Here it is, at long last: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXu9xjTVHCk

This video is a special one. I think Cersei is one of GRRM's best characters, because she's so terrible, but also so deserving of sympathy. Ever since reading Feast, I've wanted to try to articulate her story. And I took a lot of time making this vid because I wanted to do it right. I think this video does it right – and I hope you enjoy it!

This is a pre-release version just for Patrons. The public version will have acknowledgements at the end, and possibly an Audible ad. But the actual content will be the same, and I wanted to get it to you guys as soon as possible.

With Cersei done, we have time for one more video before GOT S7 – will post some topic ideas soon (:

Thanks so much for your support!

Sooooo good! I'm so glad I could support this work.

Kelly Theobald

This is amazing!! Bravo to you for such a great explanation. Bravo to GRRM for coming up with this (if this is really how it goes down--but it fits so perfectly, it has to happen like this). Bravo to everyone who figured all this out. My other favorite revelation is when you said perhaps Cersei doesn't love Jaime; Cersei loves Cersei. Awesome, and now the cogs in my lil brain-box are turning. Woo for that contradiction part!! Also, I liked the lengthy pause at the end--I needed a moment to just take it in.

Chad Houy

That lived up to the hype. Great fucking video, Shift.

Paul Vahur

I think I found an error. At 8:08 you say that Cersei murdered Olenna in the show. That is not true - last time we saw her, she is Dorne making a pact with Sand Snakes and Varys.

GemmaG

He knows and will correct before posting on yt. Its in the comments on the vid

Great job, Shift!

Thee Stevie Franchise

Excellent work, Alt-Shift, far and away the one I like the most. All the added time, research, and attention to your process pays off tenfold. Thanks for the hard work and entertainment. Now, Death to Cersei!!

Paul Barry

Good job man; loved it. You made the character I like least even more dislikable! If it really goes down that way, that'll be a helluva chapter. Wonder whose PoV it'll be from?

Hairless Oyster

Raawww, I'm gonna give it to ya, No Trivia, Raw like Cocaine straight from Bolivia..... I enjoyed that way more then the time my kidneys stopped working. Tantric, and beautiful. Great work. Truly.

Laura Carr

You're amazing, Shift. Thanks for pushing your technology/technique up to 11 for this one.

Thijs Wolters

Excellent. Watched it twice already. I admire your eye for detail. The screenshot of Cersei standing on the Neck and Jaime near the Fingers, very well spotted.

Otter

Great video! One of my top three shift videos for sure. The way you put together a plausible end to her story was fantastic!

Alt Shift X

Thanks for all the wonderful feedback, guys! Really glad you like the vid.

Tripodski

Wow - amazing.. Great work as usual Shift.

Alice Cottrell

Cersei may not be very likable, but ASOIAF would be much less interesting without her. Thanks for another great (maybe even your greatest so far) video :-)

GoKate206

Great job on the video, she is one of my favorite characters and I loved your deep dive.

Leonardo Traverzo

Fantastic job on the video one of the best and I love how you highlight the complex nature of Cersei

Rikke Holmberg

Oh, you certainly did it right! I just came back here again to watch this video for the third time. I think I had to let it sink in a bit, before I could say more than wow. Cersei is a truly fascinating and complex character, and this video makes me feel like I understand her for the first time. The way you tell her story here is just beautiful. You really GET her. And you speak with a raw emotion in your voice, that makes me feel sympathy for this woman in so many ways. It makes me feel that YOU have sympathy for her. I literally have chills running down my spine watching this. It somehow feels different from your other videos, and it is obvious that this project has a special place in your heart. The graphics, the composition, the amount of details is just mindblowing. This is without a doubt the best video you ever made. It is on a totally different level compared to your other videos. This, Mr Shift, is a work of art.

Tyler Wise

Wonderful video Alt Shift! I can tell you worked your ass off on it, and it more than pays off. By emphasizing the motives and reasons behind Cersei's actions and treatment of others, You showed that while Cersei is not the most liked character in ASOIAF, it is possible to come to appreciate everything she is. Great work and Thanks.

Alt Shift X

Thank you for the high praise, Rikke! Glad you enjoyed.

Alt Shift X

Thanks Tyler! Yeah that's what I was going for (:

Jennifer Grasso

Great video. But no matter how people break Cersei down, I will never sympathize with her. A sociopath at the age of 10 and she just keeps getting worse with age. Just sucks that the show makes Jaime a little bitch who keeps coming back to her, even when he knows she's the reason his remaining child's suicide.

Alt Shift X

Yeah I hear you. If it weren't for that one fact – that Cersei, at age ten, murdered Melara – I think you could make a compelling argument that Cersei's cruelty and awfulness is largely a result of her life experiences. But since she was a killer so young... perhaps she was just born bad. I guess it's that old nature/nurture thing, eh.

Rikke Holmberg

Even at 10 she would already have been influenced by the way Tywin thinks: Only Lannisters matter. Cersei would have seen killing Melara as self defence. (Like Arya when she killed the stable boy, also at 10?) And the fact that many years later she is still haunted by Melara's screaming in the well, to me indicates that this was more the act of a desperate child trying to live up to her father's standard, than that of a cold and merciless sociopath? But I agree with you on Jaimes arc being much more interesting in the books.

Jennifer Grasso

My point wasn't really about Cersei at age 10. More like she's been fucking shit up for others her whole life. And even though she has struggled as a woman, she has no empathy for other women, especially when she just sends them off to Qyburn. There's no coming back from that. I just cannot sympathize with Cersei, regardless of her childhood and marriage.

Rikke Holmberg

And all her life, people have been fucking shit up for her. From whom would she have learned empathy? The only person who seems to have truly loved her for what she is, has been Jaime, and their relationship is secret and forbidden. (And in the books she is clearly loosing even that.) I am of course in no way defending the horrific and absolutely inexcusible acts of Cersei Lannister. But I think GRRM (and Alt in this video) does a very good job of explaining and clarifying what caused her to be this way.

Kaitlyn

I don't think Cersei is suppose to be sympathetic. I think we're suppose to dislike her. But I think we can still dislike Cersei and also understand why she is the way she is.
