August is over! I've just posted an IFAQ with a few of the questions people asked last month that didn't become articles, and now it's time for a new round of questions. In an ideal world, I would be able to answer everyone's questions every month. In THIS world, this simply isn't possible, but I like to do what I can. For those who are new to the IFAQ process, here's how it works.

Given the volume of questions I receive, I limit myself to answering one question per patron per month, to try to spread my time out as evenly as possible. You can ASK multiple questions, because it may be one is easier for me to answer than another—but if you ask seven questions, I'm only going to answer one of them.

If I can answer a question in 2-3 sentences, I will answer it here (as a reply to your comment). If I can answer a question in 2-3 paragraphs, it may be answered as an IFAQ article, but I only have time to post 1-3 IFAQs per month. If it would take me 2-3 pages to answer a question, odds are good I'm just not going to have time to take it on this month. So the tighter the focus of your question, the greater the chance I'll be able to answer it. In choosing topics for IFAQ articles, I look for questions that could interest a wide audience or be applicable to many campaigns.

If I would have to do significant research to answer a question,  it's probably going to get passed over. I wish I had the time to tackle complex questions, but with all my IRL issues I definitely don't this month. So I love questions like this—but the simple fact is that if I need to do an hour of research to properly answer a question, it's not going to happen this month.

If you asked a question didn't get answered in a previous month, you're always welcome to ask it again, though consider how these guidelines apply! There's always good questions I just don't have time to answer.

That's it. As always, thanks for your support!

IFAQ: August Lightning Round!

As time permits, I like to answer interesting questions posed by my Patreon supporters. Sometimes these are weighty topics-like whaling or medusa reproduction-that require a full article. Others I just answer directly on Patreon. Here's a few of those short answers from last month! Nope!

Hey Keith, my question is regarding several different lifespans in Eberron. As they are mortal, what is the Kanon lifespan of: dragons, elves, dwarves, and typical inspired?

House Sivis Echoer Station

We will once again be asking about nightmares in your Eberron. Pegasus that got trapped in DalQuor? Vadalis experiment? How, if at all, are they connected to night hags?

House Sivis Echoer Station

Another question, in case Nightmares are too heavy. Would Dragonmark House members be able to enter the Race of the 8 winds, seeing as the prize is a parcel of land, and house members cannot own parcels of land?

Max Lichtenstein

Do you have a favorite pirate prince or fleet in Lhazaar?

Spike Hemphill

You mentioned in Manifest Zone podcast that you like write more about the Demon Wastes. Are one or two places(or demiplanes) in the Wastes you like to spotlight?

C.K.

Night Hags! Just Night Hags!

Joseph Meehan

What are some of the most prominent families within each dragonmarked house?

Teettan

In our world, some fairy tales heroes deal with/encounter undead: Ghosts, wraiths, skeletons, headless horsemen, etc. On the material plane, the hero would encounter them in manifest zones to Dolurrh or Mabar, but how would that story be told in Thelanis? Are there any fey in Thelanis that have to do with undead or necromancy?

Sweetboy Jenkins

Of the warlords in Droaam. The troll known as Profft, the lord of bones is mentioned briefly a few times. Would Profft be a dire troll?

Jarrod Taylor

What (more) can you tell us about Queen Ertigani? She is a fascinating character and an IFAQ about her would be amazing.

Joseph Meehan

What's going on with Gargoyles? (a la the Medusa article). I know you've talked a bit on the discord about them, but a post would be nice, especially how wingwyrds ended up part of the CotSF.

With wild zones being prevalent in Sarlona, are planetouched any more common throughout the continent compared to Khorvaire?

TheMartyr781

Xu'sasar dines with the Queen of Dusk and Shadows during the Dreaming Dark series. Shira informs Pierce that everything that they are eating is illusioned and is actually gruel, the text explains what everyone believes themselves to be eating except Xu'sasar. What did she see as her meal?

Samantha Flynn

How does the beholder method of reproduction in Eberron work, with beholders being creatures connected to Xoriat and dreams happening in Dal Quor?

Jamie Bernstein

Beyond each other, what do the Carrion Tribes of the Demon Wastes eat to survive? By extension, do they make use of Shadow Demiplanes for resources in the same way as the Ghaash'kala?

Clio M

I figure I'll just repeat last month's question, as was suggested! Luca Syara is a particularly enigmatic character with some fascinating secrets, but she seems to have the least clear possible role in a campaign—at least when compared to characters with big open secrets like Kaius III. How do you envision that a DM could use her in a campaign?

Sierra

Given how different the Silver Flame is compared to many faiths, how do the faithful go about celebrating Silvertide?

Matt Brady

Do shulassakar have similar roles in their society/culture to the anathema (big hulking multiheaded divine figures) of yuan-ti culture? If so, would it have been more a "height of their power" manifestation during the time of Khalesh in Sarlona? Going deeper, what do the remaining shulassakar do for food? Are the snake-people (or sneeple) of Krezent engaging in agriculture? Hunting? Or is it like the Ghaash'kala and they're using Khyber or planar manifest zones for food?

Will Buck

Who is Lady Dusk of the Crimson Covenant?

Eric Smith

If you were going to run Rime of the Frostmaiden, where would you put it and what would you make Auril?

Hi Keith, I have 2 questions for you. (I'm more interested in question 2 but 1 is probably quicker to answer) 1) Is the intention of daelkyr as villains just a carnal force that needs to be dealt with? Them being beyond mortal comprehension inherently means your players can't really interact with them. How do you make that villain more interesting in ways beyond pure spectacle (flesh warping carnage, etc)? 2) If i wanted to write a campaign paralleling The Witcher 3, which elements of Eberron do you think are best suited for that story? Interplanar dwarves from Risia working for their giant masters, or Il'Ara, to bring the Killing Cold across the material plane? Or the main conflict being about the imminent release of Dral Khatuur? In two of your articles ("lycanthropes" & "dragonmarks-51016-planes-druids-and-faith") you reference Dral Khatuur being the Killing Cold, but I don't know how that works with the overlords not being directly connected to the various planes, as you've stated other times (article "eberron-flashback-the-lords-of-dust").

3.5 Secrets of Sarlona says: “The lords of the Dreaming Dark believe that control of Eberron might allow them to control the destiny of Dal Quor. Opinions differ as to how this can be accomplished. The dominant belief is that two steps are required. The first is to realign Dal Quor with Eberron, repairing the damage done at the end of the Age of Giants.” What does this actually mean in practical terms? How is realigning Dal Quor with Eberron supposed to help? Does the time scale difference between Eberron and Dal Quor flatten out as Eberron and Dal Quor align, thus slowly whittling away the Dreaming Dark’s time scale advantage?

Hi Keith! Continuing on my education in Eberron wagon, how do you imagine the curriculum at Arcanix to be? Are courses tied to specific schools of magic ("I have Enchantment class in the afternoon") or thematic spells ("I'm working on my paper for Charms class")? Is the goal of classes specifically to teach how to cast spells in a practical manner, in which case I'd imagine most courses don't go beyond the Third Circle, or are there classes in which the theory of higher level magic is studied even if the spell can't be cast by the students (for example, a class on the theory behind scrying even if the base Scrying spell is 5th level)? Accompanying this, I'm curious if there's a presence by Wizard Circles in Arcanix similar to companies at universities trying to recruit talent near graduation.

Patrick Malloy

I really like those examples for the sphere of influence of a released overlord. What would it look like for the Wild Heart?

SirApetus

How would you personally condense the timeline of Eberron, I recall seeing a post of yours about you wishing it it was over a smaller timeframe. I personally have done it in my Eberron, but just curious how you would go about doing it and what ranges for each era, etc.

Mike Mateer

You’ve said before that the Last War wouldn’t start again unless people discovered the cause of the Mourning, for fear it would repeat. What is your advice for running a game where the plot threatens a restart of the war, but the cause of the Mourning isn’t the focus of the campaign? (It seems a shame just to pick a random cause and toss it in the Sharn papers or something..,)

Thomas Brøgger

How does the magic tattoos from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything fit into Eberron?

Peter S.

Recently there was a question about public education. Expanding in that: what level of public services, free or subsidized, can we expect in the five nations (or Breland if we need to narrow it down)?

Federico Crivellin

Hello Keith! Here my question: what type of beasts PCs could see if they jump in a House Vadalis ranch in the Eldeen Reaches? Can PCs ask for rent some Vadalis beast to travel faster into the Towering Wood?

What are the limits of Kech Draal engineering? Dhakaani magic is focused on bardic disciplines and artifice is focused on arms and armor. We know they have fallout style vaults that can self sustain for millenia. But does their artifice extend to civil engineering? For example, I've been toying with Dhakaani having sank shafts two miles deep into a hot aquifer to pump boiling water into a Risian zone. While not necessarily common practice, is that within their capabilities?

John Barleycorn

Hi Keith! I plan draconic prophesy to play important role in my campaign l, and I already know one sphinx that will probably deliver it, but I have a hard time formulating it, my group is pretty diverse, some goblinoids, some dragonmarked heirs, some aberrants. And I'm not sure how to get all them to play some role In that. I wonder if I'm just supposed to figure out all those if-then statements and then work down from them to give them some vagueness and poetic form? I guess my question is, how to figure text of the prophesy if you already more or less know what factions/villains/conflicts will be involved. Thanks!

David Byrd

Hi Keith, why didn’t the kingdom of Galifar or the Dhakaani even mobilize any armies and try and clear out the Demon waste ? Seems like a a few expeditions into the waste would raise legitimate concern about this demon filled wasteland sitting above them. I’m not saying it would be easy or even possible but do you think there were any attempts?

Not Mordakhesh

Alrighty. My question is about Couatls and how much they have been lost to history. The Couatls all supposedly sacrificed themselves and ended the Age of Demons by sealing away the Overlords. That was 100,000 years ago. And also 700 years ago one Couatl seemed to be involved somewhat with Tira Miron. But how much was known about that Couatl's involvement with Tira? I'm a little confused by that because the Silver Flame Church in Stormreach is considered heretical due to how much importance it gives to Couatls. Would a regular mainstream Silver Flame paladin know what a Couatl is, and know that Tira Miron met one? (Also, lore wise, did that Couatl sacrifice itself too along with her?) And also in general, how much is known about Couatls out and about in the world? I know in one of James Wyatt's books one is seen flying over the Menechtarun desert. If Couatls could occasionally be glimpsed in small numbers like that, what do they spend their time doing? They aren't working with the Dragons of Argonessen. Is it perhaps that one live Couatl keeps watch over a Silver Flame prison? 2 Couatls to 1 Overlord? I've given one of my players a piece of Draconic Prophecy that ends with "the feathered cousins shall be lost no more." and I'm strongly hinting that Couatls will be found somehow and that my player can use that Couatl to purify Rhashaak. But found where, and doing what? This is a hole I've written myself into, but I could get myself out if I had a bit more clarification. Cheers.

Do elemental galleons suffer the same effects of exhaustion as elemental airships do? Or are they able to keep on trucking for much longer or maybe even indefinitely?

Earth Seraph Edna

Who is the "imprisoned force of filth and pestilence" that the Plaguebearers of the Carrion Tribes, such as Fulgrun Bloodboil, actually worship? They are mentioned in page 160 of the 3.5 Eberron Campaign Setting and in page 120 of the 4e Eberron Campaign Guide, and no more than that.

Syltorian

Hi Keith, an answer to either of these would me greatly appreciated? Thanks as always for these Q& A! 1. Many cities are built in manifest zones. The most famous is obviously Sharn, but what about the other major cities and capitals of the Five Nations and of their predecessors? Specifically: Flamekeep (I believe Irian was mentioned?), and Daskaran (and, ideally, Sigilstar); Metrol (pre-Mourning); Fairhaven and Thaliost; Wroat. 2. Thrane, usually presented as stoic and even spartan, is also an exporter of ‘fine arts’ according to the sources since the ECS. While I can see the Thranes as being perfectionists and dedicated to certain arts related to their faith (silversmithing, holy symbols and statuettes, lanterns and candlesticks, …), what do you reckon the nation produces that counts as fine arts and crafts?

MQ Bernstein

IYE, how does the Raven queen/Queen of the dead interact with the Undying Court? They're immortal intelligent undead whose souls don't come back to her...but they're also using the positive energy plane...just kind of want to know if that adds a wrinkle.

Erik Arnason

Hey Keith, One of the facets of Eberron I've grown to love is how the mechanics of game elements such as creatures and spells inform the development of culture and technology. Through this lens, how do you envision the physical environments of the Dragons. I am curious how their architecture and use of technology would be impacted by the use of flight, advanced spell casting, shapeshifting etc. If high level PCs made a sojourn to Argonessen and were granted audience with the dragons there, how would you describe this alien world? I scanned through Dragons of Eberron and found references to use of forges and industry throughout the dragon clans there, as well as descriptions of Io'Lokari, but felt these paralleled a humanoid model too closely. What are your thoughts?

Ben

What sort of things would Undying Councilors and Ascendant Councilors get up to on the Astral Plane while using the astral projection spell?

SirApetus

Should be a simple question, but when you refer to City Goblins, are they only Goblins, or are they Bugbears and Hobgoblins too?

SirApetus

I know you said one question per patron, so I will ask this one, so I have it for reference for next time too. What would happen to a Rakshasa that became good? A angel can fall, but is still a celestial. Would a good Rakshasa still be a fiend? Obviously not an usual occurrence since outer planar creatures tend to be a lot more strict to their nature, but I do like the idea that some can get out of it.

Joana

How do the archfey see themselves inside their stories in Thelanis? do they see themselves as actress inside their own stories, or do they really believe in what's going on in there? If they really believe, do they forget about their feyspires and life outside of a story?

Earth Seraph Edna

You have previously covered the methods that the Lords of Dust use to exert control over Khorvaire. What are the methods that the Chamber uses, conversely?

SirApetus

I am quite curious about the Astral Plane(or Astral Sea) and Ethereal Plane in Eberron. They just kind of seem to be there, and not anything special or anything. Astral Plane in DMG mentions it as realm of thought and dream, which Dal Quor seems to take that place already. I just think it would be interesting to hear what you have to say about them and put that unique Eberron twist on them! It just seems to me they seem almost pointless.

Inquisitor Thomas

A few related questions about Thelanis: 1. Do the stories told on the material plane of Eberron shape of Thelanis or Do the existing denizens of Thelanis subconsciously influence the storytellers of Eberron to align with the common themes and archetypes of Thelanis? 2. Assuming the people of Eberron shape Thelanis what sort of influence does it take to shape Thelanis? Like if Eberron had it's own version of the Golden Age of Detective Fiction or Westerns or Young Adult Dystopian novels would that result in the birth of a new Archfey or layer of Thelanis representing that concept?

WebbRosson

What do the Valaes Tairn do when they aren't fighting? Would there be a reason for a group of warriors to be in Sharn besides looking for an artifact of some kind?

Jamie Bernstein

With the Krakens being children of Khyber, do they have a Heart Demiplane of sorts, in the same vein as the First Night?
