Hey all! I just wanted to ask your opinion on file size and types when it comes to maps! As you know, I have been making larger and more detailed maps and admittedly it is QUITE difficult to keep file size down as a result.

Here I have a few choices!

  • Keep as it is, 140ppi JPGs

  • Reduce to 100ppi JPGs

  • Offer JPGs and WEBP

  • Just transition to WEBP

I don’t want webp as I cannot use such files for the programs that I use for TTRPGs

Noted! This is why I wanted to ask - my friend BirdieMaps exclusively does WEBP as they usually make 50x50+ maps like me and idk where my community sits with that :)

NOTE: Patreon decided to bug at the point of me posting the poll - it WAS going to be multiple choice but that got denied - feel free to comment :)

What about Png ? (Better quality than jpg, but not that much heavier)

What happens if you just export the jpg in multiple quality levels rather than rescaling the PPI? Does it blur things too much? It seems like this would be easy to do.

I primarily use 100ppi for use in roll20, but I can use webp if that is easier for you. Larger file sizes are unsuitable for VTT, but I understand the need for them for print. Other Patreons I back usually do three releases, a 100ppi for roll20, a 140ppi for foundary and a hi res print version. Hope that helps.
