The old Monty Python joke about nobody expecting a visit from the Spanish inquisition was surprisingly false. Inquisition always told you well in advance when they were coming so you could prepare your legal defense. And as their function was to root out muslims and jews practising their religion in secret and not hunting witches, they usually ended up defending those accused of witchcraft from locals who did not understand that canon law had a quite strict definition of witchcraft. The papal inquisition did investigate some witches, but most witches were tried by lay courts, not religious courts.
