WIP 138 - Updating the SSS webpage via HTML (Patreon)
Content
(A quick starting note: Content for the SSSpicy tier will update this Saturday!)For today's WIP I wanted to show you the code behind SSS on the web!
There's various files I need to update for each update. I use a program called "Brackets", but technically you could do it with any text editor.
First (pic 1) I take the most recent html file and remove the color from the "Next" and "Latest" buttons. The way these work at the moment (thanks to Ajax code) is that the links are actually always active. But "Latest" just points back to the main index page, while "Next" won't work because the next file doesn't exist. If I hadn't Ajax, it would produce an error. As is, the webpage just doesn't update.
Next I need to change the current html file (pic 2). Here are the most changes. Date, description, picture files, the FastComment code, etc. Put some nice words under the comic (that I mostly copy of Patreon because I'm a bit too lazy to come up with new words. XD) If I forget any of these things there's trouble down the road as something won't work. No next page or weird line breaks, etc.
Pic 3 shows pretty much the same, but now I'm copying this chunk into the index.html instead of the current page file.
Next (pic 4) I update the Archives with a new line before I finally (pic 5) update the RSS page.
As I sometimes forget to change a little bit of the code (that might involve forgetting to replace the
with ain the archive or something similar) I always upload the page to a testing space where I check out the page.
On update day, I then use a FTP client to upload the files to my webpage.
All in all it's perhaps not the most elegant way to update the site, but I do like having control over my page. I've been working on webpage code as hobby in the late nineties already and while a lot has changed, I'm still a bit old school in that regard.
Of course, social media and patron are extra - but those don't require code.
