Brought to you by the letter 'A'. The Archer is a bit of a freak, as AFVs go, but of course, that's what makes it interesting!

These Micro Guides aren't as chunky as the usual ones, so they're really about focusing on vehicles (/units?) that wouldn't otherwise be worth the attention. The Archer is a prime example: it's a weird, individual design that doesn't see a huge amount of use with components that have already been covered in other guides (ie. the 17pdr).

It's also an opportunity to focus into certain elements. So the Archer's backwards-facing gun influences its tactical usage, but really restricts its options outside the intended role. The next guide- the Bulldog- is focused on add-on armour packages. I'm currently working on the Chaffee, which is a light tank with a medium tank gun. It also only takes a couple of days to make these, as opposed to, say, a week for the longer guides.

If I can build up enough of a reserve of them, I think they'll be a solid fortnightly addition to the schedule. Right now, they're standing in for full videos while I get back to grips with things after the Persian Predicament.

But I'm rambling. Enjoy the Archer, in all its weirdness!

Having just uploaded it to Youtube and set the scheduling up, I've also just realised that this will go public on the 14th of Feb. So, an Archer on Valetine's Day. Unintentional.

When’s the next campaign gonna come up?

What was the British anti-tank gun doctrine in general during Normandy?

Interesting design. I read that Royal Artillery crewed them and that when firing, the driver had to exit the vehicle. Good thing it was already pointed in the right direction! This may be a dumb question, but did it retain the Valentine armor scheme or was armor reversed as well? Addendum: a 17pdr is a 17pdr, at the end of the day. If I'm going to crew that thing, at least there's a great cannon on it.

I think the armour is mostly the same. I can't see them going through all the hassle of changing it when they can just bolt some superstructure on. The 'driver can't sit in his seat when the gun fires because the recoil will crush his head' thing is a myth, apparently.

And on investigating further it looks like frontal hull armor was the same as the rear hull armor, at 60mm.

Seeing the driver hit the breaks at about 7:20 in the video made me want to vomit imagining what that would have been like for the commander. Fortunately, I don't think Combat Mission models motion sickness.

A 17 pdr is a 17 pdr. Not to mention it can move on its own.
