Here's a bit of fun based off this week's video: a tactical decision game. If anyone hasn't encountered one of these before, they're a useful training tool where participants are given a situation, then have to react to an event.

For an extra challenge, see if you can verbalise your orders before the video clip at the end finishes!

Otherwise, text answers in the comments. You should be able to download the images so you can draw on them, if that helps.

This is a bit of an experiment: we'll see how it goes, how much fun it is and whether it's worth doing more!

Your reinforced Cav Scout Platoon is spearheading the Coalition advance south down Highway M5 and has entered the Qutaife Gorge:

The gorge itself must be cleared to maintain the speed of Coalition progress south and represents a likely ambush position, but thus far today enemy resistance has been minimal. A reinforced combined arms company is half an hour behind you, the Coalition has total air superiority.

Your Cavalry platoon consists of you and your Platoon HQ plus 3 four man scout teams mounted in M2A3 Bradley Cavalry Fighting Vehicles (Alpha 1-1, 1-2, 1-3 and 1,4), reinforced by two attached rifle squads riding in M2A2 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles (Alpha 1-5 and 1-6).

Halfway through the gorge you are operating as such:

Alpha 1-2 and Alpha 1-6, followed by you in Alpha 1-1, are advancing down the Highway. The Highway runs along a shelf dug into the right side of the gorge, with a sheer wall of rock on the right and a short but steep drop on the left in the gorge bottom.

Coming up on your left, on the other side of the gorge is a small farm consisting of several buildings and some orchards. Alpha 1-3 and Alpha 1-6 have just left the Highway via a dirt track leading down and across to a secondary road on the far side that leads to the farm.

Alpha 1-4 is bringing up the rear.

This is your view looking forward from the CITV mounted on your Bradley's turret roof:

Suddenly, Alpha 1-2 hits a mine. The platoon stops.

Staring at the screen of your CITV, you see this: https://youtu.be/s7aIiQXSwxU

What do you do now?

What are your orders?

1-2, pop smoke and dismount. 1-5, reverse. All units will move behind 1-3 and 1-6, dismount, and assault the farm, scout teams in front. Bradleys divide to watch both sides of the highway. 1-2 scouts and crew disengage as able. EDIT: unsure what damage 1-5 sustains or if my orders would prevent it. After a few seconds of thought, I’d probably send either 1-4 or 1-1’s scout team to follow the ridge on our right from where it begins close to us. Not sure if I’d get that out in time. In general, the plan would be to let infantry identify where the enemy is and use Bradley’s to suppress and destroy. Thoughts: This plan is certainly pretty basic, but it’s probably all I could come up with in close to real time. Some of it might also be covered by whatever our SOP for ambushes/mine strike is. I certainly have difficulty telling where the fire is coming from in the video, but I think it’s from the farm building or above it on the ridge/military crest

Okay, sit rep is about like how the SNAFU scenario's concerns were. The greatest threat for the Bradley's at the moment by order of magnitude: ATGM, arty, RPG, infantry. Any tanks show up, that's above and beyond Cav expected capabilities, in my book. Sure, they could take on T-72s and the like, but they'd have to play it real close and expect things to go south very quickly. If tanks show up, it's pull back and wait for reinforcements. Tanks aside, there is no cover except at the farm, which means that's an engagement waiting to happen as well. Expect ambushes along the top of the south slopes, mines to the front, and possible ambushes along the north slope. I'd really like infantry eyes on that north slope, but no cover so it'll have to wait until things develop a bit more. On the other hand, depending on 1-2's situation, there could be eyes from troops there on dismount, and if anyone is okay there and the vehicle is toast, they're gonna be dismounting. Intent: the farm needs to be taken, no question. That north slope looks fairly traversable from the grade, so approach will come from the west of the farm along the north slope. 1-3 and 1-6 are already there and so they'll form a line and approach the farm from the west once in position up the north slope a bit. 1-4 will deploy in between where 1-3 and 1-6 are initially, as reserve for that approach, while 1-1 and 1-5 are base of fire on the farm. Depending on the state of 1-2 I'd love dismounted eyes from there, but I'll work with what I got. No mention of assets, which is fine. If they're available, great, but if not, then not. Call it my Red Army 'upbringing' in CMBB, I guess.

And... I watched the video. Lordie, lordie. Bad day at the office for sure. Plan still stands, but 1-1 get off the road! and get to the dip to the north. 1-4 and 1-1 form overwatch with 1-3 and 1-6. New orders: head up that north slope and proceed to flank the farm from the north on higher ground.

Ok. I'm assuming 1-5 is holding a completely dead rifle squad because no one got out. Every one in 1-2 needs to be on the opposite side of the barrier. 1-1 lays down fire for 4 seconds then smokes and reverses because atgms are in play. 1-1 dismounts and moves to get on the ridge to call in fires. 1-3 and 1-6 dismount. Bradley's take hull down and looks for muzzle flashes. 1-4 covers 1-1. We took contact. We don't need heroes. After our air assets remove that hillside the rifle platoon moves up to see if anything shoots back. Platoon HQ tries to spot those anti tank teams. Atgms are priority but the farm house needs to be secured to even see them. I also expect arty fire in that kill zone. The cav element should be to take that farm house especially after a couple bombs hit that area.

Barend

Driver, smoke, back up Gunner, take over, move to loc of 1-6 1-2, 1-5, smoke, back up to current location of 1-6. 1-3, smoke, hold position, dismount, scout to East 1-6 come on line with 1-3, dismount 1-4 move forward on line with 1-3 and 1-6, dismount 1st orders to move out of killzone 2nd order will be to line up N-S, west of the farm complex, gain fire superiority and attack East. Also call higher and give sitrep, ask for immediate indirect support on suspected enemy locations before committing to a ground assault. Really like this format

Seems like a bit of a throwback to your old Dangerous Crossing series about Strykers in Ukraine.

A little bit, yeah. Of course, Youtube degraded the format for that and it doesn't work properly anymore...

Sounds good! Pretty much what I did in the mission (though that's a little different)
