A quick round up of my thoughts for Red here... which also include a bit of analysis for Blue because it's no good making a plan without taking the enemy into account.

The result is some exploration of options for our Red Task Force, but I think the scenario itself is probably a bit too outlandish. The reality- as many of you immediately pointed out- is that Blue actually trying to take the island back with boots on the ground is pretty low down on the menu and probably the worst possible option for them.

The real issue is that events in this context are pretty much entirely dependent on greater level effects and the more I try and reduce things to the tactical CM level, the more outlandish it kinda feels.

So... I think the St George Incident has somewhat hit a dead end. That's not a problem, that's why this is bonus content: sometimes we're going to fail our way forward. The big stumbling block for me is the setting... that's pretty straightforward to solve so we might veer off towards WW2. We'll see.

That’s no problem actually

Ben Kerry

Blue will have to take the island due to political reasons Pentagon planners can whine all they want but the president want the Russians gone ASAP One variation would be that Russians have already landed in secret and has dug in as Americans are coming However the problem is that again, it will be a turkey shoot. Every BTR will be destroyed. The island lacks any real cover. Only way I could think of is the Red being a light infantry force that is already dug in inside several well concealed bunkers and trenches with overhead protections. But you can probably monitor the smoke coming from the bunker’s heating and follow the guys as they go out to the toilet. And if the red are all dug in inside a couple bunkers it’s unlikely they can contest any sort of helicopter landing with the MANPADs they have. The only plausible scenario would be that the US killchain is degraded due to escalated situation in South China Sea and Russian EW/cyberwarfare that denies them all day air coverage of the island. Still, it’s possible to dispatch SEAL teams onto the island by small boats and scale the inaccessible cliffs then carry out reconnaissance. It won’t be long before everything exposed on the island eats a JDAM The American time limit is two days before the president start firing generals for mot going his way. But again, live footages of Russian units blown into pieces would salvage the PR already, see Snake Island

Does any of the CM titles have British commandos in it?

Ben Kerry

For the case of a "joint commando raid" the American rangers are indeed modelled after British commandos initially. And there's the Special Service Force that is American/Canadian. Although I just have an obsession with Cold War and I think Norwegian theatre would be interesting, but CMCW don't feature British Royal Marine's Mountain and Arctic Warfare Cadre or SAS (I did a fanfiction on someone's miniature gaming of a raid in Norway, I headcanoned that there was also an operation that went full Dieppe and the Soviets were kind of "moderately successful" in Norway although it didn't really change the Red Navy's situation and the GIUK gap held long enough for US army units to pour into Europe for the last few days of the war. Also any idea about naval gunfire support? How to simulate direct fire support by Navy assets?

Nicholas Shaler

If you want analogous WWII forces, you could use make the island either a radar station, listening post, or radio relay if you want an excuse for why it needs to be attacked.

Nicholas Shaler

As for which game to put the WWII version in, I think early Fortress Italy would be a lot more believable. I can't imagine there were many raids in Norway in 1945.

The WW2 titles have some naval artillery assets. By the 80s everyone it seems everyone has pretty much standardised around 155mm, so any 155mm battery should do the trick.

UsuallyHaplessVideos

No. I don't think that the Commando TOE was that much different... though there are some units like the Independent Para Coy in CMFI that have a SF-esque TOE

UsuallyHaplessVideos

Snake Island is pretty much a microcosm of how this would pan out. Just a squad of defenders hiding in bunkers getting bombed constantly. Not very engaging from a gameplay point of view...

UsuallyHaplessVideos

I did in fact, in the depths of time, make a CMFI campaign simulating a commando raid in Norway ;) With CMFB though, we can get snow and wooden houses- the Mediterranean buildings from CMFI don't fit that well.

UsuallyHaplessVideos

Yeah. There's plenty of excuses. I like the idea of hitting a coastal artillery battery- CM's concrete bunkers don't get enough love.

Ben Kerry

Why coastal artillery? OK, it could make sense if it's some big alt history stuff where they really opted to send Royal Marines on a big attack, and this is to pave the way for some sort of invasion of Norway. CM is actually a conventional war game so I don't think attacks on radar station is that good to be simulated (typically speaking a big chunk of those kind of raids has something to do with "intelligence", so you'd have to simulate capturing sentries and grabbing files and so on)

Ben Kerry

I mean a gunboat directly firing into whatever they see from the shore onto a pre-designated kill zone.

Ben Kerry

Really? I thought Commandos would have a pretty big difference TOE wise. And maybe they'd use some sort of ad hoc grouping. In the 1984 board game "Ranger" for example there's a entire special form of grouping for patrols. It's very common for some sort of ad hoc grouping to be employed in real life. (PLA and NVA historically really really likes doing ad hoc groupings, especially the NVA)

Ben Kerry

It's actually an information operation game, make me think, that's why I said send light infantry, BTRs are going to be deleted once a recon team or a drone sees them and dials in the nearest fire asset. And they could have a pair of super cobras or vipers firing Hellfire missiles from 8 km away onto anything spotted. By sending only light infantry in concealed pre fab bunkers you could deny enemy information victory by displaying footages of BTRs whacked, instead the enemy will have to land manually to secure the national morale objective. Earlier on I have an entire set of instructions on how to do the information operation.

Flawed military scenarios occur in direct proportion to the meddling of political leadership. And along those lines, we can posit that a proper counter-invasion shaping battle did not occur because there wasn’t time. POTUS decided that there wasn’t time for shaping because of an imminent election, impeachment trial, or some such thing.

The Russian company commander is furiously studying the Japanese defense of Iwo Jima.

Ben Kerry

Not really. in Iwo Jima they had so much time to dig in and cover the island in subterranean structures. In St. George they’ll barely have enough time

Ray L

The Russian major (colonel?) suspects that he’s been set up as a sacrificial lamb, but the Iwo Jima book has general sent him gives him some comfort. Except for how it ends, of course. Is there a Russian equivalent to a final Banzai charge?
