A big challenge of the Cersei video was that there's such a huge amount of content to cover with her – thousands of words from her POV and others, all throughout the series.

With Rhaegar, there's the opposite problem – despite his massive importance, Rhaegar is mentioned only occasionally throughout the series. The only really substantial bits we get about him are:

Some memories from Ned in AGOT

Dany's Undying vision in ACOK

Barristan's descriptions of Rhaegar in ASOS

Cersei's memories of Rhaegar in AFFC

Aemon's talk of Rhaegar and prophecy in AFFC

Description of Rhaegar's political machinations in TWOIAF

Each of these present a very different perspective on Rhaegar – and the challenge of this video is to fit these puzzle pieces together in a way that makes sense. Since there's so little textual evidence to work with, a lot of this will be guesswork and speculation.

There are a lot of cool possibilities. Did Rhaegar run off with Lyanna in an attempt to fulfil the Azor Ahai prophecy? Were Rhaegar and Lyanna in love? Did Rhaegar and Lyanna secretly marry? Was Rhaegar plotting to usurp his father King Aerys? Those are some of the questions we'll try to answer.

Hoping to finish this vid before Season 7 – if time runs out, maybe a release during S7 would make sense. Will keep you posted!

Thanks

It seems as those mentions of Rhaegar tell more about the people who do the remembering (from 10+ years) rather than about Rhaegar...

Alex

You picked up another nice challenge with Rhaegar vid! But I'm pretty sure that if it'll be out during the Season is going to be even better...

No worries, Shift, Take all the time you need, mate. We won't want your fingers to be in too many (Frey) pies!

Rikke Holmberg

Good things come to those who wait :)

Another challenging vid with Rhaegar, love it. Thanks for focusing on the big topics <3. From the bullet point list, Jaime's dream isn't mentioned: the one that made him turn back to save Brienne from the bear. It's easily one of my favorite scenes in all of ASOIAF, please include it in the video!

Rheagar is so fascinating, maybe is just because we know so little about him. I'm very excited for this future video. Don't worry, we understand that the quality of your work requires time. We'll wait.

Reverend Xandria

Such a fascinating & mysterious character! Most excited for this one!

Hairless Oyster

That. Is my favorite GoT related artwork. I need to save up and get a print for my wall. The way Bobby Whoreslammer is standing tall with that ridiculous helm. So fuckin good. Be Well

Cheers Calin! Yeah I do love that Jaime dream, though honestly I don't think it tells us much about Rhaegar.. I'll try to work it into the vid somehow (:

Alt Shift X

Me too, Xandria! Thanks for your support (:

Hmm, you know, Jaime's dream could make a great short video sometime! It's fascinating and there's a lot in it to theorize about.

Yeah I totally agree. To Cersei, Rhaegar represents romantic rejection. To Barristan, Rhaegar represents a failure to meet his duty. To Dany, Rhaegar represents a vague Targaryen ideal. But who is the real Rhaegar, behind all these idealisations and romanticisations?

Otter

Rhaegar is all about doing what's right - see how he gave up being scholarly because he felt he "must" be a warrior. Which is so tragic. Because at the tourney, he saw how Lyanna defended Howland and fell in love with her. It's interesting to speculate that he did something dishonorable - taking Lyanna and cheating on his wife - because he admired all that was noble and good about Lyanna. That's "the human heart in conflict with itself," isn't it? And it adds a deeper connection between Rhaegar and Lyanna. I know you touched on this in the Knight of the Laughing Tree video, but I think there's a lot of unexplored conflict inside Rhaegar that'd be cool to see in the video.

Kaitlyn

If you're gonna talk about Rhaegar's relationship with Lyanna, I think you should also speculate whether Rhaegar was genuinely in love with her, or if he was just using her to get a third child to fulfill the prince that was promised prophecy. Were Lyanna & Rhaegar star-crossed lovers, or was Rhaegar just manipulating a girl that really loved him?

Stephanie M

Whether Rhaeger took Lyanna to fulfill a prophecy, for love, for lust, or combination of I would imagine Elia wouldn't resent him. The Dornish are more open about sexuality and aren't as prejudiced as the west Westeros is towards bastards. Elia's fragile health wouldn't allow her to bear more children. Targaryens historically practicing polygamy could be used to justify a secret marriage of Rhaeger to Lyanna in front of a heart tree, making any potential offspring legitimate heirs not bastards. Elia may have accepted or encouraged this too if she believes in the prophecy as well.

I think the most dangerous people are often those who do what they feel they "must" do, whatever the consequences...

Otter

Would you describe Rhaegar as dangerous? I think he's more grim and determined than dangerous. Sort of like politically savvier and slightly more passionate version of Ned Stark. I think the fact that his best friend was Arthur Dayne -another powerful but principled man - speaks to that.

Alt Shift X

Rhaegar's actions led to a huge war and the destruction of the Targaryen dynasty – I'd say he was a dangerous man indeed
