When Ty Lee met the Crown Prince for the first time, she was barely nine years old, Naruto had been twelve at the time but he was already gorgeous to the young girl. It wasn’t just his handsome and unusual looks or his incredible abilities and intelligence that had mesmerized her, it was his aura.

Naruto’s aura was a bright orange, warm, comforting, gentle, filled with positive emotions. Every time he entered a room, he was the only person she could see, and she felt her heart warm and her conscious ease. Every time Azula invited her, Ty Lee would find an excuse to search the Palace looking for Naruto just to get a glimpse of his comforting aura. Unfortunately, when she was eleven, she found him training, and she had been so hypnotized by his body, his crimson flames and his aura, that she had stayed there admiring him for almost an hour.

But Ty Lee was Azula’s friend, not Naruto’s, plus the Fire Princess was merciless with whomever tried to seduce her brother. Ty Lee had learned that lesson the very first time she met the Crown Prince.

As the years went on, the young noble girl quickly noticed Naruto’s incredible growth and the body he acquired after more than a decade of training. But Ty Lee was too shy to even try to speak to the boy of her dreams, she was afraid he’d find her weird or wouldn’t be interested in a girl that had six identical sisters. So for many years, she observed him from afar, only spoke to him when spoken to, and laughed with him in her dreams.

But when she was twelve, incredible things happened.

On that day, her father had come to court for another feast and had brought his wife and their seven daughters with him. Hoping that his girls would be able to make connection with heirs from noble families in order to extend his political influence by finding potential husbands. But what Ty Lee had predicted happened; no noble boy wanted to have the « same » girlfriend as any of his friends or rivals. So her and her sisters were quickly dismissed when their preys noticed how similar they all looked. Ty Lee had a bit more success than the others thanks to her friendship with Azula, but she didn’t actually try to know any of those boys. Especially since the only person they could talk about was the Fire Princess and they always called her by one of her sister’s name instead of her own.

Her father had been very disappointed in them when they all came back « empty handed », but Ty Lee didn’t really notice, the only thing she noticed was Naruto who was coming in their direction and she started to slightly hyperventilate.

When he saw the Crown Prince arrive, Ty Lee’s father quickly ordered his daughters to align themselves in order to greet him properly. Ty Lee almost screamed in agony when he did that, once again, she was going to be lost among replicas of herself, she would just be one sister among the others.

Naruto politely greeted her father and kissed her mother’s hand while she faked a giggle. Then… her father introduced all of his daughters to him. But the Crown Prince noticed that one them was very uncomfortable.

« Good evening ladies. » He greeted with a smile.

Then he focused on the one he actually knew.

« Hello Ty Lee, how have you been doing ? »

The noble girl paralyzed herself during a few seconds and her eyes popped out of their sockets. She looked around her to make sure that the blond was talking to her, and noticed that her sisters were staring at her with widen eyes filled with envy.

« Uh… I’m… Uh… » She stuttered without really knowing what to answer.

Fortunately, Naruto rescued her.

« Don’t worry about Azula. » He said in a reassuring tone. « She trained too hard and went straight to sleep. She won’t berate you for talking to me. »

« Oh ! I see… » Ty Lee cursed herself with her weak answer but she really didn’t know what to do or what to say !

Her six sisters were looking at her with envy, her father and mother looked prouder of her than they had ever been in her entire life ! That was too much pressure for her !

« May I offer you a drink ? » Naruto asked while grabbing her wrist.

Ty Lee’s eyes widen in horror and embarrassment while her heart skipped a beat and her cheeks burned like hell.

The blond did not wait for her answer and pulled her out of her family group to lead her to the buffet, where she breathed heavily in order to release all her stress.

« I’m really, really sorry. » Naruto apologized while he scratched the back of his head. « I didn’t want to make you uncomfortable. I just wanted to get away from the girls. »

Ty Lee exhaled loudly and looked at him in confusion.

« Which girls ? » She asked.

« All of them. » The Prince whispered in annoyance.

The twelve year old frowned at this and took a look around them. That’s when she noticed that all the noble girls of the country were looking at her with murderous envy. She lowered her head to look at the ground and realize her situation.

« I’m talking with the most coveted and handsome boy of the Fire Nation in front of the noblest girls and my own family. »

Ty Lee would have crumbled on herself had she been alone, but fortunately for her, Naruto didn’t let her drown in her own stress.

« Calm down. » He reassured with his adorable goofy smile. « None of these idiots can tell the difference between you and your sisters. And they’re all terrified of Azula. »

His smile melted Ty Lee’s heart in an instant, and when she realized he was holding her hands, she actually felt safe despite her unusual situation. She exhaled one more time in order to relax a bit.

« Wanna drink something ?» Naruto offered.

She nodded shyly and actually widen her eyes in surprise when her prince offered her a glass of grape juice while he settled for a cup of wine.

« How do you know I like grape juice ? »

The blond arched an eyebrow.

« That’s what you’ve always drank when you came to the palace. »

Ty Lee blushed a little bit before thanking her prince.
« So… » she said trying to make conversation. « Why did you want to talk to me ? »

Naruto simply shrugged.

« Well, I couldn’t tolerate those girls anymore. » He almost whined in an adorable manner to the young lady. « They kept laughing every time I opened my mouth and the only thing they could talk about was their father’s fortune or influence. Oh ! And did I mention that they couldn’t take their eyes off my butt and that they kept making excuses to grab my arms ? »

« No you’re not. » the blond frowned. « But even if you were, you were the only one that was looking at me as Naruto, not as the prince. So it was quite easy. »

Those words warmed the lady’s heart and she gave a grateful smile to the crimson eyed fire bender.
A detail made her chuckle though. « I’m sorry. » she said. « I think my dad will pester you with questions about our potential wedding when we get back to him. »

Naruto laughed out loud.

« How about we don’t get back to him, and it will be you he’ll pester. »

A small groan escaped the noble girl’s lips while her prince kept laughing.

« Just tell him I won’t consider marriage until my eighteenth birthday, that we’re just friends and that as Azula’s friend you have a much better chance to marry me than anyone else in this room. »

Ty Lee blushed an atomic red.

« But I won’t consider marrying a girl under the age of sixteen. » The fifteen year old boy said with a wink. « So you’ll be fine for a while. »

This time, it was a relieved sigh that escaped the lips of the young lady.

« Thanks Naruto. »

« No problem. » He said. « If you don’t mind me asking; I’ve never seen you as depressed as tonight. What is going on with you ? »

« Nothing… not really. » She answered in a sigh. « It’s just that… I hate being in public with my sisters… It’s like my identity is taken from me and I’m just one pretty face among others. »

The Crown Prince frowned a little and took a few seconds to think about it before shuddering.

« How about we spend the rest of the party together ? » He offered, Ty Lee couldn’t believe her ears. « That way you will be able to keep you identity and I won’t have to talk to any of those girls since I’ll be busy with you. »

The young noble girl was flabbergasted, the party had barely begun, Naruto basically asked her to spend the next five hours with him ! This was a dream coming true for Ty Lee !

« Are you sure you don’t mind ? » She politely asked even though she internally screamed in joy.

Naruto gave her his big and adorable goofy smile, she felt her cheeks melt and a dumbstruck smile appeared on her face.

« Since Azula isn’t here, they’ve been trying a lot harder to get me than usual, you can tell my sister you spend the evening with me for protection. » He advised. « It wouldn’t be a lie. » He added with a wink.

Ty Lee actually laughed, it was a real laugh, one that eased all the tension she felt on her shoulders.

Naruto laughed a little too before noticing something interesting.

« Plus, it looks like you did good promo for your sisters. »

Ty Lee followed his look, and realized that her sisters had indeed become the attraction of the party, now the most influent heirs of the Noble families were talking and laughing with them.

Naruto suddenly grabbed her hand.

« Let’s get out of here while everyone is busy. » He whispered. « I know a place where we’ll be alone. »

Ty Lee didn’t even have the chance to answer, her Prince pulled her out of the room with inhuman strength and she could only follow. He led her to… his personal chambers.

The noble girl opened her mouth and widened her eyes in horror when she realized where she was. There were mostly pictures of Naruto, Azula and Zuko all over the furnitures and walls. She noticed a few pictures of Lady Ursa and of Lord Iroh, but none of Fire Lord Ozai.

« N-Naruto ? » she stuttered. « People are gonna start rumors if they see us get in your room ! »

« Calm down. » The Prince said with his undefeated goofy smile. « We’ll just settle on the balcony where everyone can see us. Plus you’re twelve, if someone is disgusting enough to start a rumor, I’ll find him and burn his manhood or her face if it’s a woman. »

The way he spoke so casually of such violent actions suddenly reminded Ty Lee that Naruto was Azula’s brother. She gave in and went to sit on the balcony while her prince was retrieving food and beverage.

« I feel so much better. » Naruto admitted with a relived sigh while he filled a cup with grape juice and handed it to his guest. « We can finally speak casually without worrying about anyone else. »

Ty Lee didn’t really share his enthusiasm since she knew her father and sisters were going to pester her and rumors about her would spread nonetheless. Yet she allowed herself to enjoy the moment. She was about to spend an entire evening with the boy of her dreams, she understood that sacrifices were necessary.

« So… » Naruto said while he sat in front of her. « Care to tell me why you’ve been peeking on me ever since we’ve met ? »

Ty Lee immediately choked on her juice and started coughing while her host was giving her a mocking smile.

« Y-you… You noticed ?! » She almost shrieked in embarrassment.

Naruto shrugged a bit arrogantly.

« ‘Course I noticed. » He said. « At the beginning I didn’t really mind, since I assumed you were just a curious girl who wanted to know what the « Blessed Fire Prince » looked like. »

The mocking tone he used to say « Blessed Fire Prince » wasn’t lost on Ty Lee, apparently, Naruto hated that title.

« So tell me. » He insisted. « What was it that you found so interesting that you had to peep on me every chance you got. »

« I did not… Okay… I’ve peeped. » She admitted when she realized she didn’t have anything to prove her innocence. « It was your aura. »

Naruto frowned and tilted his head to the side. « My aura ? »

« Yes… I…uh… I can see people’s aura. » She revealed in a half-whisper.

Ty Lee closed her eyes and suddenly started to pray for Agni’s mercy. Every time she told someone about her unusual ability, she was either laughed at or categorized as insane. Naruto simply stared at her with a frown.

« And what’s so special about my aura ? » He asked with genuine interest.

Ty Lee reopened her eyes and took a bit of time to find the courage to speak.

« Well… Your aura is… orange. » She said trying not to look ridiculous. « It’s… Well it’s warm and comforting… Filled with love and positive emotions… It has a… » She coughs. « It has a crimson red heart… As if you were burying something violent under all this beautiful energy. I… uh… I’ve always found it fascinating. »

She refrained from telling him that she had started to look at more than just his aura for a few months.

Naruto scratched his chin in wonder for a few seconds before he said :

« I believe you. »

Ty Lee’s eyes popped out of their sockets, she couldn’t believe it.

« No one knows orange is my favorite color. » He blushed while scratching the back of his head. « Not even Azula. She wouldn’t let me hear the end of it if she knew. So yeah, Ty Lee, I believe you. »

Ty Lee felt joy fill her heart ! Finally, someone other than her mother believed her, and it was Naruto of all people ! More than that, she actually made him blush ! He was so cute !

« So tell me. » The Crown Prince said with interest. « What can you tell from a person’s aura ? »

A mischievous smile appeared on the young girl’s face.

« Well… if someone’s aura is circled by a white ribbon, it means this person has a crush. »

Naruto arched an eyebrow in disbelief.

« Seriously ? »

Ty Lee nodded.

« And if the ribbon is golden, it means the person is in love. »

That was more than enough to captivate Naruto’s full attention, he pointed the party in full swing downstairs.

After the party ended, Ty Lee was congratulated by her parents and pestered by her sisters for the rest of the evening, but she simply told them all that her prince asked her not to reveal the details of their conversations.

After this party, Ty Lee and Naruto’s relationship evolved from acquaintances to friends. Naruto always greeted her with his big goofy smile every time he saw her, and Ty Lee always took the time to share a cup of tea with him when she visited the palace.

Their relationship evolved again after Zuko’s banishment, the noble girl quickly realized how devastated the blond was thanks to his distressed aura. After many efforts, she managed to crack his nutshell open, and Naruto cried in her arms. They became even closer over the years, but when Ty Lee became fourteen, she noticed a white ribbon around her friend’s aura and immediately confronted Naruto about it for she was dying to learn some juicy details. But the blond refused to answer her questions, and now that the girl thought about it, it was probably for the best. Sure, it was just a crush but she couldn’t help the jealousy, maybe she would have snitched the girl’s identity to Azula out of jealousy, now that would have been awful for everyone.

A few months after her fourteenth birthday, Ty Lee grew tired of the life in the capital. Her father expected her to marry Naruto, but she knew that this would never, ever happen. Plus, despite her feelings and attraction for her prince, she couldn’t possibly imagine spending her whole life as Fire Lady. She was a free soul who wanted to live a free life where she could fully blossom. She and Naruto always talked about the travels they’d make around the world, that was the kind of life she wanted.

So when the greatest circus of the Fire Nation was about to depart for the colonies in the Earth Kingdom, she managed to get herself hired as an acrobat and would be sailing to the colonies on the next day.

But before that, she wanted to say goodbye to her friends for she didn’t know when she’d see them again.

Mai and Azula reacted as she expected; they were both dismayed by her fantasies but wished her luck nonetheless.

Then came Naruto’s turn, and Ty Lee apprehended a little their conversation.

She took a few minutes to look at all the pictures in the room and couldn’t help but chuckle in adoration when she saw a paint of Naruto with Azula on his shoulders when they were little. Ty Lee had never seen her friend as happy and full of life as she was on this picture.

It was when she was admiring a painting of Naruto holding a baby Azula that she noticed the book that was abandoned on the dresser. She read the title out of curiosity and her eyes widen in surprise.
