A quick one, mostly to see if I could actually talk for an extended period. Turns out I can and I've managed to edit out the worst of being ill in the process, so... success?

The scenario is one of the base CMCW scenarios, I've just swapped out the opposing sides for some from BAOR. So the defending Americans have been replaced by Brits, the attacking Soviets have been replaced by VDV. In the original they are deployed by helicopter- I suspect the Soviet Army had it's own airborne troops hanging around so they didn't have to rely on the VDV, who were a different branch. I also suspect that, because that would be the least efficient, most expensive and generally worst option, that that is exactly how it worked.

Either way, it's a pretty classic platoon attack. There is some AK on SLR action, though about half the Brits are dismounted vehicles crewmen armed with Sterlings so there's a lot more automatic fire around than you might expect.

I remember the Soviet army at that period did have the capability to make an army MRB airmobile. Later on I remember there were independent air assault units. Maybe I remember it wrong.

I think you talked about the RPG-16 in your Red Zone video.

UH, you basically engaged at roughly PB range. Not your fault, you just have a gift for finding the most concealed route! Good on you. FAL isn't going to show off its qualities, however, in those conditions. Submachinegun country really. No one is going to willingly cross a km of open terrain, but maybe something along the lines of 500m through intermittent covered terrain might work in giving the FAL a better showing?

2:02- US Army is currently getting a bigger rifle cartridge to deal with body armor and for increased effective range.

Yeah, I kinda realised that halfway through. It does somewhat get to the point though: if your weapon performs best when the enemy and/or ground give it the opportunity... maybe you need an assault rifle?

Wow, that's a blast from the past. Unlike that battle though, these VDV actually had more than one round.

I'm not a fan of XM5, it's just some genuinely unhinged procurement choices

Typically I'd say Soviet small unit tactics would heavily depend on task organization and sometimes adoctrinal splitting into teams. East German Willie Sanger airborne battalion (more like a SF unit) was meant to split into 3 men teams when conducting their raids on target.

Point taken. Though to be fair(I like battle rifles actually) all weapons have good and bad characteristics. All weapons platforms do as well(Stryker?). Example, Afghanistan( or Tunisia '43) environment. Not the urban engagements, but the ones out rural. Maybe an assault rifle isn't so good after all when compared to a battle rifle? If you have a position with 300m plus killing fields, battle rifle sounds pretty good. Personally, I tend to like squad TOE's that have a variety between 'short' and 'long' range. Like Sov WWII rifle squads(of course!).

U.S. Army Rangers during the 1970s could assign two M21 sniper rifles to each platoon. I think what a lot of coalition forces really need is some sort of actual mountain infantry. US army don't have that capability except a national guard unit in Vermont. Yeah, tha 10th mountains is a light infantry
