I won't be spending a HUGE amount of time at once on any of the sidebar also-rans of the late ’80s, so even if you have no interest in latter-day Intellivision, you need only wait until next week to get back to the juicy Sega and Nintendo stuff for a while. But you should be interested in Intellivision! It's an interesting little sidebar to the Nintendo and Sega history everyone already knows. Don't take my word for it, check out this video... which contains about 2500 of my words. So I guess I am asking you to take my word for it, at that.

Thunderstruck: Championship Tennis / World Cup Soccer / Thunder Castle | NES Works Gaiden 73

A second INTV-era Intellivision video? How could you be so blessed?! No, but seriously, this episode is capped by the genuinely cool maze-action title Thunder Castle... and even the sports games are interesting thanks to their connection to Mattel's short-lived European branch. These carts really do feel like transitional pieces between two era, resetting the business while keeping the console... well, if not precisely ALIVE, then certainly present. You can learn more about the Intellivision's history during the INTV days by preordering The NES Era Vol. III: NES and the Peak of 8-Bit, a comprehensive photographic atlas of every console game released for NES and its competitors—including the Intellivision—at the height of their power, from January 1988 through the advent of 16-bit systems in August 1989. Take a deep dive into the prehistory of NES with this limited-edition oversized (12x12"!) photo book: https://limitedrungames.com/products/the-nes-era-vol-3-hardcover Production notes: Video Works is funded via Patreon (http://www.patreon.com/gamespite) — support the show and get access to every episode up to two weeks in advance of its YouTube debut! Plus, exclusive podcasts, eBooks, and more! Intellivision footage captured from original hardware (Intellivision II modded for S-video output). NES footage captured from Analogue Nt Mini. Video upscaled to 4K with RetroTink 4X.

I'm going to be so very stupidly happy if the "return to Nintendo/Sega" means IT'S only NES game is next week

There's something about Thunder Castle that just *gels* with my lizard brain, maybe it's from growing up with Adventure and Pac-Man and D&D but it just resonates with me like some kind of core memory even though I've never played it.

Hurrah, my favorite Intellivision game gets its moment in the sun! (Hint: not a sports game).
