Three games about shooting stuff in space this week. I wish I could send these games into space, and then shoot them. They're not good, you see. Ah well! Only four more episodes until I hit the end of NES Works Gaiden 1985 and can move along to more interesting things. The early Famicom journey has been fun, but whew, you can really see that the consistency of quality dropped off a steep cliff after Super Mario Bros. hit. Thanks for suffering through it all here with me.

Robots! They're cool, right? Oh, my dear, sweet, summer child, this episode will disabuse you of that notion. I blame dbSoft. Volguard II manages to be somehow too simplistic yet too over-designed. Macross simplifies a portion of the most complex cartoon drama to air on American television in the 1980s down to a repetitive loop of shooting and transforming into a robot and then regretting your transformation because it drags the fun factor down to zero and immediately transforming back into a fighter. And Galg doesn't actually involve robots, but it does involve shooting, and it somehow manages to be the most inappropriately demanding and repetitive game on offer here. Anyway, don't play these games. Macross never being localised still confuses the heck out of me. I assume it was because of the usual Robotech / Harmony Gold licensing flareups, but you'd think someone would have just slapped a new title screen on it and shipped it over to the NES. Then again, no one bothered to localise either of the awful Transformers Famicom games, either... (Also, Lisa over Minmei all day. Rick was a moron.)

TO START PUSH That says it all, honestly.

Mystery of Convoy would have crashed the U.S. video game market all over again.
