And... well, all I'll say is no spoilers!Increasingly curiously about the upcoming Soviets now...

Very interesting. Its a bit like the USSR training scenario vid you did or The War Room vid on a WWI German attack. When it works it works (still with all those caveats you talked about). When it doesn't work you dont have a company anymore. There is no in-between and no chance to re-adjust your plan. I would say about the Soviets dont they favour short range weapons? Maybe even harder to close the distance at the start. Note, I have never played as them so what do I know.

Very surprising outcome! But as you said likely a bit of luck involved. Loving this series so far. I am actually playing as the Italians in a PBEM at the moment- still at the posturing stage but will see if I can apply some lessons learned from this. Great vid as always :)

This is exactly how I ran the Commonwealth playthrough! I'd faintly remembered reading a platoon commander's memoir, I think from Italian or Sicily campaign, which mentioned them creating a hybrid formation as the war went on. They massed their Brens and made a big mob of riflemen for assaults. So I gave that a go with heaps of smoke from company/platoon mortars and was equally surprised. Fantastic video as always, the series has been a really interesting look at each nation's company compositions and play styles.

That sounds about right. The Brits in CMBN and FB are really done dirty by adhering to the TOE and not having spare brens and stens floating about in.

I do wish CM would release a North Africa game so we could at least have some Italian regulars (among other reasons: I’d also like to see the M3 Grant/Lee in the game, too).

My opponent is new so thought I'd play them as a handicap- and a good opportunity to try something new!

The Soviets have a weird Rifle Coy org with loads of differents bits chucked in. I think they'll do well if they can get their SMG platoon into the village, but we'll see.

UsuallyHaplessVideos

That would be fantastic. You can sort of do the last bit of Tunisia by playing in July '43 and making maps without a lot of grass, but that's not really the interesting part of the North African campaign

These Italians just demonstrated that Quantity Has A Quality All Its Own.

Actually I’d suggest adding a “task organization” system

Actually speaking is the SMG platoon more of an enabler? Does the amount of maneuver elements in the platoon allow for inevitable attrition during close combat?

Eldar1944

Well that's why its going to be fun to see the results and why this stuff needs to be tested. My point was more the getting to close combat would be hard. Possibly harder then the Italians. Once there, they will be fine if there are enough of them alive (I think). Hapless has done a different strategy each time but given how well this run got into close combat it might be a good idea to run with it again. But like I said I have not played as the Soviets soooo. I dont know.

Fun and instructive stuff as always. However, I do think there's limited value in using this approach to try to quantify the formations' relative ability. You, as commander, are obviously a big factor, and it is very difficult to unlearn what works from test to test (as you point out). What we really need is a "citizen science" test where a different bunch of us take each formation through a "blind" exercise and then compare the results.

I wonder how they’d do a NA game because they always seem to start western front games with the Americans, but that would mean starting with Torch and fighting the Vichy French.
