Greetings!

I’m on my way back from PAX Unplugged and getting ready for a busy holiday month. I plan on running the next session of the Quickstone campaign, holding another live Q&A, and posting a new Frontiers preview. But for now, let’s get to questions!

As always, I will not be able to answer every question; simple questions are the best questions. If I can answer a question in five minutes here, I'll probably answer it. If it would take significant research or an hour of work to answer a question, I probably can't. Feel free to ask questions that didn't get answered in a previous month, just know that I won't be able to get to them all... and if there's a question I've skipped over a few times it means that I need focus to answer it and I haven't had that focus. In addition, I will only answer one question per patron. You can ASK more than one, because one may be easier for me to answer than another, but I'll only answer one.

Thanks again for your support!

If you had to run a Christmas/Holiday themed one-shot in Eberron what would the premise be?

Thomas Brøgger

As far a I know there aren’t many canon sources on Starilaskur even though it’s a fairly large city. If I had my group go there what significant locations, people or landmarks would make Starilaskur stand out?

Hello! So, couple of questions that pop to mind RN this month... 1) Following on from my November question - If you had to place Sphinx-lantis anywhere in Your Eberron, where do you think it would be and why? How do you see their civilization as being? (I believe you'd touched on this somewhat previously.) 2) How do compasses work in Your Eberron? I know that, at least some of them, use a Siberys Shard point but do they operate on magnetic fields (like a real world compass) or something more supernatural. Thanks!

Will Buck

I am expressing continued interest in the different chivalric orders of the Five Nations, even though I know that is a more research-intensive question! And then, for a question that requires less research (also from last month): I'll be running a game within the next couple of months in which the party will be chasing a band of brigands into King's Forest, and I'd like them to encounter a fiery dryad inside a Fernian manifest zone. The brigands have done something here (chopped down all the firepine?) that has thrown off the balance of nature, and now the energies of Fernia threaten to engulf the whole region in flames. Could you help me brainstorm ideas about what this dryad's fey "story" is, and some ways she might suggest that the party could help restore the balance?

Hi Keith! 1) Lady Illmarrow's 3 primary goals are usually to regain her mark, become the new queen of death over Dolurrh, and take vengeance on aeranal and the dragons. What do you think she could do with a Silver Flame-like collection of humanoid souls? 2) What changes to the Mastermaker from Dread Metrol would you make if it were symbiont themed instead of construct themed? 3) In a question from Novemember, you made mention of a passage from Exploring Eberron that talks about how they in the Thunder Sea equip dragon turtles with siege staffs. Let's talk about that. I thought siege staffs were a Cannith thing. How prevalent are they in other groups/areas?

BlackJet

How wealthy are the nations of Eberron? As in, what would be the GDP of the average nation? 10 million Galifar? 100 million Galifar?

Jeremy Redtree

How effective would a warforged be as an underwater miner in 100 meters of water mining Kyber Dragonshards from a volcanic seamount?

Felix Shafir

In your Eberron, how old is King Boranel in 998 YK? I’ve been exploring the prospects of a succession-war style plotline for the Brelish throne, and it seems like this could be influenced by the age range of his many children, which might in turn be influenced by how old Boranel is.

This probably is something that would require you to give it a bit more thought, but I'll ask it all the same: What manifest zones are some of the major cities in Khorvaire are built upon? We know Sharn has Syrannia and Atur has Mabar, but what about Fairhaven, Wroat, Korth, Thaliost, Passage or Metrol, for example? And just in case you don't have time for that one, I'll ask a second one: What benefits could there be to a manifest zone to Dolurrh? Easier communication with the dead is one that comes to mind, and a lesser version of Ennui might be useful for a prison (although absolutely terrible from a human rights point of view), but I'm sure people have found other uses, and I'm curious what they might be.

Eric Smith

While I never finished the story, I did one in Sharn awhile back where a Lhazaar pirate had ended up with a tiny sliver of the prison of Dral Khatuur. What might you have such a thing do to a PC or NPC?

David Byrd

Hello Keith! Would you say house Tharashk feels any moral/sympathetic/kinship reasons for supporting Droaam or is it just a mercantile financial relationship?

SamJaz

Hi Keith! Who do you think would be coming out of the woodwork to make a powergrab in Breland upon King Boranel's death? I know there are parties within Parliment that want a democracy and some that want his brother or one of his kids to take over.

Zed Bundershot

The Night(s) of the Long Shadows has a kind of Halloween+New Years vibe; are there any traditions associated with 'bringing back the dawn': perhaps akin to kissing/toasting/counting down the last moments of the old? I was thinking that House Sivis has a cooped cockatrice they trot out to crow & summon the dawn in a Punxatawny Phil sort of way, but that might be just too regional.

Jamie Gardiner

Hi Keith! Hope you are well! This month I am looking to expand on the everyday lives of the people of Eberron! So with that in mind we'll start with the youngest! The Children of Eberron! What sort of early - secondary education is there, what are childcare services like, are there certain games the kids play together and are there any Eberron specific nursery rhymes? I'm looking to include a young person pickpocketing group in Sharn to fluster my players and look to explore their morality so would love your insight on something like that and the dynamics of Children in Sharn and around the rest of Khorvaire! Many thanks in advance!

Jarrod Taylor

Which band of adventurers would win in a fight- the Badgers or Lei, Pierce, Daine, and Jode?

Baron Legi

Hi Keith, While House Lyrandar controls most of the water travel, Khorvaire is a continent with many winding rivers. What river based cultures and companies have been set up in the niches where Lyrandar hasn’t dominated the water ways? River Otter shifter communities? Grungs? Fresh water Locathah? Bullywugs?

Carlton Anderson

Reposting from last month: what are some of the reasons you'd use in your own games for the disappearance of the Phiarlan heirs from the Demesne of Shadow in Dread Metrol?

hyperewok1

You've mentioned before that your novel characters all have clear roots to 3.5E mechanics, so if you could write a new novel, what 5E subclass would you want to build a protagonist around?

Parker Wimberly

So I don’t know if you have answered this elsewhere but what are some reason celestial and fiends of Daanvi from the would have interest in mortals on the material plane. For example if I placed Dis in Daanvi as you have suggested elsewhere. What would be dispater have warlock or make deals with mortals.

Ben Lohr

What sort of legendary buried treasures might Eberron have stories about? Where might they be located? My players are big fans of the One Piece series, and expressed interest in looking for treasure on the scale of the in-universe "one piece," said to be so grand that it could set you and your family up for the rest of your bloodline. Are there any hidden treasures of this variety that would be whispered in taverns and told between crews over pints of ale?

Hello there mighty fine Hellcow, 1) A Soul Coin in d&d possesses a mortal soul bound after death and can be used in a few ways, or just traded around. Made in a factory in the 3rd layer of hell, they are featured prominently in the 5e campaign Descent into Avernus. Do you see the Lords of Dust using such a thing, either for commerce or power, etc? Personally i don't know if i see it, but "everything in d&d has a place in Eberron", so I'd like to hear your thoughts (discounting 4e's baator of course). They're more likely, imo, to turn someone into demon glass as a punishment or something. 2) What are the potential implications on the Silver Flame as a force if an overlord were to become totally free? If a large portion of the total power is used to keep them bound, breaking only when the prophecy dictates, would the rest of the power the world has access to increase, potentially leading to more powerful templars? Or perhaps the flame would retain all that power for when the overlord is rebound, sort of like segmenting memory on a hard disk.

Simon

Once again asking for your translation of Baldur’s Gate 3 's plot, characters and themes into Eberron

Peter S.

Hi Keith! In a campaign with the BBEG being the dreaming dark, whould be Kalashtar the right quest-givers? How much aware are Kalashtars of the schemes of the dreaming dark? How would Kalashtar or other NPCs learn from the dreaming dark plots?

Micah Peltier

How do you get players to engage with the religions of Eberron, especially considering the presence of tangible Overlords, as well as the "great powers" of the planes? In my experience, my players haven't seemed terribly interested in much of that stuff. And to some extent, I see why. Players not inclined to play a Cleric, Paladin, or Warlock likely don't want much to do with religions (or at least, they're not forced to think about such things for their class). And those that do, well, they tend to want to explore their relationship with their deity/patron. The religions of Eberron, as interesting and realistic as they seem to me, don't provide much of that. Two of the major three (The Silver Flame and the Blood of Vol) don't have canonical gods at all (well, not counting the fact that they're both at least partially syncretic with the Host), and the Sovereign Host's deities don't interact with people directly *if they even actually exist at all*. Pair that with the fact that a cleric or paladin can just as easily explain their powers as coming from an Architect of Irian, a Dark Power of Mabar, or any number of other planar beings--that definitely do exist--it seems difficult to want to engage with the most common religions.

craigrkennedy

When the Couatls sacrificed themselves to create the Silver Flame and bind the Overlords, was it one big 'whoooosh' of silver flame energy net casting out and binding Overlords and greater fiends? Or did they basically just create the tool, then the dragons had to do a whole process using the binding power of the flame guided by the prophecy to take down the overlords one by one? (And did the fiends have knowledge of the draconic prophecy at this time?) I don't think I've read anything on this, but the second option seems a little bit more interesting to me and would better explain the differences in how each Overlord is actually bound (e.g. Dawn and Dusk shards are unique to Masvirik, khyber shard vs. other vessel, etc.).

Here is a simple and fun one I have: does Eberron have comics books? And if they do what genres or notable pulp heroes exist in these comics? Does eberron have a superman? And which comics/genres are the most popular in which nations?

Skam

How exhaustive is the CSF lizardfolk’s allegorical form of Draconic? Is something as benign as “Good morning Zah, are we out of eggs?” rendered as a poetic allegory or is that only reserved for things relevant to the dream of Siberys? To that end, how do CSF ambassadors work within Newthrone if communication is so troubled, did Ven have to mime out the Adderport Accords or something?

Spike Hemphill

1. Does Zoratesh have any support for his invasion plan of Khorvaire among any of other Kalaraq or do they all think he is idiot? 2. Are they any Lluora inspired lines? If yes which branch of Riedra do they serve?

Bekah McCue

I had a realization that confuses me recently: How does one reconcile the ambiguous nature of gods in Eberron with the fact the Queen of the Dead is a known entity who will send Maruts after you if you res somebody you shouldn't?

WebbRosson

How up candid are Chamber members allowed to be with their “minions” regarding the prophecies? If the Lords of Dust are about to score a big win, will a dragon get in trouble for blowing their cover with the PCs if it’ll stop the fiends?

Beoric

Saw your entry at Scroll for Initiative, so I have to ask: how would you incorporate Expedition to the Barrier Peaks into an Eberron campaign?

Marcus

Hi Keith :D - I had another question originally in mind but I realised it would probably be a bit intense, as with most of my questions it would descend into a chain of successive questions, so thought I would ask this one instead for the time being - What is your favourite moment/story from being a player, not a GM, in Eberron?

Spike Hemphill

Alternative Question: I like making my own Quori types. I find it easy to think of negative emotions they can manipulate. I love drawing their physical forms. However I have trouble finding creating positions and duties for them in Dreaming Dark? For example I thought a Quori that inspires envy could be ambassador or propaganda spreaders but why would Dreaming Dark need that? They are stuck in Dal Quor.

Spike Hemphill

Could there be Quori type that serves as psychiatrists or philosophers in Dreaming Dark? Dreams are made of combination of emotions and memories. Dream interpretation or ability to understand human mind is a useful profession for Dreaming Dark. All Quori understand certain singular emotion but philosophers Quori can put all pieces together about particular dreamer or from theories about best ways to control mortals.

Spike Hemphill

Could you see there being 13- 1 types of Quori? I like said in a earlier post I like making own Quori but I just want your advice on this. I wonder if it too many and I am not sure how make one of types missing.

What are some examples of triggering events that would pull a lingering ghost or haunt over from the Etherial veil

Cabur Skirata

Question asked by one of my players, can a dragonmark from m one of the house lineages become aberrant?

Earth Seraph Edna

How do you portray the de facto disintegration of the Korth Edicts in your games? Obvious examples include Stormhome in Aundair, the Lyrandar (plus a handful of Medani) administrators of Valenar, and the dragonmarked enclaves in Xen'drik (and, to a much lesser extent, Aerenal and Sarlona). What else can be done to show that the dissolution of Galifar as an entity has allowed the dragonmarked houses to overstep their boundaries? A running gag that I have begun to introduce into my games is the concept of leasing properties to dragonmarked for a duration of one millennium. This has come up from time to time.

What might the scales call the Basura Swamp in northern Q'barra?

Chance

What are some notable ideas you've heard of others using in their Eberron that interest you?

Michael Hughes

From reading, I know that Gnolls in Eberron tend to live fairly short lives, around 30 or so years. What kind of implications would them living as long as a human bring?

Joey Norwood

Hi, Keith! Do you have any ideas you'd like to share about how you might run a campaign with the Patron of the adventuring group being The Twelve? I'm specifically interested in Korth's Tower of the Twelve and potential NPCs prominent within the organization. Are there currently three representatives of House Cannith there, or is Cannith West the sole force for the Mark of Making? Similarly for Mark of Shadow, is it just Thuranni (no Phiarlan)? Any thoughts you'd like to share would be much appreciated!

Jaap Krekel Schuit

Could the children of winter have a scheme to over throw lamannia from within the rot. And thereby impacting eberron?

Leslie Mactir

What is the significance of 'ber'?

Sims

Unfortunately not an Eberron question but a content one, but I’ve noticed as of late WOTC/DND Beyond has been adding third party sources on DND Beyond with Critical Role (obviously a big one), but also Ghost Gaming and Dungeon Dudes? Have they reached out about Kanon books (Exploring, Chronicles, Threshold) or if they did, would you be amenable to that? With KB Presents closing its doors, would that reopen at least one? Obviously working on stuff you exclusively own is more economically beneficial and this is all just conjecture, but after seeing Drakkenheim pop up, the question has been burning in the back of the head. More Eberron wise, any advice on building Q’Barra towns? Population? Industry? House Enclaves? Nobility? I like the details provided on Threshold and Ardev, but they also take place in the more settled Breland

1.I am reading through your old articles and I saw one that mentioned the Hammerfest Dwarves in the Demon Wastes. They sound very fascinating, would you ever elaborate on them like you did with some of the various gnome societies? 2. I see a lot of fans in there games running a campaign where a brand new dragonmark emerges and it got me wondering, if you HAD to create a brand new dragonmark, what ideas would you have? 3. I like Kalashtars but I'm a bit intimidated by how their behavior and body language is "strange and alien". what tips would you give on roleplaying one? 4. I feel like I haven't sufficiently learned about Darguun culture yet beyond they are held together by Haruuc and they keep slaves. is there any source that goes further into the details of their culture day to day? for that matter, how do the Darguun culture differ from the Marguul Bugbears? 5. in your Age of Monsters Q&A you talked about a proto-Dar civilization, any quick ideas on how they'd act differently from the Goblins of the Uul Dakan? I'm imagining a race of proto-Dar escaping the Uul Dakan by becoming koalinths and escaping to the depth of the ocean. 6. In the age of Monsters Q&A you mentioned that the dwarves came to Khorvair, but where did they come from? what books give their history before Sol Udar? 7. under what circumstances do you think the dragon marked houses (one house, a group, or the whole twelve) would try to take over khorvair? I have an idea of one day the reason behind the mourning is discovered and the last war starts up again, but not just the five nations are fighting, the dragon marked houses are no longer neutral and are fighting as well.

Hello Keith! My players questioned whether a mortal can attain divinity and become a god or divine being in this world. This question was probably inspired by stories from other D&D worlds. They also wonder what makes the Sovereign Host and the Dark Six considered gods. I was wondering if you could offer any possibilities, opinions, or ideas on the question of divinity in Eberron?

Jeremy Callister

Just a little thought that came to me that I don't have an immediate answer for. The coatl are the direct "children" of Siberys, while the dragons are described as being a mix of the blood of Siberys combined with the soil of Eberron. What would the child of Siberys and Khyber look like?

Daelkyr Devon

Hey Keith, my question is re: Spelljammer/Planescape/Border Ethereal/Astral Plane. I still have yet to see any Siberspace episodes, so I apologize if my question is answered already. So, my understanding of Material Plane vs Astral vs Ethereal vs Siberspace is ostensibly, the Material Plane physically connects to Siberspace, which contains the Ring, the Moons, and if you fly far enough, the Astral (Eberron's Astral, I'm disregarding the greater Astral Sea). The Ethereal Plane essentially is a blanket that covers everything, and on places of particular planar influence (Manifest Zones, Moons, etc.) you might be able to bleed into that particular plane through that area's Border Ethereal, otherwise you'd need to travel via Plane Shift adjacent magic, or the color pools in the astral. Which brings me to my very silly and simple question, that might have a boring answer: Where, physically, is the Sun? And what significance does it have, if any, in a Spelljammer Siberspace campaign? Is it in generic Siberspace, the Astral, or just outside the veil to the Sea? And does it have any cosmic significance beyond being a big ball of light/fire?

Given the Existence of Vicious Mockery, how lethal is the average rap battle? Is a Roast sometimes used as an elaborate form of execution?
