the upper floors and wards or especially in Skyway? Is it a rather mechanical solution oder - as you would suppose in Eberron - a magical one? And how is it done?

Joana

Hopefully it's not too late to ask, but is there anything going on in the barren sea beyond well... A lack of anything really? What would that be?

Theodore Kramer

What does a magical education in Khorvaire look like, especially at Morgrave University? Do students enroll for a standard period of time (3 years? 4? 7?) or is it more of an individual study plan, on a student by student basis? Would we expect a core curriculum ("introductory theory of magic", "intermediate spell scribing", etc) mixed with electives, or are students put on more specialized education tracks (if they want to become an alchemist, or conjurer, or archaeologist/tomb raider?) Are these structures pretty standard across Khorvaire (Arcanix, Korranburg), or are there major cultural differences in how the nations approach the very concept of magical education? Lastly, does Flamewind play much of a role in the University? Does she interact with students occasionally (routinely?), or does she mostly keep to herself, preferring to be undisturbed? Would she take interest in a student of rare or unique talent, in the interest of timeline preservation (or achieving her mysterious goals)?

Jason Godesky

Have you ever filled in any of the backstory behind some of the names hinted at in Sharn's districts, or is that an area left intentionally blank for GM's to fill in? We've heard about Malleon the Reaver, but who's Tavick? Who's Dalan, and why was he so in need of a refuge? Do we know anything about Dava, Cassan, or Vallia? If Tavick's Landing has a Little Barrington, then where's Barrington?

Robert

Hey Keith is there a group of magewrights and artificers that keep the towers in Sharn floating? Or do they just stay afloat once created? If they do exist what kind of influence do they have in the city? Are they unionized?

Lev Goldiner

Can Warforged get the Mark of Making? I know they can get aberrant dragonmarks but is it possible due the Mourning or some other means a Warforged Artificer gets the Mark of Making and it functions as with Human. It’s possible that the Cannith Heir Died in the Mourning and the Warforged he created absorbed the Mark and was able to escape the devastation. Ty.

Not Mordakhesh

Hi, Keith. Just joined today! My campaign involves artifacts that the giants used against the Quori in the ancient Dream War. Could you tell me a bit more about the uses the Cul'sir actually had for Dal Quor? It's easy to imagine the sheer raw destructive energy harnessed from Fernia by the Sulat League, but what were some special ways the Cul'sir used Dal Quor? I'm trying to create a way for the Dream War to make both sides seem sympathetic.
