Nothing like a chunky bodycount to round out a campaign. It's pretty much like the latter half of the previous mission on steroids, except with a glaringly looney tunes objectives. Historically accurate, it must be said, but floating in that region of "So crazy it just might work!" vs the reality that it will definitely not work.

Again, I was able to overcome the sheer volume of units to control by... ignoring about 2/3rds of them. That's something I talk about at the end, going over some of my thoughts about the overall campaign.

That said, I think I missed mentioning that I inflcited a total of 1214 casualites on the British. Not too shabby, but we should be realistic about how much the AI was responsible for that.

Anyway, that's that over and done with. Time to pick a new campaign! Preferably something hovering around the much more comfortable battalion scale... We'll see.

Whoever drove those trucks deserve an iron cross

Ben Kerry

Well, in large scale combat operations the cumulative casualty of frontline units quickly exceeds 100%

Chodester

So what is next for the cinematic campaign?

Ben Kerry

Someone suggested CMCW’s US campaign. Would like the ‘79 one

Jimmychanga

Oh that one would be interesting. Though the later campaign would also be very interesting as well, given the M901s and M1 Abrams going up against T-64s.

Jimmychanga

they're going out with a more than a bang

Chodester

That’s a good choice, I also saw comments about Purple Heart Highway which would scratch my itch, but also I’m very intrigued about CMRT because we’ve only seen online PVP and one scenario

Ben Kerry

I guess most CMRT scenarios would be too big to be comfortable. Honesly Hapless is the more “Monty” style commander, slow methodical and usually likes building up forces for one big push. Can be maneuverist if absolutely necessary.

UsuallyHaplessVideos

I'm honestly not sure. It's definitely got to scratch a different itch than Foiling Fustian.

UsuallyHaplessVideos

@Ben Kerry Is it possible to be manoeuvrist against the AI? That sounds like a video all in itself.

Ben Kerry

I mean the PVP videos. Strike at Karkand was the few maneuverist battle and it paid off

Colby Simpson

Have you ever thought about playing a campaign against a human opponent role-playing as what the AI would be in an ideal world? I reckon you could hardly have a better set-up for the narrative side of things.

Chodester

Wouldn’t that theoretically take more time to produce a video? Definitely more intense and closer calls in combat but sounds like videos would come out roughly every 3-5 weeks for one 20-30 minute video

Colby Simpson

Oh it would certainly be more of a fiddle but if the time playing was really well scheduled so that both players are present during a certain time window, then the time it takes Hapless to play a scenario would be double or tripple? Theres also the question of how much time playing a scenario takes up compared to filming, editing, etc. but just thinking about the scenario in this video, most of the defenders turns would be pretty fast. All you would need to do is shuffle around a few infantry units and have Shermans reverse away when all their supporting infantry has been shot to pieces.

Ben Kerry

Or play some scenarios against human players. More balanced and perhaps more "realistic" than "meeting engagements" in quick battle

UsuallyHaplessVideos

I have played a mutliplayer campaign against a human opponent before. And got my arse handed to me. There are some design considerations to deal with- scenario designers making their missions with single-player in mind frequently give the AI extra forces or higher (or lower!) soft factors to make up for the AI's inadequacies. Those choices frequently result in skewed balance when human control is applied. And second- the difference in production time is massive, due to the increase in PBEM play time. I can play through a scenario on my own in perhaps half a day, not including planning etc. That'll turn into a month or more for PBEM. And that's not counting the difficulties in finding a good opponent who can invest the time and effort.

Colby Simpson

Yeah the game against Chap was a good watch. I forget that it was a campaign because the videos were unscripted. What I meant was something much more akin to one of the usual campaigns against the AI, so you playing through a number or different scenarios across different maps with the focus on the narrative and emergent little stories that make CM shine. But yeah balance is absolutely a can of worms. What I had in mind is a set up so the second party is roleplaying instead of playing to win, something more in the spirit of Arma Zeus than true PVP. So, like an AI campaign, each scenario you are taking 10% casualties, more or less, and the secondary player is taking significantly more of course. Anyhow, I digress. It's easy to think up cool sounding ideas if you're not the poor guy making them happen. About an opponent, if it were scheduled right I reckon I could give you a decent game in a couple days instead of a month.

Colby Simpson

Yeah I've been working on a few maps for a SF2 campaign myself but I hadn't decided whether or not I wanted to complete the whole tedious process just for it to become obsolete with CM3 on the horizon. But given it's CM, CM3 could be out soonish or in 5 years.

Ben Kerry

OK, what does CM3 bring realistically for the "older" games? And I have a creeping fear that before CM3 comes out World War Three will broke out first
