A super interesting campaign, a strong contender for one of my favourite battles. I did have to cut a fair bit from Soult's somewhat epic trek back to Spain, not least the inestimable Major Dulong leading the forlorn hope to storm not one, but two bridges through the mountains.

Anyway, I'm starting to get a little tired of this particular War Room format. I'm essentially writing an essay and reading it out... and that's fine, but something a bit more conversational might be better. We'll see for the next one.

As always, I enjoyed this latest video. Very smooth and brisk response from Wellesley to developments at Oporto.

A quick question. I have heard Wellington did not want his troops to loot and the rest of it. To keep the Portuguese and later the Spanish onside. Is this true? and was this a widespread policy of all British generals in the peninsula war? As you said it really helped in this battle, I can only find things about Wellington not the other leaders, I don’t think that such orders were given in India, for instance.

IIRC, Wellington was probably a lot more interested in stopping his troops looting because it was corrosive to discipline- not upsetting allies was just a bonus. It's partly common sense, but Wellington's also a bit of a control freak. Hand in hand with that is the fact a lot of Napoleonic armies were very poorly supplied, so the troops had to loot for the basics, in which case they get in the mindset of taking everything else too. Wellington was big on logistics, so his troops didn't have the excuse. Usually.

Contrary to the American president in the movie Doctor Strangelove, with Hapless, fighting *is* allowed in the War Room!

Another great vid, thank you! It struck me that a number of important events before and during the battle would not be "modelled" in a normal wargame - namely the scouting by civilians and then them joining in to facilitate the third river crossing.

The modelling point is really tough. You could maybe include this kind of thing with a White cell or D100 table for random events or whatever... but imagine being the French player and getting completely dunked on by a 1/100 chance.
