Time to try something a bit different! This is a Plannex-esque, or Plannex-adjacent event, where we're going to tackle a hypothetical scenario. The idea is to make some plans for both sides, mash them together and see if what we get is something we can play out in Combat Mission.

Sounds interesting. Is it intentional the useful bits link is access restricted?

Based! Wow! I can't wait! What about my upcoming math exam? (Oh no!)

UsuallyHaplessVideos

... plenty of maths here if you look for it. Time/Distance calculations, for example

Ben Kerry

Also what's the tech period? Drone revolution has changed a lot of things...

Admiral_Korow

After a preliminary look at the location, i have come to following conclusions: 1 The reinforced company can be written off. 2 To deny the enemy the island i would need a massive amount of mines to make any landing too costly for the enemy and enough KZ-5 shaped charges to permanently wreck the runway in order to deny it permanently. 3 it is unlikely that the enemy would even respond at all with ground troops as it is much easier denying any supply runs into the area and wait for a withdrawal.

Ben Kerry

The supply situation will be atrocious. The enemy landing on the island is a given and there's no way to "prevent" it. It is certain that small recon teams could be inserted all along the coastline with absolutely no way to stop such infiltration (however the flat terrain means such infiltrators will have problems staying hidden) The thing is to deny the island to the enemy long enough to disrupt theatre wide operation. We might all die but we signed up for this. The enemy would have to take the port and the town otherwise the island is of no use to them. It is after all an INFO heavy operation, the enemy must be forced to secure the whole island or suffer disproportionate political pressure

Ben Kerry

Also on supply: The US Marine littoral regiments would have to "forage" for food on those pacific islands, still have no idea what that means...

UsuallyHaplessVideos

I will say- 1: The reinforced company has already been written off, the question is how many US assets you can tie up and for how long. 2: Deny might not be the right NATO verb, but essentially the way this ties into the overall intent as in Point 1. You don't have the resources (or maybe the time) to construct a fortress or raze the place. 3: You have enough supply to last the critical first few weeks. While the militarily sensible move would be for Blue to ignore you until you starve to death, the politicians are in charge and want this problem solved ASAP.

Ben Kerry

Yeah, Lt. Col Benya Kerov grimly noted. We will have to keep poking the eagle down there, we need to call for our own demise.

Admiral_Korow

according to point 3 we have weeks, that leaves enough time to heavily mine the island and wreck any infrastructure

Suggestion for Mission 1 of the campaign: After much lobbying, assisted by his father-in-law’s patron influence with the higher ups, Lt. Col Kerov managed to have an SA-6 battery added to his follow-on forces. Getting this unit landed safely (by air? by sea?) is paramount as it can deny the St. George airspace to Blue.

UsuallyHaplessVideos

It would be quite a boring campaign if Blue never reached the island! We could argue the Red Storm Rising experience and say that an SA-6 battery was delivered, but someone loaded the army version of the missiles instead of the naval version and they were rendered useless by seawater in the voyage over?

Nicholas Shaler

Could we get a year for this? Contemporary?

St. George Island is about 10 miles East to West and 5 miles North to South. That sounds like hell to try to defend with only a company. Therefore, I would need to have a mobile defense with my platoons dispersed. I think I would have one platoon keep the entire island's population at bay in the island's main settlement. The weapons platoon and the other two maneuver platoons would be be sent out to outlying buildings away from any prying eyes. I would have all my air defense assets scattered around the island to prevent landing operations. I would disperse my recon assets to possible landing locations. The mortars would be hidden in a building somewhere. I'd have my 2IC with them to make sure none of them go outside. I don't want the house I've hidden them in to welcome an unwelcome JDAM. As for support from higher, I'd want lots of landmines. If we're going hot, we'll probably all be dead before any war crimes trials, so they're going all over a significant portion of the island. Several beaches would have properly marked mine fields. I think one or two would be marked as such, but I would leave clear for supply routes. I would also want some engineers for counter-mobility tasks. I'd rig the airstrip and harbor to be blown up at a moments notice.

Nicholas Shaler

This is second platoon all over again, Ben. As for foraging, I think some of them have populations of decently sized mammals that can be eaten.

Nicholas Shaler

I just saw your other reply saying that I'm not allowed mines. That might also cancel my general aggression towards the locals. If there's a good chance of an upcoming war crimes tribunal, I think I'm going to be selfish and obey those Geneva Conventions.

Nicholas Shaler

Hapless, Military History Visualized just put out a video on Austrian mountain troops which touches on certain drone questions like that one.
