So obviously neither Weserubung nor Praying Mantis... here's a battle that you probably you don't know about. It's the Swedish Empire vs the Russian Tsardom, which was a little bit sticky. Anything involving Russians on YT is naturally going to attract certain points of view, so I've tackled this mostly from the Swedish point of view. There's plenty about this that I don't like: not least the maps and the way that I had a really good book on the battle that I can't find, but... I think it gets the point across.

That said, perhaps I should start aiming at some more common battles on the basis that it's easier to get material for them.

In other news, we've had the first day of Fight Club's JL28 STAFFEX play out. There's been a lot of missiles flying around the South China Sea so now we need to take stock, adapt and get the next day's plans in to White Cell. It's awesome.

Meanwhile on Youtube, the first of the three videos I'm doing for Slitherine/Matrix Games has gone live, injecting a little chaos into my schedule (though I wonder how many people will figure out what "Lattichdorf" means...).

On the one hand, the video probably deserves a little room to breathe... on the other, the editor type videos generally don't do very well and I really want to get Semper Fi Syria 4 out to gets some explosions back into the mix. Not sure right now wheher I want to stick to the schedule or delay SFS4 a little.

Of course, I could delay SFS4 by a week and feed you guys the final Baltic Shield Mission (and cook something up for the Youtube members) and scrounge up a solid week of breathing space to tackle the next Matrix Games video before bearing down on SFS5.

Decisions, decisions...

The War Room XVII: Battle of Poltava, 1709

Raw

The war room format shines when focusing on individual engagements like El Hamel and this episode. I would love to see hour by hour breakdowns of sub engagements of more modern conflicts or the entirety of older battles like this one.

Listening how the Swedes hinged their tactics on surprise, initiative and enemy behavior sounds like a theme that carried its weight all the way to the Germans in WWII. Equally interesting is how that formula eventually failed when the requisite conditions for success were no longer possible due to an operational solution of Russian design.

Yeah, that's the stuff I enjoy. You can sum this battle up with a sentence, but it loses all the nuance.

Yep. And historically, it tends to work really well right up until it doesn't.

Great video on a battle and a war I'd never heard of. Is it weird that one of my main take-aways is "I love paintings"? I really appreciated all the art you were able to source!

That is not weird at all! I probably enjoy digging through image searches for the right art too much.
