It just wouldn't be October without a Castlevania video around here. Fortunately, I had one coming up in the queue for evaluation... or rather, reevaluation. Yes, it's Castlevania: The Adventure, a game I last tackled about a decade ago. I would like to say that time has softened my views on this game, but I was always taught not to be a liar. However, I did try to avoid repeating myself here and found new things to explore... mainly surrounding context stuff. As is my way now, I'm afraid.

DMG-CV [Dracula's Mobile Grind]: Castlevania The Adventure | Game Boy Works Vol.2 005

I had hoped that revisiting Castlevania: The Adventure again a decade after I first covered the title on Game Boy World would shed some new light on it and perhaps soften my opinion on this portable take on a NES mainstay. Spoilers: It did not. However, I will say that I can better appreciate how much of a step forward for portable gaming ambition Castlevania: The Adventure represented at the time. It's a busted mess that demands you play the entire thing exactly one way with zero deviations from the optimal path and timing, yes, but it still looked and played way better than anything available at the time in handheld form. When your competition is the Tiger Simon's Quest LCD Game & Watch clone, it's hard not to come away looking pretty damn good. Production notes: But why watch when you can read? Check out the massive hardcover print editions of NES Works, Super NES Works, Virtual Boy Works, and Segaiden are available now at Limited Run Games (https://limitedrungames.com/collections/books)! SG-1000 Works: Segaiden Vol. I is available NOW, and Metroidvania: The First Decade is due in 2024 or ’25. Game Boy footage captured from Super Game Boy 2 in RGB from Analogue Super Nt. 6:22 - Castlevania The Adventure Rebirth needs an updated lower thirds entry, this one lists as for Gameboy and should be Wii with revised dates.

Still an October tradition for me to play through at least the first level every year (for vibe purposes only)

Yup. Same. Played this game on my friend’s game boy and was like nope I’m good. Didn’t get a game boy until Links Awakening.
