Here's something of a first for this project: the first time my chronological journey through American game systems has reached the point where an older system is supplanted by a new one from the same manufacturer. Sure, I've looked at the launches for Super NES, N64, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance (and Virtual Boy, I guess), but not in proper chronological sequence. I regrettably skipped ahead on all of those. But here on Segaiden, the SG-1000/Mark III/Master System has finally arrived at the point at which Sega's own replacement is about to land in the U.S. and make the older machine obsolete.

Funnily enough, both of these games make a pretty solid case for Master System sticking around. After months of choppy and wildly variable quality, these games are... good! At the same time, though, they do represent a sort of dropping of the pin in video game history by embodying a lot of what has come up until this point—i.e., a summation of 8-bit console gaming to pave the way for 16-bit machines. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into it?

Also, please be mindful of the flashing lights in the Wanted segment. It's a bit intense.

Journey's end to the west: Cloud Master & Wanted | Segaiden 086

Well, folks, this is it. For a certain value of "it." In this case, "it" being the Master System's time as Sega's only console available for purchase in America. The 16-bit era is about to dawn. The arrival of the Genesis doesn't spell the end of the Master System's life by any means, and the older console still has some impressive releases in the pipeline. Nevertheless, Cloud Master and Wanted do offer a pretty tidy summation of everything that has come to this point—a capstone for the Master System. Please support this channel by buying books—by me! I see you've finally given the Sega Visions segments the (lack of) respect they deserve. Which I suppose is the point compared to Nintendo's glorious propaganda publication.

Sega Challenge was the equivalent of the Fun Club News and was no more or less substantial than Nintendo's freebie. Once we get to the ACTUAL Sega Visions, there'll be a bit more to say.

On the subject of new consoles coming out: Do you intend to start on Genesis anytime soon, to complete the Master System's library, or something else? In the long run, I'll be more than happy to watch whatever ends up coming out but your comments about Sega's new console launch piqued my interest.

I dunno.. I feel like these videos might have more impact if you could, say, compare versions of Altered Beast in short order, you know?
