Modern Armour Pen scraped through with a 9-8 win against Artillery Effects! I'm debating whether to bring the RPG-29 out or take on the sub-system degradation challenge with the Shilka.

As for the main effort this week... Metal on Metal has finally wrapped up and the Aftermath Designer Notes are out in the real world, so it's time for introduction of the successor to the Company Challenge: the Platoon Patrol!

The concept here is to get into the nitty gritty of modern infantry platoons, so we're turning to CMSF2 because that has the largest selection. Blue has 5 touch objectives on the map, one of which will be selected at random to be defended by a reinforced squad of very angry, highly competent US Marines (because they have almost comical levels of firepower at that level). Blue will start in one of six randomly assigned setup zones, with no knowledge of where the enemy is.

One of the big problems with the previous two challenge batches was that they became predictable/solvable relatively quickly. Here, we've got five different positions, we're coming in from six different angles and although there's naturally going to be some solution development (key terrain is pretty much always key terrain), things should stay fresh.

I think we'll start with a US Stryker Platoon, but I also think it'll be good to canvas you guys and the Youtube members as to what to try next. There's a lot of motor/mech platoon options in SF2: Strykers, Bradleys, LAVs, AAVs, Warriors, FV432s, Marders, more LAVs, CV90s, YPRs, Nyalas, BTRs, 3 flavours of BMP... should be enough to keep us going for a while!

I'm also debating whether to kick off a WW2 campaign at the same time and alternate along with the usual schedule. That way there people who aren't into the Platoon Challenge have something to sink their teeth into. We'll see. CMFI beckons.

Anyway, that gives us this week's poll. We're back to WW2, Artillery Effects are out of the mix, which leaves us Armour Pen and Infantry Firepower.

Will you be giving the Marines Javelins? I love the patrol concept, I think the results will be really sharply dependent on how much firepower the different IFVs/APCs have, rather than anything about the infantry themselves. That might be the realistic end-result of the forces in question, but I'd be concerned this series will just be an "IFV firepower test" on steroids. I really like the idea of random spawns and redfor locations, that seems like a very valuable testing tool. Will also be very interested to see what casualties in the bayonet strength looks like, a major criticism in some literature is the reduced ability of smaller squads to absorb casualties and sustain the 2nd/3rd/4th attack. Undercaffeinated ramble aside, looking forward to the SF2 platoon series a great deal!

Undercaffinated?! :P I did try the enemy out with a Javelin team and... well, it rapidly turns into "hide from the Javelin" so I swapped it for some SMAWs

If it is Infantry Firepower, can we get an LG40?

I'd actually say it might be better to further abstract the platoon challenges into various "vignette" scenarios that are more "fixed" like fighting in a block, fighting in a treeline, storming a trench or such.
