Greetings!

I’m back from GameHoleCon and slowly getting caught up. I just ran a new session of the Frontiers campaign, and that will be posted for Threshold patrons in about a week. I’ll be doing another live Q&A in a few weeks and hopefully I’ll get a few articles posted this month. But for now, let’s get to questions!

As always, I will not be able to answer every question; simple questions are the best questions. If I can answer a question in five minutes here, I'll probably answer it. If it would take significant research or an hour of work to answer a question, I probably can't. Feel free to ask questions that didn't get answered in a previous month, just know that I won't be able to get to them all... and if there's a question I've skipped over a few times it means that I need focus to answer it and I haven't had that focus. In addition, I will only answer one question per patron. You can ASK more than one, because one may be easier for me to answer than another, but I'll only answer one.

Thanks again for your support!

The 3.5 Dragonshard articles include one on the Seren Barbarians that was labeled Part 1 but which never had its sequel. Do you have notes on what part 2 would have included, and if not is there anything you feel part 1 left out or which you would otherwise want to add, modify, or clarify?

Hi Keith! Hope you are well! So I currently have my players doing some work for Cannith South, but their contact is actually working for Cannith West. I am looking for your insight and any ideas you (and your Patreon community!) have for adding intrigue and playing these off against each other (and possibly including Cannnith East!). And as a bonus any ideas for possible inventions/schema they could be looking for/could blow up in their faces (not in a mean way!).

For a cleric of the Divinity Within, how do you flavor spells/features which explicitly summon or contact external divine creatures? I’m thinking here of things like Summon Celestial, Divine Intervention, Planar Ally, or Commune? I have some of my own ideas but would love to hear your thoughts anyway.

How does arresting a dragonmarked (in this case, a very high-ranking dragonmark, such as a house patriarch or matriarch outright) work? Does the dragonmarked get tried by a nation, by Thronehold, by their house, or by the Twelve?

Thomas Brøgger

What’s your best DM tip for running a session in The Mournlands?

Jarrod Taylor

Who were the Six Kings? We know they weren't the only monarchs of the time but the ones that banded together to help Jhazaal's vision come true, but I am guessing that they weren't as tight-knit as the Partridge Family... even if that would give us a Dhakaani king named Keith.

James McAtamney

Re-asking from last month: Is there anything noteworthy about Passage that marks it as the home of House Orien (a prototype subway or tram system based on the lightning rail, say), beyond the extra-large lightning rail station? If not, any ideas for something cool or interesting that might make it stand out?

Rakoon1985

There are other relevant Halfling cultures beyond Talenta and urban? I do not mean things like Little Plains and Karrnath small towns. For example IME I invented the Kamanta, a tribe of sea faring Halfling in Lhazaar which live on a Leviathan and ride whales.

Zed Bundershot

Howdy Keith, hope the season is kind to you and yours. How about the Tower of the 12? What's the value that has kept it above Korth? Would other cities/states have incentives to lure a location change, like a sports team or corporate campus: fulfillment, research, collaboration/coordination, convention, public relations? What might it be doing that currently can only be done there.., gasp! Are they actively suppressing the Mark of Death?

Jeremy Redtree

You're a smuggler trying to make a name for yourself and become fabulously wealthy. Where and what are you smuggling?

Eric Smith

Tying somewhat to the Smuggler question, I wanted to ask about Dreamlilly. It comes from Sarlona but the Boromar Clan clearly maintains dens where you can take it a la opium dens. Do they have experts who have studied and tried to understand it? If so, what have they managed to figure out? What sorts of skills would such experts have?

Spike Hemphill

I have Mror Holds game where Githyanki invasion is happening. I have decided to make their leader Vlaakith. What changes could make to her character to better fit with Githberron? Why would she become a lich if she lives in the Astral Plane? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Zachary Butler

How do you imagine the sahuagin of the Eternal Dominion get around the Thunder Sea? Sea creatures? Magical submarines? Some kind of deep sea railroad?

I'd had this question for a while: how did battle in the Last War work? I mean that as in do battles in the last war (and eberron as a whole) look and function? Are they more like old medieval battle (formations with polearms and shields, calvary at the ready) or more like World War 1 (lots of trenches filled with people taking pot shots at each other) or both? if I asked a Brelish solider to tell me about a battle they were in how would they describe it?

craigrkennedy

I have a PC who is a first generation half elf, for some context the player is new to D&d and the setting, we've had a four or five sessions so far, haven't delved into their background much yet. Parents were a human sailor and a Bloodsail elf. They are a cleric of the blood of Vol (the human parents religion). I know that the Blood of Vol is essentially a bastardization/offshoot of the religion of the elves of Farlnen. And the elves tend to respect (humour?) seekers. But I'm not sure what sort of common beliefs or practices there are, if the elves actually respect the shared lineage or if it's more of 'oh isn't that cute, they think they're doing a proper religion'. Side note, the Divinity Within is as REAL as any other religion right, and something that's actually achievable? Even though it's an odd belief system that came to be from the (manipulated?) corruption of an earlier belief system?

Rakoon1985

Ok, I'm trying another question: 2600 years are not that much for Dragons so, there are dragons still living who maybe were in the conclave at the time of the Vol's Purge; There were some still living which voted no? (In My Eberreno there are and have recently builded their own net of philantropy)

Not Mordakhesh

This isn't a criticism, but I think the complicated nature of the overlords and their ties to the prophecy makes simpler stories harder. I need a nice simple story where the players have "Got to stop BBEG before he summons even bigger BBEG from TERRIBLE PLACE". The final battle is a showdown in the ritual place, and when they beat the badguy a much smaller and weaker version of the summoned entity appears to kill the players out of spite. I'm running the Red Hand of Doom, and in that the evil half-dragon warlord wants to open a portal to Avernus and allow Tiamats horde though. Upon defeating him, an angry aspect of Tiamat temporarily appears. I feel that with draconic prophecy you just can't have a story like that in Eberron about the Daughter of Khyber or any other overlord. Freeing and resealing them is a gradual process full of intrigue and webs of time. Can you see a way to replicate this story without breaking Eberron lore?

Hi, I'm reposting "IFAQ-level" questions from previous months, with the full understanding they're beyond the usual scope of the questions thread! I'm curious to learn about any of the following topics: 1) Chivalric orders of the Five Nations. 2) Any thoughts or details about Starilaskur. 3) Additional information about Karrnath's Ministry of the Dead. 4) Additional information about the Nine Brothers of Night, or any other of the archfey of the Moonlit Vale. And then, for a question that requires less research: I'll be running a game within the next couple of months in which the party will be chasing a band of brigands into King's Forest, and I'd like them to encounter a fiery dryad inside a Fernian manifest zone. The brigands have done something here (chopped down all the firepine?) that has thrown off the balance of nature, and now the energies of Fernia threaten to engulf the whole region in flames. Could you help me brainstorm ideas about what this dryad's fey "story" is, and some ways she might suggest that the party could help restore the balance? (There are no druids in the party.)

I’m running a campaign in Q’Barra centered around a growing mining town. What magic improvements could a town build to really bring in the “magic wide” side of Eberron? Stuff like speaking stones, cleansing stones, etc.

dirDav3

Hi Keith, hope you're well. 1) Lady Illmarrow's 3 primary goals are usually to regain her mark, become the new queen of death over Dolurrh, and take vengeance on aeranal and the dragons. What do you think she could do with a Silver Flame-like collection of a million humanoid souls? 2) What changes to the Mastermaker from Dread Metrol would you make if it were symbiont themed instead of construct themed? 3) What do you think could convince Mordain to become an ally, even temporarily? Daelkyr artifacts?

chuck finley

I'd like to hear your take on "advanced" pirate ships and weaponry. Ghost of Saltmarsh has ships with ballistas and catapults. Sea Princes might have some Siege Staves, but likely not many. The Blood Sails have undead kraken and their ghost sails, and the Lorghali throw rock elementals at people (from Chronicles). What about the Chaos Fleet? They're called out mostly for being fast, but they seem mostly like "undead elemental pirates" which wouldn't win naval battles alone. The 4e book said their numbers rival the seadragons, so they must be packing serious heat to defeat so many. Second question to choose between. A Soul Coin in d&d possesses a mortal soul bound after death and can be used in a few ways, or just traded around. Made in a factory in the 3rd layer of hell, they are featured prominently in the 5e campaign Descent into Avernus. Do you see the Lords of Dust using such a thing, either for commerce or power, etc? Personally i don't know if i see it, but "everything in d&d has a place in Eberron", so I'd like to hear your thoughts (discounting 4e's baator of course).

Earth Seraph Edna

How does the "Sanctuary at a Ghallanda Enclave" sidebar in the 4e Eberron Campaign Guide, p. 215, work with regards to Gold Dragon Inns? If a person is wanted by the Five Nations but friendly to the dragonmarked houses, can that person stay in a Gold Dragon Inn indefinitely, immune to being arrested or extradited?

Inquisitor Thomas

Amaranthine City Question: If Genghis Khan was an immortal spirit would he be a Irian Celestial or a Mabaran Yugoloth? The man began a huge empire, but he also ended several others.

For the Code of Kaius, it is mentioned that it is based off the Galifar code of Justice but with more extreme punishments and more specific and strict laws What could this code look like? What are some examples of how the two compare and how they differ? or if there are some laws specifically for Karrnath?

Daelkyr Devon

Bit of a goofy one. How might you envision Mabar interacting with Xoriat? Specifically, the Hinterlands stealing a chunk of Xoriat and "corrupting it". Could a Daelkyr escape Xoriat this way? Or would a Daelkyr consumed by Mabar turn into something new?

OHeyItsRick

Hello! So, as a little bit of a follow on from my question last month, I was wondering: are there any canon (or kanon) beings in Eberron you would associate with time/space? Whether deific or mortal. Also, this question in more for my fiancé than myself but, how do you see Eberron handling people who are Deaf or hard of hearing? Are their magical hearing aids developed by House Cannith or Jorasco? Is sign language common place?

keithbaker

(From David Armstrong) How widespread is the acceptance of undead throughout Karrnath? I understand that most Karrns do not know their king is a vampire, and that there are undead laborers in the major cities at least. In Joe Flyspeck village, are undead laborers common as well, or are they rare, or out of vogue, or feared, distrusted, what? What is the perception of both thinking and unthinking undead throughout Karrnath?

Lee Stevenson

Hi Keith!! Just wondering, would the Carnival of Shadows set up shop in Sharn when it comes to Breland and, if so, would it be in one of the districts like the university district or would it be outside of the city?

Carlton Anderson

I'm not asking for an "official" reason, as I assume it's intended as a GM-determined mystery, but what are some of the reasons you'd use in your own games for the disappearance of the Phiarlan heirs from the Demesne of Shadow in Dread Metrol?

hyperewok1

Given how the most famous historical figures are often mythologized and become key facets of their cultures, how do historical figures factor into Thelanis? Is there a Dread Conquerer riding about, endlessly seeking to expand his domain?

Parker Wimberly

So I don’t know if you have answered this elsewhere but what are some reason celestial from the planes would have interest in mortals on the material plane.

Chance

Do you have any thoughts on how artificial/mortal-made manifest zones might be created and potential uses in a campaign?

Joey Norwood

What kind of magical subculture exists in Korth, centered around (and under) the Tower of the Twelve, in Karrnath, in Khorvaire, in your Eberron?

Matthew Booth

Question from a non-Patron I've been asked to share; In the Thorn of Breland books, was there ever a mechanical basis for Steel, the dagger? Did Steel run off explicit 3.5 rules, or was there more narrative focus in what Steel could do?

Peter S.

Hi Keith! In our world (at least western world) latin is the language of tradition. Noble families have their mottos often written in latin, universities have their funding principles in latin, military corps have oaths in latin (semper fidelis) etc.. Is there an equivalent of Latin in Khorvaire, you think?

SamJaz

As a DM preparing to run a Dyrrn the corruptor campaign, what film or actor's performance would you recommend I watch for how you would interpret the character while I'm still working out my own take on Dyrrn?

yh park

Hello Keith! 1. Have you ever imagined ways to make Mournland inhabitable again? I'd like to know if advances in Arcane Science would allow it, or if it would require a powerful spell like Wish, or interference from a higher power. 2. Is there any chance of a new dragonmark appearing in the world that isn't an aberrant dragonmark?

Ben

Do you have additional thoughts about unique magical plants that are unexplored in other material? ECS has some really cool stuff for resources in the Eldeen Reaches and Q'barra with things like the masthin shoots, and I was wondering how they might factor in to day-to-day life around there.

Joseph Meehan

Question (from the Cultures Q&A): How would you make different parts of Aundair feel unique culturally? Not just rural/urban but different duchies?

gonzolikesmovies

Several nations and territories of Eberron are named after certain people or events, but what about the continents? Was Argonnessen named after a legendary wyrm, Xen'drik named after a group of the grandest titans, etc.

Micah Peltier

With D&D rules moving more toward a "members of any ancestry can bear children together; if you want to play a half-orc-half-elf, or a three-quarter-ling, or dwelf, or whatever, just pick one of your parent's ancestries for your mechanics and describe your character's aesthetic however you want" sort of mentality, and with DMs Guild supplements like "An Elf and an Orc Had a Little Baby," *and* with your comment on one of the live Q&A's about having dragonmarks be a 'Prophetic Path' as a separate mechanic for an Eberron campaign, on top of standard character creation: How would you feel about not restricting dragonmarks to specific ancestries? They'd still be hereditary; you'd have to have some parent with the mark in your direct set of ancestors, but if, say, your father was a human with the Mark of Making, and your mother was a dwarf or something, you could be a half-dwarf who manifests the Mark of Making. That sort of thing. Does that break too much of the world's lore? Obviously there's a fair portion of "do what works for your version of Eberron and your table" to the answer, I expect, but I'm curious to hear your thoughts. What might change about the world? Would your answer be different if you were designing Eberron from the ground up today, rather than dealing with well-established lore?

Jamie Bernstein

Does an airship stay put/hover while the Lyrandar pilot needs to sleep (so, 8-ish hours of effective travel), or does the pilot order the elemental to travel while they sleep (so, 24 hours of effective travel)? I can't tell if not having a Lyrandar to actively ward off weather is too great of a risk for the benefit of the extra distance.

We know that Atur has skeletal street crew and Oathbound bartenders, but what are some other perhaps more unorthodox examples of casual necromancy within Atur?
