January & February 2025 Work Log (Patreon)
Content
Hey everyone! Since I didn't write a work log for January, here's everything I worked on in January and February, exclusively for patrons.
Most of my recent development work has gone towards the security and privacy checkup, which is roughly halfway finished. When it's complete, I'll publish the full results in its own non-exclusive post.
Nexus Tools
Nexus Tools now has a full Privacy Policy, explaining that some limited analytics is collected during the install process to help with development and bug testing. I also removed public access to the Plausible analytics dashboard, which I had previously enabled for full transparency about data collection, but that's probably doing more harm than good.
ImageShare
I worked on a few minor improvements for ImageShare, which are already live on the main production site, and will soon be included in a v3.1 update for self-hosting.
First, ImageShare now adds the correct file extension to files uploaded without one, as long as the browser provides a MIME type during upload. This mainly affects classic Mac OS and other platforms that didn't always use file extensions. However, web browsers on those platforms don't always provide the correct MIME type, so you'll still need to add an extension before uploading (or add one to the downloaded file) for the best results.
Second, ImageShare now has a 'Mobile mode' link in the footer that forces the small-screen mobile interface—the same one already used for Nintendo 3DS and KaiOS phones. You can also visit theimageshare.com/m directly. It works great on the Opera and Internet Explorer browsers on my Windows Mobile 6.5 phone, which don't support CSS media queries and can't switch to the small screen interface automatically.
There's also ongoing work from another developer to bring back Imgur support in ImageShare and fixing some other bugs. I'm hoping to merge those changes soon, possibly with a few more bug fixes, and pack it all into a v3.1 update.
Link Cleaner
Link Cleaner can now clean product page links from Best Buy and Walmart, and there's now a share button for Bluesky on the result page. Clicking it opens the post compose window with the cleaned pasted into the text.
Link Cleaner had one functionality change for the security checkup: the link history page has been removed. There wasn't many people using it, or even knew it was there, and it could theoretically give someone with access to your browser a limited view of your recent web activity—even after your web browser's history was cleared. This update also deletes the local history database if it's present.
On that note, Link Cleaner also now has a full Privacy Policy. No big surprises here: your links are still not shared anywhere during cleaning, and it's using the same privacy-preserving Plausible Analytics as my other software.
At some point, I would like to do a full interface update for Link Cleaner that fixes the back-and-forth navigation for repeated clean links, and adds instructions that explain all the ways to use and install Link Cleaner. It could also have the same theme switcher as PhotoStack. It will be a while before I get to any of that, though.
Snappy
I haven't really worked on Snappy since its release in June 2023. It's a web-based automatic screenshot tool, allowing you to save images of browser tabs, app windows, or your screen on an interval. It now has light and dark modes, with the same theme switcher menu as PhotoStack, as well as some minor interface updates.
Annoyingly, Chromium is still the only web browser engine that has fully implemented the File System API, so Snappy can still only save images to a specific folder in Chrome and Chrome-based browsers. Snappy also now has a Privacy Policy.
The Spacebar
I published two articles on The Spacebar in January and February:
I missed out on 3D movies, but they're back in VR
The flip phone web: browsing with the original Opera Mini
