The video is available only to Patrons for now – we'll hold off on public release until another Westworld S2 trailer comes out.

With Westworld done, we'll now do a quick Robb Stark / Grey Wind video, before moving on to Bloodraven (:

Cheers!

Westworld Season 1 Explained [Patron-only pre-release]

It won’t ever be my favorite show but I definitely enjoyed this video. The banana joke was good. I like that you compared west world to other popular darker shows. You untangled one of the most convoluted shows that seemed to twist for the sake of twisting in the clean organized style everyone appreciates from Alt Shift X! Thank you to the team that makes these videos possible! (I was hoping for a Dark Tower reference with the man in black) On the topic of other shows, have you watched Dark or The End of The F***ing World? I’d love to hear your take on those even if it was just a live stream like you did for Stranger Things.

Paul Barry

Really enjoyed this video - much more than the show. And you nailed why I didn’t enjoy it. It didn’t have any character to like or support. William seemed good, until I worked out he was the MiB, Bernhard until he was a robot, etc. I forced myself to watch the whole season but man it was tough going. Too dark for me. But at least I now feel like a fully understand it - thanks!

Alt Shift X

Yeah I think what's weird about Westworld S1 is that it isn't so much character-driven as it's driven by the mystery of the stuff they don't tell the audience. The drama comes from withheld information, not character. Which is a janky way to tell a story. It'll be fascinating to see what they do with Season 2 - will it be a more conventional story, or will they just try to play more of these mystery/secret games? Thanks Paul!

Alt Shift X

Thanks Stephanie! Yeah The End of the F**king World is fun – it might be cool to do a short video comparing the show to the original comic? Cause there are some pretty dramatic plot differences between the two...

Stephanie M

I like the changes they made. I think they improved the story personally. We were talking about it on the schwiftysquwad page. *spoiler warning* I think getting rid of the cult idea helped keep it more believable (as believable as a story like this can be). It’s almost like a fairy tale, two kids running away, except this dark horrific fairytale. I love the dynamic between the female police. I like that James murdering was a spur of the moment reaction compared to a preplanned action. I love the development we get with James dad. I also like the lady and tiger ending of the show more than the comic.

Kelly Theobald

Wow, amazing job! I struggled with Westworld. I agree with Paul, it was almost a chore to watch it til the end. You did a phenomenal job explaining/exploring it. The transitions were...breathtaking. Seriously, it flowed so beautifully. I also like how with many of your videos, I always feel like I'm on the edge of understanding, like I could get totally lost but never do--you're a good guide. And you're good at challenging your viewer. Really excellent job. :)

Hairless Oyster

You made WestWorld make sense. You should really make the videos for You Tube.

Stephanie M

Shift should ask Schwift to help him figure that YouTube thing out. You think that’s why he had him in the closet?

Rikke Holmberg

But that Schwift guy should talk to Marten about voice modulators, or he's going to ruin his voice on old men and singing crabs. And we can't have him ruining his voice.

Stephanie M

Marten is known for his excellent voice mod knowledge. I can’t believe his poor fans made him buy one. You know what else, speaking of Patchface? I heard some weird squwad was working on a theme song for Patchface.

Rikke Holmberg

A Squwad you say? Tell me more. I'm intrigued.

Rikke Holmberg

Oh WOW! I had high hopes for this video, and again you deliver and then some. How did you even put so much thought and information into 16 minutes and have it be so concise and make perfect sense. You are so amazingly good at what you do. I was one of the people who genuinely enjoyed Westworld. I enjoyed the mystery and the drip-wise reveal of withheld information. I think that way of telling the story fits the theme of robots becoming concious perfectly. It is like we are going through the maze with them. I get your point about the plot not being character-driven, but I for one did actually feel invested in the characters. Especially Maeve and Bernard/Arnold. It certainly is a dark and cynical message that humans are inherently evil, and that as a result any beings we can create will be so as well. But I do think there are glimmers of hope. Arnold was not evil, was he? Or Felix? There might be hope for Maeve as she goes off script to find her daughter? The reanimated Bernard might have some of Arnolds ideas of a better world? I am exited for season two, and I absolutely love what you did with this video. Well done, Shift. Well done indeed.

GemmaG

Im with Rikke, I enjoyed Westworld and revelled in the complexity/confusion (and forgave some weak aspects...it's only S1 after all!). I was one of the nerds on reddit arguing over whether it was 1 timeline or 2. I was really drawn to Maeve, Felix and Bernard. It broke my heart when Bernard couldnt see the damn door 😭. The summary video is superb as always! Thanks for all the hard work put into this video, it really shows (my mind boggles how you can refine everything into 16 mins AND make everything so beautiful).

Shiera Seastar

Westworld was interesting but it became a drag by the end. Exactly for the reasons stated above by everyone, too dark, with unlikeable characters. Convoluted for convolutions (?) sake. It's an HBO wet dream with bewbs and violence, angling for ratings. Not sure if I'll watch Season 2 tbh..

Rikke Holmberg

Yes! I so agree with the beautiful transitions, the feeling of holding your breath to not get lost, and the gentle guiding. Well put into words, Kelly!

Kerri Lewis

I liked how dark and unlikeable everyone was. lol Also-MAN, that soundtrack! So much Radiohead <3

Kelly Theobald

Thank you Rikke ❤️ "breathtaking" is a little dramatic haha, but I felt like it really was!

Rikke Holmberg

Dramatic? Who, us? Not possible. The squwadders have a flawless reputation for being calm and level headed.

Stephanie M

I’m with Shiera on this one. You summed it up lady! Kerri is right about the sound track though.

Hairless Oyster

I think we need a Marten Style reading of that disgusting half dead Lackwit Patchface. I know some talented deviants that could turn some of that shit into gold. Also, bugger Patchface. I hate him like tortoises hate cars.

Bill Miller

Great video! I wasn't even a real fan of WW, but this was an interesting take on it.

Alt Shift X

Thank you for the very kind words, Kelly (:

Thad Gutshall

This is an excellent job of straightening out the maze that was Westworld Season 1. Spot on about the show being mystery-driven, not character. Oh the discussions we would have at work on Mondays after an episode. And Kudos for pronouncing my name perfectly at the end- you might be surprised at how infrequently that happens!

Blackfuse

What do you think of the Samurai World reveal from the end of the season? Did I miss it in the video?
