Cronicans — this is the the official start of Mango Mondays! Every Monday, 6PM PDT.

Valeria Marquez was 23. A model, an entrepreneur, and the owner of Blossom The Beauty Lounge in Zapopan, Jalisco. On May 13, 2025, she was livestreaming from her own salon when a man walked in and shot her. More than fifteen thousand people were watching it happen in real time.

Rotten Mango doesn't show the shooting, so nothing in this is graphic. What you do get is the hour before it, which is somehow worse.

Two names run through the whole case and the episode walks both of them.

Érika worked at the salon and was there when it happened. She appears on the livestream minutes before the attack, and she's the one who turned the phone off after the shots. She gave her statement as a witness and was among the first people talking to police.

Vivian de la Torre was Valeria's close friend. During the stream, Valeria tells her audience that Vivian is sending a gift and wants her to stay and receive it personally. A Starbucks order arrives. Then a second delivery — a pink plush pig. Valeria puts it in her lap and smiles. Earlier on that same stream she'd already told viewers that two men had come by asking for her, and she said out loud that she was worried they were going to kill her.

Where it stands as of August 2026: two men are in custody. Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, "El R1," is accused of ordering the killing at the request of his son Francisco Álvarez Solorio, Valeria's ex-partner. Iván Martín "N" was arrested as an alleged co-perpetrator. On August 6, the Jalisco attorney general confirmed Vivian and Érika are both still in the investigation file as witnesses, said he can't rule anything out, and said two or three more people could still be involved. Neither woman has been charged with anything. Érika's lawyers say she's been harassed and threatened online over how she reacted in the moment.

That's the honest state of it. Two arrests, an open file, and nobody able to say the last word yet.

Now our part, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. We watched the arrests, we read where the case actually is, and neither of us could put down the thing that bothered us at the start. The gift. The insistence that she stay for it. The timing.

We are not accusing anybody. We can't and we won't. But we got to the end of it and looked at each other and neither of us was settled.

So here's what we want from you, and we want the real answer, not the kind one.

Does it make us bad people that we still can't let go of a theory the evidence hasn't backed? Two men are in custody. A prosecutor has named an ex-boyfriend and his father. And we're sitting here thinking about a plush pig.

Is that instinct, or is that us doing the exact thing the internet did to Érika? Because from the inside those two feel identical and we honestly can't tell which one we're doing.

Tell us in the comments. We'd rather you tell us we're wrong than keep thinking it quietly.

Love you, Cronicans.— Kyle & Alanna

Another update which is quite recent i think but her ex and the son who supposedly hired the killing gave an interview stating he didn't have any involvemnt. But has now been arrested i think.
