That thing everyone forgets about: what it is, how it works, how to deploy it and a few things to look out for.

This is kinda putting the 'basic' in 'Basics', but that's the point really. I know I don't use smoke enough, but that's usually because it's more productive in a CM context to just schwack the other guy.

In other news, I've gotten through CMFI's Foiling Fustian Mission 2. Certainly an interesting one- not the most dynamic of missions right until it was. Mission 3 looks like it's going to be crazy. I am a little behind schedule, but had loads of non-Channel related stuff to get done this week. And it is all done, to the relief of those who caught sight of me wielding a hacksaw.

So going into next week I should hopefully have the next Foiling Fustian script ready to record; if there are any more delays this week or next week I have the Bulldog and Chaffee micro-unit guides up my sleeve, ready to fill the gap.

So Foiling Faustian is next week right?

GLG

Hapless' video illustrated that it does, but nothing like HE.

Ben Kerry

Yeah. It is a weapon of dubious terror (always want a napalm option for Combat Mission titles, but fires are almost impossible to model)

Anyone read/see/hear about use of smoke grenades/bombs/shells in the Russo-Ukrainian War? I ask because I have not.

Ben Kerry

RUSI said they should use more, others claim the drones make smokescreens near impossible to use

I can't think of any specific examples, but I'm sure it's been done. I think a big issue might be the sheer depth of the FEBA: smoking up enemy positions so you can cross a field isn't a big deal, smoking up so that you can advance 20km to even get to the frontline without getting schwacked by artillery and drones is something else entirely

UsuallyHaplessVideos

WP can cause casualties, but it's considerably less effective at that than HE

Chodester

Always put smoke (as close if anything) in their face with indirect fire. In real life, never let an officer tell you to charge through an area you just hit with white phosphorus, everyone will have a very bad day

Chodester

Heard about it in some Russian doctrine video on trench assault for obscuring the Ukrainian supporting assets but no vids

Ray L

Doctrine may say that smoke should be placed on the objective and/or supporting fire positions … but how do you blind FPV drones being operated from behind the frontline?

Ben Kerry

OK, it's actually kinda disappointing that you can't mix smoke with HE on fire mission (according to several sources Russian units in Grozny learned that it's better to mix in a couple smoke shell with HE)

Chodester

A gunny from Iraq told me about the results as well, I can confirm that hand me down stories paint a vivid picture

Ben Kerry

Well, the most common way is EW, fibre optic ones are a pain (basically cheap NLOS that don’t rely on the degeneracy that is modern MIC)
