Clean is the one that sneaks up on you.

liv requested this one, and it turned out to be the perfect ask. You go into 1989 expecting synths and neon and city lights, and then the last track quietly sits you down and asks how you're actually doing. Taylor wrote it with Imogen Heap and you can hear it — no big drums, no chorus that explodes, just this steady rain of a song about being on the other side of something that nearly took you under.

The whole thing runs on two pictures. The drought that ends. And getting sober from a person. Both of them land the same way: you don't get clean in one dramatic moment, you get clean slowly and then one day you notice it happened.

liv, thank you. You picked the one that gets people.

If this song carried you through something, tell us in the comments. Those stories are honestly the best part of doing this — we read every one of them.

Blue Pill and The Chosen, your monthly reaction requests are open. Somebody else's Clean is sitting in that list right now waiting for us to find it.

Love you, Cronicans.— Kyle & Alanna

“Ten months sober I must admit, just because you’re clean, don’t mean you don’t miss it” is such a real thing for anyone who’s struggled with addiction. All the live versions of Clean are powerful but my favorite is on the Rep tour when she gives the speech after she won sexual assault lawsuit, when she tells any victim who was never believed that she is sorry and then plays Clean, it’s so moving 🫶

The reason this song sounds so different from the rest of 1989. It was written and only produced by Taylor and Imogen. She also came back for the Taylor's version re recording. it's the only song they have together and it came about because Taylor spoke about Imogen being a dream collab. She has a great story about how it came to be in her 1989 Grammy Museum discussion and performance. She talks about the songs on 1989 here https://youtu.be/dHmcF5zW5_A?si=PDywkRHSBb4QMkr3

I love this song. It means a lot to me. I'm an I.T. tech for vacation rental companies, and back at the end of Dec of 2023, I had a service call at a condo some J-1 guys were renting, and they were from Brazil (Taylor just had the Eras Tour there). I fixed their WiFi problem, and as I was chatting with them before leaving, and found out they were indeed from Brazil, so I asked them the obvious question, "Is Taylor really as big of a deal there as I'm seeing on the news?" They looked at each other, looked back at me and said, "there are 2 things in Brazil we take VERY serious, Taylor Swift and Futball. We take both very serious." I told them about how I've watched all but 1 of the livestreams, and they looked at me puzzled. You see, I'm older, and in THEIR mind, I don't really fit into her demographic. They were shocked when I told them I had ALL of her albums (yes ALL OF THEM) and they asked me what my favorite song of hers was. I said "that's tough, I can tell you my favorite from each album, Debut would be Picture to Burn"... Fearless, probably Love Story (I'm a hopeful romantic) Speak Now would be" and they stopped me and said "no, no, no, your VERY favorite." I paused and said "if I have to choose one... Clean" They looked at each other and said "we've never heard of that one." I smiled and said, "it's more of a deep cut from her 1989 album. It's about finally cleansing yourself of a troubled relationship. Similar to what I went through with my divorce" They smiled and said "I'll go look for it, thanks"

Thanks for the reaction. You might also recognize "Clean" from the Miss Americana documentary. She performed it on the anniversary of the sexual abuse decision.

Omg someone needs to request the Grammy museum stuff cause can't afford the tier to request stuff. Only if one of you wants it also obviously. But Kyle and Alanna there is this Grammy museum thing that was amazing where she talks about making some of the songs and even has videos and recordings of them making them and then she does these AMAZING performances of some of the songs but in a way that she's never played them before. This song was actually done with Imogen Heap not Jack. And the instrument they use is so cool it was something taylor had never even seen before so if you guys watch it you gotta watch the whole thing not just the performances. It's one of my favorite moments of Taylor 🖤🫶

This song isn’t produced by Jack, just Taylor and an artist called Imogen Heap! It’s one of my favorites from 1989 ! ❤️
