Greetings, Patrons!

Life continues to be hectic. Some of the challenges I've been dealing with over the last six months are becoming more challenging... and February is a short month. I'll write a dragonmark article and run a session of Threshold, and answer as many questions as I can, but moreso than most months, I'm not going to be able to answer every question. So with the understanding that I'll do the best that I can...

Given the volume of questions I receive, I limit myself to answering one question per patron per month. You can ASK multiple questions, because it may be one is easier for me to answer than another—but if you ask seven questions, I'm only going to answer one of them.

If I can answer a question in 2-3 sentences, I will answer it here (as a reply to your comment). If I can answer a question in 2-3 paragraphs, it may be answered as an IFAQ article, but I only have time to post a few IFAQs per month. If it would take 2-3 pages to answer the question, that's a Dragonmark article, and I generally can only write one of those in a month. So in short, the longer and more complicated the question, the lower the chance that I'll have time to answer it.

If I would have to do significant research to answer a question, that increases its effective size. It may be that the question only takes a few sentences to answer—but if I'd have to do two hours of research and contemplation to answer it, it's going to get passed over.

As I call out above, I can't answer every question—this month especially. If you asked a question didn't get answered in a previous month, you're always welcome to ask it again, though consider how these guidelines apply! If your old question didn't get answered it may be that I just didn't get to it, or it may be that it requires research or a long answer.

I plan to write a Dragonmark article this month, and I'll post a topic poll later in the week. Current contents are The Devourer to finish up the Dark Six, The Ethereal Plane, and Quori Expanded. If you have a Dragonmark topic suggestion, you can comment here—just say "Article topic" or something like that.

As always, thanks for your support!

In Eberron one's nationality means more than their race. This is true for most but Kalashtar seem very insular compared to other races. Short of orphans how often to kalashtar fully integrate into the culture they're living and grown up in?

With Valentines day coming up, what holidays do you think are good analogies for this lovey-dovey day or are there only smaller regional holidays? What makes them different from the holiday we are familiar with?

(Repeat question) There hasn’t been much written about the city of Starilaskur, despite it being the third largest city in Breland. We know it holds the Martial Temple of Dol Arrah as well as an Order of the Broken Blade monastery, and we know there’s a large Cannith enclave there headed by a viceroy rumored to be a vampire (Haldon). But I believe that’s mostly all we know. Could you tell us a little more about it? Followup: Dylan Ramsey's "Crossroads of Destiny: Starilaskur" suggests the city is sitting on a manifest zone to Thelanis, specifically to the Assembly barony. Any thoughts on that? Alternative question: Who is the overlord of disease worshiped by the Plaguebearers? How is it distinct from Kyrzin? Also, some requested article topics: * Families within the dragonmarked houses * Bitter Sea * Sea of Rage

With some groups like elves and gnomes sailing the seas at the same time as Rhiavaar slaver ships, it would be interesting to know what impact or presence western Sarlona had on eastern Khorvaire. Would the Zil merchants have been surprised by human ships coming west? Having navigated around almost all of southern and eastern Khorvaire to trade with the Mror by this time, would they have chanced the crossing of the Sea of Rage (seems the Lhazaar Sea and most of the Principalities lie north of the Tashana Tundra)? Article topic: my usual desire to see articles on Adar or Syrkarn or the Tashana Tundra, of course

TLDR: why don’t elves dream? (I assume the meta-answer is “elf stats say they don’t dream, and so they don’t dream”, but narratively…) It’s called out that, not only is Eberron as a world shaped by the mixture of the planes, but also mortals themselves are shaped by the planes as well. Mortals feel the martial call of Shavarath, tempered by the tranquility of Syrania. Irian brings hope and Mabar seeds despair, and so on. Warforged, Kalashtar, and elves are all mortals that don’t connect to Dal Quor. The first two have some obvious story hooks as to why they don’t dream. But elves don’t seem to have as obvious a reason not to connect to Dal Quor. Could you share some reasons as to why elves might not connect to Dal Quor while still being affected by the 12 other planes?

I imagine that mind flayers would be very interested in the brains of people influenced by the quori, like the inspired or kalashtar. How would the process of ceromorphosis or enthralling affect a kalashtar or inspired diffferently than another humanoid?

Asking again about the Dreamspace in your Eberron! From a repeat of last time, the Dreamspace is this mysterious energy that certain people in Riedra can use to dream their own dreams. But what exactly is it and how would you use it?

I’ve always liked the Nagpa from MToF. It’s lore is closely tied to that of the Raven Queen and since she could be placed multible places (as you mention in your article about her) how do you se the nagpa fit into Eberron. It is mentioned that they are looters of fallen civilizations. Here Dhakaan, Cul’sir and Cyre comes to mind. It is also said that the nagpa could have played a part in the downfall of such civilizations. How could this be possible when it comes to Eberron?

MajorTotoro

Out of the big, classic types of Giants, Frost seem to have considerable less lore, mostly receiving odd references here and there but nothing big about them during the Age of Giants. Are there any ideas about them you havent been able to publish/flesh out?

TK-421

Have you ever used the Gray Rakes in a campaign? What can you tell us about them? Is there a link between the sacrificial Dhakaani platforms and the undead of the region? The altars sound like something they would have built after the war with the Daelkyr, if they are religious in nature. Why are the drowned so common here? Is there a relation to the Mabaran manifest zone around Shadowlock Keep? I'd love to hear any information you'd like to share about this region. Thanks.

Zed Bundershot

I may have missed a previous mention but, in your Eberron, what sort of identity would be worth changelings competing over? I plan to use the idea but; when one need only impersonate someone long enough to make that identity irrefutably guilty of any number of crimes, the potential complications are intimidating. Maybe a better question would be: if multiple changelings desire the same identity, what sort of changeling cultural guidelines might be used to keep things from escalating out of control? Yes, this question was inspired by that line from House of Gucci, "They fought over their own skins".

You gave the idea that Gem dragons could possibly come from Githeberron, if so, how would the dragons of Argonessen react if some of them wanted to come live in Argonessen? would they accept them as part of their society, would they be treated like a lower class, or they would be forbidden of entering like other mortal species?

Spike Hemphill

In your opinion what is more likely to exist a Quori that spreads confusion, Quori that inspires recklessness, or Quori that plants doubt and mistrust? Would any fit in portfolio of already existing Quori or all bad emotions for Quori to be based on?

Does Lluora Quori, that one saps motivation, have nickname like Eyebinder( Kalaraq) and black fury (Du'ulora )? ( I'm drawing fan art of Lluora so any info is appreciated)

Besides the Daelkyr, which faction would be the most likely to go back in time and change reality while the PCs were traveling in the Astral? - Or, as an article topic, "Thrane and the Wide Divine Magic Society"

How do you feel about the late comers of D&D 3.5 in Eberron? Namely Magic of Incarnum, Tome of Battle, and Tome of Magic (shadow magic, pacts with vestiges, and truenaming)?

Selerian

What with flumphs in Riedra and Adar? Are they pets? Or some kind of vermin?..

Earth Seraph Edna

Between the old 3.5 Dragonshards articles on Aerenal (which you wrote), 3.5 Magic of Eberron (which you did not write), and the 4e Eberron Campaign Guide (which you had some hand in writing), the lore on the life and deeds of Aeren (known as Aeren Kriaddal in 3.5 Magic of Eberron) are muddled in contradictory canon. What were Aeren's actual major contribution to the elven rebellion and exodus in Xen'drik? Did Aeren die from scurvy at sea, become the first deathless, or die in the process of casting some cataclysmic ritual? How could the elves have simply lost track of Aeren's ultimate fate?

Thomas Brøgger

Article topic: An article like the one you wrote about starting a campaign in Q’barra but with a different location in focus. It could be Shadow Marches, Talenta Plains or Eldeen Reaches.

Three questions so you can choose the one you feel it's more interesting, or easier to answer: What two or three pieces of tecnomagic/breakthrough do you think might be developed in the next decades/century in Khorvaire AND be interesting for players? (I am gamemastering a campaign where years have passed and we are at 1080 YK) Is there any context in which you think dragonmarked houses would try to take huge pieces of land for themselves /spark a second war of the mark? How would Erandi's Vol necromancy differ from late titan's necromancy - in terms of feel or background -? Ideas for articles: Armies and military beyond Khorvaire. What foul organised rivals and enemies can the players find in other continents to battle with or spy to?

Hi Mr. Baker. I was working on a Dinosaur centered campaign, but instead of using Halflings, I set it on an Isalnd (like Skull Island from King Kong), and I was wondering: What other roles do Dinosaurs play in Eberron besides being cool mounts for Haflings? Are there people who use Arcane Science to harness dinosaurs? I'm inspired also by Dinotopia, so you're take on Dinotopia in Eberron would be really cool to hear about.

C.K.

Origin of the Dwarves and/or an article on the Frostfell. I think the Dwarves are the one major playable race in Eberron that we know the least about when it comes to origin. Sure they had Sol Udar but where did they come from? Were they created in Risia and escaped to the Frostfell through a planar portal? Or did they gain their immunity to the Stillness of Risia by evolving in Risian manifest zones in the Frostfell and end up enslaved by Il'Ara? Is there a civilization still in the Frostfell?

Richard Flynn

In the Fear Reveals Truth adventures an overlord, Val Gultesh, Shaper of Nightmares is a key element. I'm wondering how this overlord relates to the quori and the Dreaming Dark?

Castier GM and Actor

What kind of ingredients go into making scrolls in eberron are there many techniques? And is the economy of eberron set to make magic items cheaper and faster? I still struggle on the worth of a +1 sword or a bag of holding depending on the world and am just curious.

How do Iredar Kobolds interact with their neighbours in Khorvaire? They're described as skilled miners so likely have surplus metal ore beyond their capacity to use within a community. Do they trade with their neighbours? How are they regarded?

John_Doe_142857

Greetings, Mr Baker. How would you use in Eberron the lineages presented in Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft?

Mike Mateer

Back to the Gith: In your world, how long have the Githyanki been hanging out in the Astral Plane: Since the beginning of the new gith-less Eberron, or did they join the new gith-less Eberron timeline in medias res? Follow-on, if they did escape directly to the Astral plane, how did they end up in a different version of Eberron? Or maybe they escaped *through* Xoriat somehow, going into Xoriat and then the Astral from Xoriat? Thinking it through, I guess the real question is: Is it just one Astral plane, which touches on all the possible incarnations of Eberron; or is it only Xoriat that touches on all incarnations of Eberron? If it is only Xoriat, wouldn't the gith have *had* to escape the destruction of their world through Xoriat, rather than just *yeeting* to the Astral directly? It would seem quite odd for there to be only one Astral Plane because either 1) PCs would be able to enter and exit to other incarnations of Eberron through the Astral (like they in theory could do through Xoriat, but much more accessibly, I'd think); OR 2) Incarnations of Eberron are sequential in the Astral, and the currently living Gith could have been peeking through color pools as the new incarnation of Eberron arose, like the children in the Narnia books watching Azlan work the high magic at the beginning of time.

A question concerning the history of Sharn: Approximately when did Skyway get built?

Joey Norwood

Another Sharn question: We know the Glass Tower fell in 918YK, but when was it built?

Syltorian

Does Shan Lian Doresh know about the previous Dream of the Age? The feyspire was cast into Dal Quor by Emperor Cul'sir tens of thousands of years before the quori of that age clashed with the giants, and the latter shattered Crya and triggered the reincarnation of the plane. What happened to the feyspire anyway, at the time? Did it remain benevolent until Dal Quor itself became a nightmare, and were its people reshaped in a manner similar to the quori?

Tyler Nelson

Serious question: Many people on the Discord discuss Giant Robot/Mecha Campaigns. I even ran one using the FATE rpg system. How would you handle Giant Mechas in Eberron from a lore perspective?

Caelan Scott

So I have a player who is a druid of the circle of the moon and he is part of a group of twelve druids that each represents a moon, with my player representing Olarune. Now my question is how can the druid PC remarkable amongst other druids, what can he as a PC do that these NPCs can't? This question ties into the articles on arcane science and how an NPC wizard might not be able to switch out their spells, in contrast to a PC's flexibility. But I'd like to know how this same logic applies to the world of druids and gleaners.

Rodrigo Kuerten

Hi Keith! So, what's the etymology behind Shulassakar?

John Barleycorn

I have an idea running a one-shot adventure where players play as Sovereigns. Will be using Godbound system probably. I know there is no definitive answer if sovereigns even exist (i plan to end adventure with young priest waking up from the wildest dream he had in a while) but what would be the time period and what conflict players may be trying to resolve in short adventure as Sovereigns/their demigod forms/chosen ones?

Inquisitor Thomas

How do worshippers of Kol Korran feel about the immeasurable market?

Are convenience magic items like cleansing stones new items or relatively established? And if they are new, are there limitations on them or do they work imperfectly (eg. not instantaneous, or cleansing stones that take more than one use on heavily soiled clothes or don't get out stubborn stains, or glitchy, temperamental or unreliable)?

Reighndragon

How do you imagine the military uniforms of the Five Nations looked like? Would they be the more colorful uniforms comparable to the 18th century or would the uniforms be more like the camouflage coloring of the end of the 19th century? What influence does the wide magic of Eberron have on the military outfits? How easy would it be to distinguish the standard military units of the different Nations?

1. How widely known about are the Cadaver Collectors? I'm assuming they were created by House Cannith, and in particular Cannith East due to Zorlan's ties to the Emerald Claw. They seem very war-crimey. Who did the Cadaver collectors have the right to harvest?

Not Mordakhesh

2. What's the lore behind Haggis the cat? There's obviously something deeper going on there.

If there was a socialist revolution across the nations in the main continent. Clearly (?) the revolutionaries would fight against the power of the dragonmarked houses. But which one of the known factions of Eberron would be a good option to kickstart socialism in Khorvaire?

Skylar Dash

What would the code of Galifar as implemented in Sharn have to say about someone who accidentally caused massive property damage and bodily harm as a result of ingesting contraband ("Full Flame" extra-potent Dragon's Blood)? This character is a capital f Fool, and the damage was as a result of ensuing magical incontinence rather than decisions made in an altered state of mind. She's the swamp boonies in Droaam and didn't understand what Dragon's Blood was when it was offered to her by a shady gnome (who, unrelated to my question, happens to be a disguised Rakshasi) at the ir'Tain gala.

River travel in Khorvaire? Is there an elemental steamboat? If so, is it piloted by an Orien or Lyrandar heir?

Andres Olan-Vazquez

Writing this here so I can remember it for the next call for questions! I'd love an article that delves deeper into the Arcane Congress. What it actually is, how it is structured, what its functions are, etc. Basically, in the Wizard Circles article you suggested the formal structure of the Arcane Congress would need to be the topic of a separate article; I'm going ahead and formally requesting that article.

Juan

Hope I'm not too late, since I just subscribed, but... Who gave Khorvaire its name? Is this a Dhakaani word, or even older than that, maybe even draconic?

Dylan Durrant

I've got an aberrant marked group, three players who are into this Draconic Prophesy business (Chamber vs. Court, Daughters of Sora Kell) and one who is full into the Dreaming Dark. I remember it being a thing that dragonmarks and eberron shards don't appear in Sarlona, that it's possibly invisible from the prophesy and I was struggling how to wrap this aspect into an otherwise Prophesy-heavy set of factions. Or, in short: how would you tie the Dreaming Dark into the Draconic Prophesy?
