Every now and again, you just run into a brick wall and then the right video topic smacks you in the face. Having spent most of this week (and last week, come to think of it) trying to nail down first artillery and then the differences between turn-based and real-time... all I really needed to do was spend an afternoon trying to shoot my own troops.

So this is actually quite interesting: CM's friendly fire mechanics are somewhat nuanced and I think fairly reasonably calibrated.

Anyway, that's out of the way so we're straight on to Semper Fi Syria Mission 10: SNAFU. Which is looking like it probably has an apt title and my initial take on the map and briefing already has me wondering how many mines are in the minefield and whether it's worth expending pixeltruppen or vehicles to penetrate it. We'll see.

At the same time, work continues on preparing the Winter Turn-by-Turn: we now have some tentative objectives and drop zones and I'm starting to nail down the Soviet Force. The US are already pretty solid, being airborne infantry and all.

So, plenty to look forward to! Still hanging on for Patreon to make the per video to monthly switch, I'll keep you all informed.

Interesting. I have wondered about this. I also wonder if ROF has any impact on the probability. On the surface, it seems like an MG42 (1200 rnds/min) would have a greater chance of causing friendly fire casualties compared to an M1919 (600 rds/min), even when the firing units knows where the other unit is.

In my experience the Mk19 has been my biggest problem for fratricide. Much of it has to do with how it’s modeled (significantly less accurate for balance sake). I don’t do overhead fires with it all anymore because all it takes is one round hitting a branch to shwack half a fire team.

Yeah, watching the Mk19 fire anywhere near friendlies always makes me wince.

Hmmm. You would think that chance to wound per shot is the way to go, which would obviously mean that high RoF= more friendly fire chance, but I'm not convinced. I honestly can't remember any instances of taking friendly fire from small arms at all, never mind if I've had more incidents playing as the Germans than the Allies.

So, it probably should make a difference, but with the way CM abstracts friendly fire, it just doesn’t.

Unlike real soldiers, AI pixeltruppen have complete faith that their comrades won’t shoot them in the back. Who knew?
