BOATS!

Yass queen been waiting on this

Tom (Gallalad)

Honestly the more I learn about him the more I find Augustus to be just a very shitty person

Kane Foreman

F*ck Augustus. All my homies hate Augustus

Brian Brock

He is sort of a dick. I remember listening to the Emperors of Rome podcast and one of the professors that really studied the era had a sort of visceral negative reaction to the guy. I am definitely starting to get it.

Ben Schreiber

I think that you can´t judge any historical character especially world leaders by modern standards

Andrzej Mendel-Nykorowycz

I got the feeling that the more he felt secure in his power, the better and more lenient ruler he became. Definitely a dick in the early years, but I can't fully blame him, seeing how the whole "not being a dick" approach by Julius Ceasar eventually turned out.

Patrick Siu

Caesar was a dick but he didn't want to look like one. That's why he got assassinated. Octavian knew that he had to be a dick until he didn't need to, and he was capable to be just that until he actually didn't need to. The moral of this story is "consistency". No matter what you want to be, consistency is the key to success.

There are many worse Emperors than Augustus lmao

Tom (Gallalad)

So a few have commented here. I should clarify this. I am not saying that there aren't worse Emperor's than Augustus or that Augustus wasn't working broadly within his timeframe. I was merely saying that, compared to the mythos built up around him as this all wise and capable ruler who founded a great empire. When you break it down he seems less and less so. Instead he just seems like a shitty person who got a mix of dumb luck and the right people around him.

Patrick Quinn

You know im not really a fan of the "great man" theory of history. Buck fuck if Julius Caesar isnt a good example of it, especially when you compare him to the people that followed in his wake.

Pluto

That whole 20 year period between 63 BC and 42 BC is just filled with great men, Cicero, Cato, Crassus, Pompey, Caesar, Clodius, Milo, Brutus, Lepidus, Cassius Labenius etc - I would probably say that period of time is one of the most extraordinary in terms of the qualities, achievements and capabilities of the individual man and it's not really something we see or have as well documented until probably the 18th century.

Peter Morales

I've just watched your whole channel catalog over again and I need the Antony video. I desperately need it.

Oriskó Norbert

Yeah, I started off like this about a year ago... at that time the last video was the Assassination of Caesar... sadly, I had to grow used to far less frequent updates xD But you can start reading the source material he is listing under the videos. I actually did that and I am soooo hooked on those as well :D

Derek Montes de Oca

Great video, question though. In this video you say "~We will later explore the separate problems that Mark Antony had to deal with.~" Does that video exist already? Thank you very much, keep up the great work!
