April 2026 Work Log (Patreon)
Content
Hello again! Here's everything I worked on during the month of April, exclusively for Patreon supporters.
ImageShare
This month, I worked on the next major update ImageShare, my Node.js-based web app for transferring images and video from low-end and legacy web browsers. The priority is still code cleanup, better stability, and improved security, but I did want to get a few new features in as well.
Much of the work is going into modularization. More of the functions for temporary file hosting (the only option on theimageshare.com) and Imgur uploads are now in their respective separate modules, and all of the page rendering code has been moved to EJS templates. There are also more (and better) comments everywhere, and some variables have been renamed or combined for easier understanding. Also, I also removed the axios and form-data libraries as dependencies.
Moving onto new features, the Imgur upload option now allows all file formats supported by Imgur. That includes GIF, APNG, TIFF, MP4, WebM, MKV, MOV, FLV, AVI, WMV, and MPEG files, in addition to the JPEG and PNG files that already worked. Unfortunately, Imgur is still blocking the IP address of the main server, so this is still only an option for self-hosted configurations.
I also worked on better support for the PlayStation Vita handheld gaming console, and its strange set-top box equivalent, the PlayStation TV. Those consoles have web browsers that support file upload, and ImageShare already worked to some extent. I wanted to see if game title detection was possible from game screenshots, like ImageShare does for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, but I don't own a Vita.
Thankfully, my call for help on Reddit, Bluesky, and Mastodon was answered, and I received sample images from Vita and Vita TV owners. The community-maintained PlayStation Developer Wiki also had some helpful information.
I learned that the Vita and Vita TV save images in either PNG or JPEG format, but neither format seems to contain any information about the captured game. The PNG screenshots have no metadata at all, but the JPEG screenshots and JPEG camera photos contain "Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc." as the camera make and "PlayStation(R)Vita" as the camera model. That's similar to images from the Nintendo 3DS, which have Nintendo as the make and Nintendo 3DS as the model. Interestingly, JPEG screenshots from the PS TV also have a Software tag containing 3.68, which I believe is the system firmware version.
For all Vita/PSTV saved images, ImageShare now applies "Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc." as the camera make and "PlayStation(R)Vita" as the camera model. That way, you'll at least be able to search for "Sony" or "Vita" in your photo library to find those images. ImageShare detects those screenshots using two variables: the exact dimensions of 960x544, and the string "PlayStation Vita" in the browser's user agent.
The in-progress update is already live on theimageshare.com, and once a few more changes are added and fully tested, it will be marked as a release.
Just the Browser
There was one minor update for my Just the Browser project in April. GitHub user moschlar submitted a fix for detecting Chromium installed from Debian Linux repositories.
The Spacebar
I published one new article on The Spacebar in April, about setting up and using the Ghostty terminal. I also updated my How to use the Galaxy XR with PC VR and VRChat guide with additional steps for fixing microphone problems.
