Greetings, Patrons!

Later this month I want to do a few polls to reevaluate the type of content I'm producing, to make sure I'm using my time effectively and that patronage is worthwhile for all of you. However, for now we'll continue with the usual call for questions. Keep in mind that I often receive dozens of questions in a month, and try as I might, I will not be able to answer every question. To increase the odds of getting an answer, consider the guidelines below.

Given the volume of questions I receive, I limit myself to answering one question per patron per month. You can ASK multiple questions, because it may be one is easier for me to answer than another—but if you ask seven questions, I'm only going to answer one of them.

If I can answer a question in 2-3 sentences, I may answer it here (as a reply to your comment). If I can answer a question in 2-3 paragraphs, it may be answered as an IFAQ article, but I only have time to post a few IFAQs per month. If it would take 2-3 pages to answer the question, that's a Dragonmark article, and I generally can only write one of those in a month. So in short, the longer and more complicated the question, the lower the chance that I'll have time to answer it.

If I would have to do significant research to answer a question (whether that's studying a real-world historical movement or third-party D&D supplement) that increases its effective size; even if it will only take three sentences to answer the question, if I have to do three hours of research first, it's going to go to the bottom of the slush pile.

I'm more likely to spend time on a complex question if the topic seems like it will interest a significant number of people. So when you're looking through the thread, like questions you'd like to see answered!

If you asked a question in a previous month that didn't get an answer, you can always ask it again, but consider as to how these guidelines apply. I do my best, but time is always the enemy. As a side note: Questions don't have to be about Eberron! I'm happy to answer questions about Gloom, Phoenix: Dawn Command, world building, or anything else that I do.

As always, thanks for your support!

Khorvaire, Xen'Drik, and Argonnessen have all been listed as having dinosaurs to a greater or lesser quantity; have giant mammals found a place in your Ebberon? A megatherium or titanotherium is an easy Vadalis one-off, is there another way you might enjoy exploring the idea?

How might you accelerate becoming a Vestige?

According to Secrets of Sarlona: "Aventus is the common name for a land thought to be called “Aventuu’siana,” though debate ensues as to whether this name refers to the nation or its legendary sorcerer- kings. Aventus is known today primarily through an aquatic race of the Sea of Rage called the aventi. Thought to be the descendants of Aventus, aventi have an oral history that tells the story of a kingdom brought down by unnatural devastation, then swallowed by the sea. The Aventus Islands now carry the name of the kingdom that reportedly once stood there. Those isles belonged to Khunan prior to that land’s destruction and rebirth as Syrkarn; now, they are counted as part of the Riedran province of Rhiavhaar." That's about as much as we get about Aventus and the aventi. What else is going on in the now submerged city of Aventus and its people, who have little love for the Inspired?

Once again leaving my question about the formal structure of the Arcane Congress here in hopes it inspires an IFAQ! For a potential question that's more easily answered here: It's been mentioned that Thrane is attempting to be somewhat more self-sufficient than other nations in relation to relying on the Dragonmarked Houses. What are some ways the theocracy has attempted to foster this self-sufficiency among the people of Thrane? Is it all at the community level or does it involve state level endeavors?

Why do the dragons hate necromancy, when they revere/respect the keeper in some kind of way and some aspire to become “Master of the Hoard” like them

Matt Brady

Do the Aereni (and/or Tairnadal as I imagine they are different here) have any notable dishes/drinks? Is the cuisine of Aerenal stagnant, or has it evolved since they came to the island? Are any notable ancestral spirits/spirit idols culinary revolutionaries?

I have a question this month! I'm not sure if you've answered this before, but I looked and couldn't find it, so my apologies if I'm repetitive. But I've been wondering, now that my players have hit level 10... in Keith Baker's Eberron, what happens when a cleric of the Blood of Vol uses their Divine Intervention? Do they intervene on their own behalf?

Alexander Eldritch

How common is the creation of humans via a creation forge? Are these individuals called anything specific? Is the practice well-known, or is it a secret?

Carter Sprogis

Not a question, but a request. Might be of you, Keith — as the center of the community — or it might a request of the community itself gathered here. Might already exist and I don't know about it; someone point me that direction if it does! I'd love a central hub (poll?) to see how everyone pronounces the many, many names that don't have obvious pronunciations. Like, literally just a stripped-down website where any name can be uploaded and everyone can submit their pronunciations or vote on ones others have submitted. I know you always stress that names can be pronounced however you want, and I also know that there are Kanon answers to most, but I'd love to see the variety. See if there are variations I hadn't thought of (believe it or not, when I started reading sourcebooks on my own, with no context from you or other fans, I NEVER considered pronouncing Cyre to rhyme with Siri).

In Aerenal the people are grouped in different likes with one noble house that leads them. How does this effect tracking of bloodlines? Do the Aerenal track bloodlines at all? I would assume they would because members of the undying court would be concerned with their descendent.

DivertedCircle

In an old Dragonshards article you discussed subraces for kobolds; iredar, irvhir and the mysterious irsvern. Do you do anything to mechanically differentiate the different groups in your games? For my own game I've given the irvhir and iredar distinct subraces each with 'spells' that they can cast via tool usage similar to artificers.

Were Eberron's (non-fey) centaurs ever integrated into Galifer/the Five Nations or were they another group pushed to Khorvaire's fringes as "monsters"?

If the Amaranthine City (Irian side) is all about constant expansion and discovery, then how has it not become mind-bogglingly large and all-knowing by this point in time? Conversely, how can the Amaranthine City (Mabar side) keep decaying without finally crumbling apart?

At what age do students typically begin studying at Arcanix, how long is the typical course of study there, and at the end of that period, is there a formal graduation ceremony at which degrees (akin to university degrees) are awarded?

1. Given how distant/possibly non existant the sovereigns are, how suitable is Arawai as a warlock patron? I have a fathomless warlock who is probably going to cast off the shackles of his evil Lurker patron. Is there some other nicer entity he can fall back on? Thats why I'm thinking Arawai. 2. If this question is best suited to Reddit, can I instead ask: How has the Turning of the Age affected Taer Lian Doresh and the Draconic Eidolon (assuming the latter predates it)?

Not Mordakhesh

3. Third question. Least Important. Given that Dal Quor is sealed away, can I use the spell Contact Other plane to communicate with a Quori while I am in the Prime Material plane, and vice versa? Can the Quori do the same thing back to us?

Juan

The dragonshards of Rak Tulkhesh are important and dangerous for Eberron itself, but what would happen if the dragons decided to hide them in other planes, maybe in the more chaotic ones? Would the essence of Rak Tulkhesh be left behind, as it is essentially a part of the Material Plane? Or would the dragonshards start influencing extraplanar entities?

Thomas Brøgger

In one of your dungeon magazine articles it is established that Zarash’ak has three major “wards”, the heart, the ring and the webs. Does the ring have any districts and how would they differ from each other?

Xavier Parra Pérez

What faerie stories or Fey - Inmortals or Archfey - might a dragon find in Thelanis that are different from the humanoid ones?

Only_Pugsley

1. Now that Droaam is becoming more connected to the outside world, have any of the standard monstrous population moved anywhere else in the world? Maybe a large exodus of goblins moved to Dar'guun or some Medusae built a new village in Aundair. 2. Now that Medusae have begun to leave Cazhaak Draal for various purposes, have eyeblinders become a commonplace part of their culture or are they only used in the east to make the squishier races feel at ease?

Not a lore question, today: What is the best way to help players who are not very familiar with the setting to build PCs who are well rooted in the world? Both ERftLW, and Exploring Eberron have suggestions on how particular pieces of the lore can impact PCs, but in your opinion, can we identify an 'Eberron character starting pack' to build fun PCs for a campaign? As a DM I would probably prefer every player to elaborate a bit what is the relationship of their PCs with the Last War.

How concrete are the appearances of the Sovereign Host — particularly at the local level. While canon has called out they have different appearances, is this a matter of everyone at one church holding a common image of Dol Arrah, or is it rather a more personal choice and imagining for each Vassal?

Ironchestnut .

Given the recent announcement that Paizo will be converting their Abomination Vault Adventure Path to 5th Edition, what in your opinion, would be the chances of being able to convert 5e material to Pathfinder 2nd Edition, with a particular focus on Eberron?

Luke Robinson

In honour of the recent International Transgender Day of Visbility, are there any canonical NPCs you would consider being trans and/or nonbinary? What about kanon NPCs?

Jarrod Taylor

Will ask a question I have asked before: What is the Lady Greykell ir'Ryc up to? Is there anything from her untold stories you can share?

Jason PB

Who are some famous figures from across the Eldeen Reaches (including the area before it was the Reaches)? We know a lot of big names in other countries and nations, and we've got the names of a large number of organizations in the Reaches, but were there any famous historic Archdruids, who made their mark on history? Any famous heroes or villains or organizers or leaders past or present that the players could point to and say hey, my character is inspired one way or another by this figure?

Kevin Macku

The name Marhya ir'Wynarn has been brought up a couple of times in a few different locations: she's mentioned most recently as the companion to Rose the Warforged in the Oargev's Suitors article, she's named as a potential hostile NPC in Dread Metrol, and she's mentioned by name in Dan Garrison's "Dancing the Tago" article. But if she's in any canon sources, I cannot locate her. Is there anything more you can tell us about this youngest daughter (or possibly granddaughter, again referring back to the Oargev's suitors article) of Queen Dannel? I'm not looking for anything mechanical here. I'll admit I'm selfishly looking for just some rounding out of a character whose name I keep seeing pop up coincidentally in new places.

Thomas Brøgger

There is a ruin called Lantern Tower in The Shadow Marches. What is special about this ruin and what could adventurers encounter there?

MajorTotoro

How would Gatekeeper druids and Dhakaani folk view Ruinbound Dwarves and symbiont items? How do you handle such opposite characters, in general, sharing a party?

Anthony J. Turco

Do you see the Voice of the Flame advising the Keeper of the Flame at the end of the Lycanthropic Purge to issue a public and formal apology to the shifters of the Eldeen Reaches? Or did the Church largely try to sweep their shortcomings during the Purge under the rug in favor of presenting a strong and "righteous" image?

Castier GM and Actor

Changing my question cuse I need just a bit more on it for a player of mine. Do we know more about the trusts relationship with the triumvirate. And if you are a trust member do you know other trust members or is it literally impossible to tell. Lastly can any race be a trust member? Possibly with limited access for non gnomes?

Jamie Bernstein

Any fiendish forces from the Wastes that bypass the Ghaash'kala will inevitably end up in the Reaches. Given that fiends and Carrion Tribes do sometimes break through, and the Ghaash'kala are 'too corrupted' to leave, is there an organisation in the Reaches that deals with such incursions? (or otherwise communicates with the Ghaash'kala on the matter?) Thanks!

Icaro

Any ideas on how to incorporate the Gothic Lineages of Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft into Eberron? I have a couple of ideas of my own (Dhampir being a result of some sort of experimentation at the tail end of the Last War, Reborn being some of Mordain’s personal projects), but I’m curious to see what you and others might have in mind. Thanks!

Tim Edwards

I've got a player with some quite severe phobias around parasites, mould and fungus. I'd like to run some Daelkyr horror without hitting any of those points - any suggestions, or is it best I just focus on the other setting villains for this campaign?

Micah Peltier

Obviously, I suspect an in-depth exploration of this topic to take a longer article, but I figured I’d ask it anyway. Underwater in Thunder Sea has been rather thoroughly developed, and to a certain degree, the Barren Sea has received a similar treatment. The waters beneath the Lhazaar Sea (and more what I’m going for by that is the waters surrounding and separating the various Principalities) has been relatively untouched. From various places, we can put together that the dominant race are merfolk, with scattered pockets of Sea Elves that field Aerenal with the rest, but that’s largely it. Do you have any ideas on some compelling underwater locations and cultures? I loved what you did with the Thunder Sea, but my group is pretty much staying in the Principalities, and I don’t want to just transplant a bunch of stuff from the Thunder Sea for an underwater arc. Thanks!

Inquisitor Thomas

Question: Why aren’t there notable advanced Giant communities outside Xen’drik? It seems (I could simply be wrong) like for the most part the curses placed by the Dragons were on the land itself and not the people, hence why Elves that escaped Xen’drik are able to form a fully functioning nation and outsiders that try to settle Xen’drik are afflicted by the curses. There are some giants in Khorvaire but primarily the most severely degenerated Hill Giants, why don’t the Storm and Cloud Giants who would seemingly have the easiest time reaching Khorvaire with their amphibious nature and flying magic simply not settle in Breland? Sharn’s Skyway seems perfectly homey for a Cloud Giant.

Inquisitor Thomas

Thanks Keith. Silly question: Can a vampire give a Warforged Vampirism? Do spells like animate dead work on Warforged?

Parker Wimberly

So I can see my first post so I’m going to post it again Proposed topic for a later article is your take on the moons as manifest zone worlds.

Inquisitor Thomas

Where would the Nagpa from Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foe fit into your Eberron?

WebbRosson

Is there any in universe explanation for why the Gatekeeper seal are so different from the bindings used by the Silver Flame, or why the Gatekeepers don't utilize the power of the Flame? I'd imagine that Vvaraak, being a dragon, would have known about the Silver Flame's power when she formed the Gatekeepers.

Morgaine Barkefors

Could you elaborate on the marinetime culture and traditions around Khorvaire? I'm planning an Firefly-style campaign ("Find a crew, find a job, keep f̶l̶y̶i̶n̶g̶ 𝘴𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨") and would love to know what your thoughts on Eberron's marinetime customs at sea!

Joseph Meehan

What were Thrane's pre-war borders? The ones in Forge of War don't make much sense.

OHeyItsRick

Hi, Keith! Perhaps a *slightly* random question, but I'm looking to portray a PC of mine as having an upper respiratory condition (specifically asthma), and I was wondering; what would your take be on pharmaceuticals in Eberron? Would people with these kinds of conditions be able to receive medication of some variety, or would it be largely treated through herbal or some other means? Reason I ask is - as I know you've compared Eberron I believe to 1920s era IRL - ephedrine was a common over the counter asthma remedy from the 1920s up 'til the early 2000s. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

If my Starilaskur question is a no-go this month, I'd like to ask a different question: The ECS states that Darguun's population is only 6% human. That seems crazy low to me? I know that when the Ghaal'dar invaded, many southern Cyre humans evacuated, and I know there were more goblinoids hiding in the fringes than anyone expected. But I'm having difficulty wrapping my head around the human population going from ~50% to 6% of the total. Do you have thoughts on the shape of Darguun demographics?

James Edward Johnson III

Why has the Greater Dragonmark of House Jorasco been of negligible importance in Galifar society? Dragonmarks are rare, and Greater Dragonmarks more so. But so are redheads with hazel eyes, but most people have at least seen one somewhere. The Five Nations have a population that approaches 10 million (and reaches beyond that if you include the Talenta, Zilargo, and the other new Nations), so even a rate of .0001% means there's 1 thousand Greater Dragonmarks out there; divided by 12 Houses means each should have a few score of such individuals at least. And those are quite conservative estimates. There are many canon and kanon circumstances where Raise Dead could have been incredibly useful in history. You've articulated why it wouldn't have been viable for Jarot, and frankly his paranoia being so great he wouldn't come back is delicious. And I won't bring up Boranex killing himself after his children died in battle, as it was from Five Nations. But what about *any* of the Paelion line? A Jorasco surely could have resolved that mystery with Speak with Dead or, more critically, Raise Dead. Surely if Thuranni mutilated all the bodies and kept them from people, it would have signaled their guilt; ditto if they simply captured/destroyed their souls to prevent such magic such as with Keeper's Fangs. And certainly Phiarlan would have sought to do such, unless they were conspiring with Thuranni; but even then, none of the other Houses or Nations bothered with these very-accessible (to a Monarch or House) magics? You often give great Prophecy ideas relating to Queen Aurala's death. Why doesn't she have some magic set in place like House Medani agents, that will transport her body to safety when she's slain, and then they Raise her? Surely if anyone can afford to hire a Greater Dragonmark on retainer, it is the Queen of Aundair. Even if a reason exists why it wasn't used before (such as that it is a new power their Mark has learned), why isn't it depended on by at least the people of highest importance in post-Galifar? I don't think the possible answer that NPCs have dramatically less ability to reliably benefit from it, as this makes the power's existence with the House sort of pointless if they cannot reliably market their greatest powers in some capacity except the PC Party in the Setting. Any insight would be appreciated. Perhaps I overlooked something, or perhaps this is an issue with simple oversight in design. I just need good reasoning to answer to my Players why Aurala's death at the hands of assassins is something they should worry about, instead of "She's a Queen, surely they can hire Jorasco to help!"

Paladin Dave

I'm not sure if you've answered this before, but what happens when two Manifest Zones happen at the same time at the same location?

AlDaFoSho

Can you expand some on the link between House Jorasco and the Borromar Clan? The head of their Sharn operation is married to the head of a thieve's guild. Does House leadership look the other way in the name of Halfling solidarity, or so they happily pursue alternate means of profit? Do Nosomatic Chirurgeons find cover working as Borromar assassins?

Simon

Copying a question seen in the article comments, "When it comes to other worlds Exploring Eberron says, “But the other rat is still out there—forgotten and lost, huddled in a corner, but still alive.” Without a connection to the planes there would obviously be a lack of manifest zones. I’m curious, what arcane, supernatural, and otherworldly phenomena would occur on world no longer progressing through the maze? What might be some of the defining features of such forgotten worlds?""

Inquisitor Thomas

Where do Gem Dragonborn fit into Eberron? If I recall correctly the Gem Dragons are tied with the version of Eberron that the Gith came from, so would the Gem Dragonborn live amongst the Githyanki and Githzerai?
