Greetings, Patrons!

I'm on my way back from GenCon, and I've just posted an IFAQ roundup of last month's questions. The last month was very challenging, and I've got a lot of catching up to do in the next few weeks. For Patreon, I'm going to be scheduling another live Q&A on the Discord, running the next Frontiers session, and posting another Quickstone preview. But I also will answer as many questions as I can! As always, I will not be able to answer every question; simple questions are the best questions. If I can answer a question in five minutes here, I'll probably answer it. If it would take significant research or an hour of work to answer a question, I probably can't. Feel free to ask questions that didn't get answered in a previous month, just know that I won't be able to get to them all... and if there's a question I've skipped over a few times it means that I need focus to answer it and I haven't had that focus. In addition, I will only answer one question per patron. You can ASK more than one, because one may be easier for me to answer than another, but I'll only answer one.

Thanks again for your patience and support!

Asking because I've reached a point in my campaign that needs answering. I've had Erandis Vol take over the undead in Karrnath made via the Odakyr rights. How involved would you see the Elves and Dragons becoming once Erandis begins her campaign and reveals herself? Would they set back and make ready to defend themselves, or do you see them as more wanting to finish what their ancestors started and finally kill off Vol? I'm on the fence on how easy I want to make it for my party to convince the Dragons /Aereni to help the people in Khorvaire.

Where did you get that stylish dragonmark pin/patch/etc.?

Inquisitor Thomas

So Bigsby’s is coming out soon I’ve been craving some more giant lore. I've been rereading Secret of Xen'drik but found some of the information on giant society outside of the big three modern giant factions to be kinda vague and generic with a lot of "They might be hostile to outsiders, but some might be willing trade." Can we get some ideas for other giant societies like one of those roll tables?

When you are worldbuilding, whether for Eberron or other works, how often do you start thinking about aspects that aren't "player facing" at all? Like say for example the tax code of Zilargo being incredibly complex and labyrinthine to give every Zil an opportunity to outwit the tax gnome? Are taxes in eberron primary paid in cash, kind, or labor and to what extent does location and/or nationality determine which?

Micah Peltier

Inspired by last month's "Near Future" article, what's a timeframe in the recent(ish) past that you'd find interesting to run a campaign in? Obviously we've had a fair amount of detail on the Silver Crusade, and how a campaign set then would be, and a bit on a Dhakaani-era game using PDC, but how 'bout during Galifar's history? Or perhaps a different age, like the Age of Giants or Monsters?

Jarrod Taylor

Do the Hat and Cornelius B. Cool symbionts get along or are they at war for control of their esteemed host?

Craig Barrett

Pretty simple one, I hope. Any plans to attend PAX Unplugged in December?

Zachary Butler

Were there any humanoids living on Arneal when the elves arrived? Do you see modern Arenal as being entirely elven, or are there spaces that other unique lineages might occupy (something akin to what was discussed for the Valraen Protectorate Locathah in Exploring Eberron)?

Will Buck

What's the heart demiplane of Eldrantulku like? I'm thinking of using the Oathbreaker as the big bad of a campaign. I recently discovered the infernal city of Offalion from FR/Greyhawk lore, kind of a simulated training ground for devils to master the art of intrigue, and thought it fit really well with Eldrantulku. Past questions: 1) Chivalric orders of the Five Nations. Also: when a person is appointed as a knight, do they have to join a knightly order? 2) Any thoughts or details about Starilaskur. 3) Additional information about Karrnath's Ministry of the Dead. 4) Additional information about the Nine Brothers of Night, or any other of the archfey of the Moonlit Vale. Thank you!

I believe there are some populations of shifters in sarlona, assuming that is canon lore. Is there any difference between sarlonan shifters and eldeen shifters?

Thomas Brøgger

I guess it’s quite obvious that there were manifest zone in Cyre. Did the The Mourning influence the cyrian manifest zones somehow?

Do people in Khorvaire drink coffee and if so who’s growing it?

Other than the pillar of everburning flame in Flamekeep, are there any other major/notable physical manifestations of the Silver Flame on Eberron? Maybe somewhere associated with the Kalok Shash? And/or exactly how blasphemous would it be to have an order of Silver Flame priests who sort of worship Tira Miron as an intercessor instead of (or in addition to) worshiping the Flame directly? Context for the question: I have a player who's interested in his 3e PC becoming a Sapphire Hierarch (the divine/meldshaping combo prestige class from Magic of Incarnum that worships a big ol' sapient ball of incarnum), but we don't like how Player's Guide to Eberron shoves the all incarnum stuff off to the far corners of the setting, so since his PC is a cleric of the Flame I was planning to adapt it into a "Silver Hierarch" class and associate them with a "Silver Eidolon" (a big ol' pillar of Silver Flame) instead. Problem is, it's kinda hard to keep them as a small and obscure order of warrior-priests if they're based out of the Cathedral of the Silver Flame, and using that pillar makes it feel like they're worshiping Tira Miron herself instead of the Flame—which could be great for flavor, but would be logistically difficult if it meant they'd be viewed as huge heretics by the mainline Church. I could always just reflavor away the part about the Silver Eidolon, but having a very tangible patron to point to in a world where most gods are distant and unknowable was part of what drew him to the class in the first place, so I'd like to avoid that if there's a good way to fit the Eidolon into the lore somehow.

Did natural beasts originate in Lamannia or on Eberron? And are they supposed to be evolving or sort of popping up from the platonic ideals of Totems on Lamannia?

Spike Hemphill

If Devourer of Dreams was defeated and "destroyed" but the age didn't turn how would Dreaming Dark handle the power vacuum? Would they wait until Devourer regenerates ? Or Would Karalaqs have fight over who would lead? Would Sharadhuna try to take over in Devourer absence? ( I am assuming adventurers defeated Devourer)

Hi Keith! my questions from last month. 1) The silver flame is the combined force of couatl soul energy, basically. Let's say Illmarrow helped do the Mourning. Her job was to produce an effect that kills everyone it touches by wrenching the soul free of the body. Let's then say she collected each and every soul killed by the mist in this manner. I'm at a loss for exactly what happens next. I know her 3 primary goals are to regain her mark, become the new queen of death over Dolurrh, and take vengeance on aeranal and the dragons. I don't have a specific question, I just... don't know where to go next with this hook but I think it's pretty good so far. 2) Would Chamber Dragons and Lords of Dust work together to stop other Lords of Dust? For example, working with Hektula to create the Day of Mourning to stop Rak Tulkhesh from breaking free? Or is that a line the dragons just wouldn't cross? I liked your take on the Mosaic Committee from June's question thread where you suggested the Committee could be how the two groups negotiate with each other. 3) If gnomes originated from Thelanis from Pylas Pyrial as called out in Chronicles, wouldn't they not dream either, like elves and warforged?

Will Buck

I thought of another question. Could a member of a dragonmarked house rise to the level of one of the seven Commanders of the Silver Flame templars? Like for example, is there anything stopping a d'Medani from becoming the Commander of Breland? (These commanders were mentioned in Player's Guide to Eberron but not expanded upon elsewhere to my knowledge.)

Beoric

Maybe not a question for here so much as for a longer article, but I would be curious about your experiences with the celebrity DMs at GenCon and nhow they run their games, particularly Luke Gygax.

JosieShenanigans

Apologies for dual component question that doesn't feel relevant but do you ever feel DM burnout and how would you surmount a crippling case of burnout?

Jamie Gardiner

Hi Keith! Sorry for your challenging month! I hope you are staying strong through your hardships! So I have a Kalashtar in my party and am wanting to do some dream stuff that began before they joined, what would be the best way to go about including them (in seperate dream stuff for the whole party), its more messages and images and an awakening for our Warlock than prophecy or influence stuff! Many thanks in advance!

Jarrod Taylor

When you wrote the Prince of Frost article for 4e's Court of Stars series, a lot of his story was rolled straight into Eberron lore with the Campaign Guide, and you've mentioned where you might place the Raven Queen, are there any other archfey (from the Court of Stars or other non-Eberron lore) that you use in your versions of Thelanis?

Eric Smith

I had several questions in mind but an interesting one occurred to me. Ancient Rome had temples and religions but the average person took his moral guidance from philosophers and there were competing schools. I realize that we have Aureon and the Silver Flame to guide some people but have you considered big "P" Philosophies? I had a character idea of someone who takes Ritual Caster - Cleric a bit later in his development and has Insight and picked up a book from a strange Dwarven philosopher that could become his Ritual Caster book. Probably starting with something like Detect Magic (nature of the universe) and Purify Food and Drink (inspired by the Dol Udar and fears of the same.) I kind of like various competing philosophy schools arguing against each other, possibly even drawing in the Path of Light.

It's been implied that thri-kreen were born with an innate connection to Dal Quor, explaining their supposed immunity to the Traveler's Curse. Would this connection make thri-kreen more susceptible to manipulation via the Dreaming Dark, or is it a similar situation to the kuo-toa where there's something they do (either intentionally or unintentionally) that is overall too dangerous and scary to the quori for them to even consider getting close? Or is it somewhere in between?

Tim Starks

How would you adapt the Moon/Robe-themed feats from Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen to Eberron?

Jessie Harris

Did Eberron have 364 days before Crya was destroyed?

Charley Meink

A question based on your article of incorporating Strixhaven into Eberron. How would you rename or rebrand the name of Strixhaven and the respective schools/universities to fall in line with your thoughts and views of Strixhaven being a school founded by the Dragons? I had the idea of renaming based off of using the different Dragon Deities, but that didn't seem right. And doing the same based off of The Sovereigns didn't feel right either. Any input is appreciated! Thanks Charley

Across all of fantasy worldbuilding, a common trope is the society that entirely shuns magic and hunts down any magic-users. This is antithetical to Eberron's wide magic premise, but there must be a place for the magic items, subclasses, adventures, and lore created in service of this trope. So my question is... What society, contemporary or historical, do you envision as having a fiercely anti-magic streak to the point of persecution?

Spike Hemphill

I don't know if you familiar with Baldur Gate 3 video game but it got me thinking. If there was new videogame in production about Eberron, what would you want the story to be about? Let's say you have complete control of product. What part of Eberron would you focus on? What would be the adventure hook?

Q1: What groups are likely allies in a republican coup or revolution in Breland? The Swords of Liberty are a given factions, but beyond that I'm not so sure. The aristocracy? Military branches? Houses? Since the Citadel is quite likely to oppose said revolt, they have to have a solid backing to stand a chance to "win". Q2: How do you imagine the Riedran fleet? Do they concentrate on small, quick vessels that patrol the coast, or do they assert naval supremacy with large warships? What kind of propulsion do they use? Are the ships used for diplomacy and trade the size of the Chinese treasure ships, quite similar to the Galifaran galleon, or something completely different? What kind of propulsion do they use? I'm super curious at your take as my group's crew is drawn ever closer to Riedran intrigues!

Marcus

Sorry if these questions are overly broad Keith (I am a creature of habit unfortunately), but do you have any suggestions for adventure hooks involving 'The Fallen Demesne'? *The best ideas I've had so far were simply to make the site incidental - the party has to find the off-switch in the tower to navigate past potentially lethal traps blocking off a short-cut for their journey that have been augmented by still lingering illusion magic - or for the site to be cleared of aberrations in preparation for a Phiarlan documentary crew.

How much of a presence do you think house Lyrandar has in Passage? On the one hand, it is a major city located on the shore of Lake Galifar, but on the other hand, I don't see Orien allowing Lyrandar to become too important in "their" city. My current thought is that water trade has historically been carried out by another small faction unaffiliated with Lyrandar, like the river elves mentioned in Five Nations. And of course, Lyrandar is now seeing Orien in a precarious situation, so they're trying to get their foot in the door.

If you kill a Radiant Idol on the Prime Material plane, where does it’s soul reform? Back in Syrania with their wings back and all sins forgiven? I’d really like to iron out these details because I want to use one of these creatures.

In the Moon Court of Thelanis, what could be some fun plot hooks between archfey that dive into the intrigues between the season factions?

Micah Peltier

Once an Aereni joins the Undying Court, is there ever a case of them being cast out and destroyed? During the bloody conflict surrounding the Mark of Death, were there any Vol deathless who supported their descendants, and were thusly "executed"?

Inquisitor Thomas

So where would the the Giant Demigods or “Scions” fit into Eberron? Would they they would super titans/empyreans that created the modern 6 (or maybe 8 at this point) Giant lineages, or something distinct?

Hi Keith, the 3rd edition Eberron Campaign Setting says that Morgrave University has a Wroat campus (pg. 148) - is there anything special or different about this campus when compared to the main one in Sharn?

GhostOwlGirl

How common or uncommon are magics that extend someone's lifespan in Eberron, like potions of longevity? There's NPCs like Haldren ir'Brassek that are supposedly human, but still healthy enough at at least 120ish years old that there would be people willing to serve under him if he broke out of prison, which makes me wonder how much those types of potions might play into politics. Or, a more joke question I still have to ask: What inspired the wild yet accurate rat in a maze with a crown metaphor to describe Xoriat and the Prime Material? It's crazy, but it works perfectly to illustrate it, which makes it even fitting for a section about the plane of madness, and I've got to know where it came from

DesnaPilled

This is something I’ve thought about, but in other settings, elves don’t consider elves to be adults until they’re around a century old due to the past lives thing. Is that the same in Eberron? Since reincarnation isn’t a thing for Eberron elves, is there anything that would keep that limitation in place? Or is an 18+ elf the same as an 18+ human?

What does the Unity do about elves in Rierdran, given they presumably don't dream?

Earth Seraph Edna

One concept I would like to introduce in my game is the idea that 1,500 years ago, a large population of Pyrineans fled the Sundering by traveling to Daanvi. They petitioned the pseudo-mechanical immortals for asylum, but they were also fascinated by the Infinite Library, and requested open access to it. After long and arduous negotiations, the Daanvian immortals agreed, but only under the condition that the Pyrineans would create a civilization on Nymm for 1,500 years and carry out whatever social experiments the Daanvians demanded. (Additionally, the moon naturally shares the Plane of Truth trait, so nobody can lie at all.) Is this a plausible scenario, and if so, what sort of social experiments would the Daanvians attempt on these mortals?

Jessie Harris

Where do you see the Helm of Teleportation in Khorvaire, a Rare magic item that can cast teleport up to 3 times per day? You’ve stated in the past that the most reliable teleportation in Khorvaire (in 5e) came from roaming Orien Heirs who use their once per day Teleportation Circle. I imagine Orien would want to use these helms for their reliability, but what are your thoughts?

Ben

Do you see the river elves culture of half-elves/Khoravar around Aundair and Thrane as having influenced or been the original source of House Lyrandar? I know Lyrandar first arose in Thrane. Five Nations first introduces the river elves group in Fairhaven of half-elves/Khoravar who still trade between Aundair and Thrane. In the “Exploring Valenar” articles by Chris Sims, he expands on this to say that the river elves are descended from Valenar elves who settled around Scions Sound and mingled with Sarlonan settlers. The River Elves now ply the waterways of the sound and the Aundair River.
