The Bronze Age Collapse (approximately 1200 B.C.E.)

So!

It's come to my attention that the unlisted YouTube video that I posted below has been getting shared around pretty aggressively and openly on some social networking sites.  YouTube analytics ***sees everything,*** and so I've been vaguely aware for a while that sometimes the videos get shared with small groups of non-Patreon people.  I've just kinda ignored that up until now, but this time I'm seeing it shared with several HUNDRED non-Patreon people, which obviously can't/shouldn't happen.  I guess it was only a matter of time.

So, this is a separate upload from the YouTube video, this time through Vimeo.  Patreon has a new feature that lets us share exclusive Vimeo links, which (I'm told) won't work if you're not a Patreon member.

I have no idea how Vimeo works, so please give this a quick try and let me know if it works.  And please speak up if anything weird happens with the video, or if you ever have problems accessing it, or whatever.  Like I said, I'm Vimeo-Stupid.

All the best!  :)

Not going to lie, I share them with myself (my email) so I can watch it on my tv with my YouTube account. Never shared it with anyone else tho. Wish there was a way to link my YouTube and Patreon accounts.

Xanadu-King

Works well on my end. Sorry to hear that someone is being an ass and not following decorum.

Aaron Thomas

We fully understand :) Aswell, love the change in pace from Antiquity to the Age of Absolutism and now the Bronze Age.

Historia Civilis

Yes, just so everybody knows, I have nothing to do with that subreddit. I often forget it exists - somebody had to let me know on twitter that there was some shenanigans going on there.

Nelson

The video works fine and it is really sad to hear that you have to resort to this.

Stephen exley

This would work great for me! I don't mind the ads on YouTube as I know it's revenue for you but I watch them to go to sleep to as well.. so this way it's a win win for me. As negative as it is that your vids are getting such traction away from your monetary streams you should see it as a positive that your content is wanted as early as possible... Like history crack.

Um8700

Can confirm that you need Patreon to view the video. You don't even leave the app on the mobile version.

Historia Civilis

I looked into doing that, because my preference would also be to keep it 100% on YouTube, but for the time being it's impossible. There's a way to give people access to private videos, but for the time being you have to do it manually, and there's a hard limit of 50 people per video. I hope that some day there is a button that's like "Let Patreon Supporters View All Private Videos," but sadly that doesn't exist.

Historia Civilis

Oh yeah, I didn't even think of that... this version has no ads. Even better!

Gabriel

They didn’t even ask Tribune Aquila before posting smh

Historia Civilis

Oh good, I wasn't sure if it would also work on mobile. Cool!

Felix

Works great. And feels good to be supporting a non-YouTube platform.

Gilles

Works great so far. And as always, it is really interesting !

Charles Clayton

Sorry man, I posted the preview image on the subreddit (not the video!) to encourage people to sign up for Patreon and build hype. I think that wet everyone’s appetite and so when the video came out people were primed to share the contraband. Never again!

Stephen exley

I don't think it was your fault Charles. I think what you did was good for patreon. If people are going to share "illegally" they'll do it regardless. If anything this new Vimeo platform for early release should increase uptake if it means no ads... Maybe even add the back catalogue there for members only??? Ahem.. please

Oriskó Norbert

Observation 1: Tried to do some minor hacking with it (since the aim of the change is security), it seems to be safe from my attempts to share, and I expect I covered everything that's tried most of the time. So you are good at this part. Observation 2: Video seems to be uncastable to ChromeCast this way. Doesn't really bother me, just mentioning.

Zachary Clawson

I’m so STOKED, I was just reading a book about this!! Also, totally understandable why you’ve adjusted this. It’s not your fault at all, I’m sorry so many people were sharing it early. You’re the second creator I know who’s said something about Patreon subscribers gaming the system somehow.

Zachary Clawson

It also feels good to support a non-YouTube platform.

Sean Leavey

I think YouTube aren't too keen to promote Patreon because they probably want to get a piece of the action themselves. I don't know if they have some scheme already, but they will surely build their own Patreon-like service if Patreon gets much bigger! This in my mind explains why they aren't adding any useful tools to help content creators using Patreon...

Andy Weir

Works for me. Super-lame that people are sharing the private links with non-supporters. It's probably a chain of people thinking "It won't do any harm for me to show it to just one or two friends" which balloons into hundreds of people. What would be cool is a system where each Patreon supporter gets their own custom URL that shows the same video. Then you could find out who is sharing from the URLs that are being hit and warn/ban them. But I don't think Patreon or YT/Vimeo has any feature like that.

Astrofix

180mb/s download and Vimeo is hanging for a second every 5... :(

Ben Parsons

This means I cant cast the video to my TV as it only support casting from YT :( As other commenters have said, I do think it is good not to rely on YT anyway...

Emperor Claudius

I hope I didn't unknowingly contribute to this by casting it to my TV?

Jardueves

Yeah this sharing debacle sucks BUT it means that ya boy has finally gotten enough exposure to rouse one of YouTube's most ancient guilds... the pirates! :OOOO

Petr Čech

Video works well and cannot be played elsewhere. I even tried to extract link to the vimeo site and it told me I can't play it there. So this should do.

Gábor Engel

This is why we can't have nice things. 😢

Pscyking

Well today's biggest lesson was to trust you to choose interesting topics instead of hoping for more on Rome. As someone who only came to appreciate history a few years ago your videos are among the most entertaining, educational, and thorough.

Cyevi

So sorry to hear people aren't respecting the early release for patreons :( Will the video eventually be released on Youtube? I don't see a CC option for Vimeo and as a Hard of Hearing person, those captions really make a difference for me.

JustlookingCQ

Man... Thanks for coming out and addressing this. Remember what Caesar did to the pirates?

Historia Civilis

I'm sorry about that. Yes, this will eventually be on YouTube, as normal, with the option of subtitles. I just looked into how to do Vimeo subtitles, and... it's not good... you've gotta manually enter the timecodes for each chunk of text. I'll continue looking into it to see if there's a better option...

Historia Civilis

Figured it out! I was able to take take a subtitles file with automatically generated time stamps from the YouTube video, and upload it to Vimeo. The above video now has subtitles. I'll add a step into my little video uploading checklist, so going forward, the early access videos should have subtitles (after like a 3-4 hour delay... that's how long it usually takes to do the separate YouTube upload.) If I ever forget, please feel free to remind me, because now that I know how to do it it's not difficult at all.

Matthew Speidel

This is why we can't have nice things, folks.

Mohi Othman

The pirating sucks, but on a positive note this was easily the best video I've seen on the Bronze Age Collapse! Other videos tend to focus too much on the "mysterious sea people".

Boomuh

Wouldn’t they be able to just screen record it?

Akhil Mallavarapu

Thanks a lot! As another person who is hard of hearing this is much appreciated,

Oriskó Norbert

Sure, but that takes more effort. Far less people would go down that road.

Chris Hardy

The Vimeo video is basically unplayable for me. :( It pauses every 3 seconds or so but it looks like it's buffered enough that it should be smooth.

Rokey Doess

vimeo works fine for me'

Robert Watts

I had some buffering issues it like to stutter a little bit

Kevin Xu

I'd hit up EpicHistoryTv if you can't figure out Vimeo problems, he's been posting like that for a while now and his vids seem to run smoothly
