Hello, friends, here's the latest in the NES Works lineup. I realize I'm posting it at a weird hour; I'm on the wrong side of the planet, and this is the first time I've had access to a decent online connection since completing the video. So... uh, good morning? After you wake up?

Please enjoy this video look at Chubby Cherub. I wanted to hate this game like a good NES fan, but it's actually not terrible. Terribly flawed, yes, but nowhere near as bad as the games on either side of it.

Chubby Cherub retrospective: Fallen angel | NES Works #028

The NES's second third-party release came to us courtesy of the same companies behind M.U.S.C.L.E., but thankfully it wasn't quite so dire. It's certainly not great, but there seems to have been a modicum of competence and even creativity behind it — this, despite its basis in another anime license.

No mention of the awful racial stereotype of one of the kids you save? Or did you not make it that far? (Which I can't blame you for not doing) Also did you borrow a copy of Chubby Cherub for the photo shoot? It's quite a rare game CIB. Maybe you could hate it for being one of those inexplicably rare games?

I didn't get to the stereotype, but I have a hard time getting upset when that sort of thing appears in a Japanese game of this vintage. Their cultural awareness of how offensive those things are just didn't exist back then. They were working from what they saw in imported American media, which still had plenty of overt racism in it.
