Might sound like a cop out but I believe each one has a time and place to be used. 1st person for sections focused on the experiences of a character, 3rd for sections focused on progressing a story.

3rd person limited vs. 3rd person omniscient is also a consideration. I personally like 3PO for scene set-ups with a transition to 3PL for the actual scene content/interactions. And 3PL seems better for showing a character's perspective than first person. Though I do like first person for unhinged characters. Especially if they talk to themselves/hear voices. Osborn as the Green Goblin, Smeagle/Gollum write their perspective in first person well, and write all the other characters perspectives from 3PL and you can really sell the unhinged nature in the contrast of the narrative structure as much as the content of the narrative itself
