This was actually a really fun video to make. The history is super interesting, the tactical history of what went on the day is fascinating and it's from an era where there's a lot of visual material- photographs, maps etc- to incorporate into the video. Though I'm not 100% happy with the air-assault arrows...

Anyway, the flying bananas referenced earlier are the H-21 (or CH-21) Shawnee, used by the US to support the ARVN in Vietnam, so called because... they look like great big flying bananas:

Of course, it's the early days of air assault and the H-21 had a lot of problems- not least that it was designed for much colder environments and lost a lot of lift capacity in the warmer, more humid environment of SE Asia. Plus, at the tactical-technical, only having a single door on one side of the aircraft to pile out of when you get to the LZ is a bit of a problem.

With that out of the way I've gotten stuck into Semper Fi Syria Mission 11. I strongly suspect this is the penultimate mission of the campaign... it feels like it now that I'm about 75% of the way through. Bit of a grind, not necessarily that much fun- though whether that's a function of map size, terrain, patented Hapless planning failure or a combination thereof is up for debate.

At least I'll have a video justifying my reluctance to engage in urban warfare!

On the other side of that mission we're back to a Unit Guide. No ideas as of yet- I'd even have to check whether we've got a WW2 or Modern unit next in line- but that's the plan.

I read the book A Bright Shining Lie by Neil about the military maverick John Vann. The chapter on the Battle of Ap Bac showed that advanced weapons can fail when tactics and willpower are lacking. can't wait to see this video, i've never seen a video documentary on it!

I tried not to dive too much into the personalities, so Vann might be a bit under-represented here!

This has nothing to do with any of this, but in your Firefight 3 basics video, you had links to three mods for SF2. The unit icons were still there, but the website for the sound and graphics mods no longer exists. Did they move somewhere, or do you have any similar mods you’d recommend?

Great video! I like the animated war maps while you described the events.

John Paul van should be a DLC of his own LOL. He'll have a command rating of +8 And skill level will be Legendary (higher than Elite.) He'll have the ability to command any subunit no matter how many levels down

I think everything that is still out there is all pretty much here: https://www.thefewgoodmen.com/cm-mod-warehouse/ I can't find Vein's Effects (better explosions) and the HQS Sound mod though :/ It's a pain. I'll have to see about whether I have to space to keep my copies of the mods on Dropbox or something so everyone can share them.

More on topic, this almost seems like a Vietnam-era version of the Battle of Mogadishu, where a seemingly straightforward operation (probably based on overly optimistic assumptions) goes progressively pear-shaped.

Similar, yeah. Good plan on paper, reality says no. I suspect the VC were in a better position to give their attackers a bad day than the Somalis were though.

Thanks for that video on Vietnam. I grew up with that war on the TV and newspapers as a kid in the 60s. First wargame was on Vietnam, called Grunt.

National armies exist to enforce and execute the will of the national political leadership. When the Americans built the ARVN, they failed to take that into account, and mistakenly trained/equipped the ARVN as if the Republic of Vietnam was America, with American values and goals. My father was a USAF pilot and won the Bronze Star in Operation Attleboro (1966), the first battlefield test of the U.S. Army’s then new Search and Destroy doctrine.
